My youngest turns 18 today. This is a very strange feeling on multiple layers. It has nothing to do with anything I really talk about here, but it puts me in a strange headspace, y’know? I’m excited for him, nervous about what’s next for the family, and…yeah. I guess I don’t know what I’m saying there. Let’s get back to the books…

I’m headed out of town for a few days tomorrow, which is really going to throw my reading for a loop. Typically when I go somewhere, I find a way to make reading about 50% of what I do. I don’t think I’m going to have that kind of time. But I could be wrong. So planning for March is going to wait until next week. This post is largely a re-run of last week’s, which did make it quicker than usual to put together.

Anyway, on with March’s first WWW Wednesday!

The Three Ws are:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

Easy enough, right?

What are you currently reading?

I’m still reading (and probably finishing today) Troubled Blood by Robert Galbraith and am listening to Percy Jackson’s Greek Heroes by Rick Riordan, Jesse Bernstein (Narrator) on audiobook.

What did you recently finish reading?

The last book I finished was Mark Pepper’s Man Down and Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead by Elle Cosimano, Angela Dawe (Narrator) on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should still be One for All by Lillie Lainoff and I have no idea what my next audiobook will be, we’ll see where I am next week (and what’s available at the library).

Hit me with your Three W’s in the comments! (no, really, do it!)

Hey, H.C., first, happy birthday to your son. Cynthia and I don’t have any children of our own, but we both taught for 31 years, so we do have a passing acquaintance with kids of all ages, which, of course, is nothing even close to being the parent of an 18-year-old. I’m betting your kid’s a good one.

Okay, book stuff. I’m currently reading “Toni Tennille, a Memoir.” So far, interesting read. I just finished “Shattered Dreams, Broken Pieces” by Donna Walton. I read it mostly because a friend of mine dated the author many years ago and is mentioned in the book. It was an okay read, but nothing special. Next up is Robert B. Parker’s “Chance.” Haven’t re-read it for at least ten years, and it takes place in Vegas, which my wife and I visited sixteen years ago for my 60th birthday.

  2. I just finished reading Frank McCourt’s “Angela’s Ashes”, a memoir about growing up poor and Irish with an alcoholic father. I had put off reading this for a long time, being tired of hardship. I was wrong. This book is a knockout – yes there is poverty and hardship, but there is also saving laughter and hope and love. The laughter is the saving grace. I gave this book five stars and told everyone in my family to read it if they hadn’t already.

I also took a stab at Nero Wolfe, who I know is a favorite of yours. I probably shouldn’t have started with #43 in the series; I felt like a guest at a cocktail party where everyone else knew each other; lots of characters who obviously recur and who are greeted affectionately by Wolfe fans, but who left me rather cold. Sorry.

I’m currently trying again with “Corelli’s Mandolin”, a story set mostly on a Greek Island as WWII is breaking out, but with vignettes from various points of view including that of Benito Mussolini’s aide, Greek Prime Minister Metaxas, a homosexual soldier in the Italian army, and others. According to the book’s cover the plot involves a love triangle, but I’ve only met two sides of it yet at page 76; Corelli has not yet appeared.

Lawrence Durrell’s “Justine” is still on my reading stack, but I never seem to want to pick it up.

Next I will probably find a trashy book to read; haven’t decided what, but the Little Free Libraries in my neighborhood are full of candidates.

Never got around to Angela’s Ashes–pretty much for the same reasoning.

I can see The Father Hunt being not the most, um…welcoming introduction to Wolfe/Archie. Sorry it didn’t work for ya.

      • My apprehensions about “Angela’s Ashes” were totally wrong. Read it. Now. There is nothing on your TBR list that you will enjoy/learn from/recommend to others more.

You’ve sold me. I’ve put the hold on it at my library.
