WWW Wednesday, March 25, 2020

Hey, it’s the middle of the week, and I need to think about something other than work. Time for WWW Wednesday!

This meme was formerly hosted by MizB at A Daily Rhythm and revived on Taking on a World of Words—and shown to me by Aurore-Anne-Chehoke at Diary-of-a-black-city-girl.

The Three Ws are:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

Easy enough, right?

What are you currently reading?

I’m reading Smoke Bitten by Patricia Briggs and am listening to Back to Reality by Mark Stay & Mark Oliver, Kim Bretton (Narrator)—I might finish it today, but am not holding my breath.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished Carrie Vaughn’s The Immortal Conquistador.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be A Bad Day for Sunshine by Darynda Jones (I’ve read very promising things about this one, and am really looking forward to it) and Paradise Valley by C. J. Box, Christina Delaine (Narrator) on audiobook.

Hit me with your Three W’s in the comments! (no, really, do it!)

BOOK SPOTLIGHT: Back to Reality: A Novel (Audiobook) by Mark Stay & Mark Oliver, Kim Bretton

  1. I just finished reading “The Fourth Hand” by John Irving, one of his later novels. It doesn’t have the sweep of “Owen Meany” or “The Cider House Rules”, but it includes some very funny satire on TV news and modern sexual mores, and some very touching insights into the nature of love.

I also just finished my long-time bedside book “The Chinese Have a Word for It”, which cloaks an extensive discussion of how Chinese society evolved within an alphabetic list of common Chinese words and idioms. If you are interested in visiting China, or doing business with Chinese, this is an easy way to learn a lot.

I’m currently reading “The Belton Estate”, a minor Trollope that focuses on the plight of a well-born but un-monied young woman whose only authority over her own future is the right to choose her husband. And if she chooses wrongly, there is no acceptable escape. We have made some progress in a century.

Next I’m going to read “Celtic Myths”, a book I picked up because despite studying W.B.Yeats in college and loving his poetry, I never got the Celtic myth references. Never too late to get educated!

    • I’m going to look for that Irving — and recommend that Chinese book to my niece who just moved back after being there for a few months, and would probably eat it up. Thanks!!

  2. I just finished up Cursor’s Fury (good stuff!), started a Gaunt’s Ghost book and will continue the Gulag Archipelago this weekend…
