The theme for the week around my home has been tired–my youngest spent a couple of days in the hospital this weekend thanks to a common cold knocking his immuno-suppressed body for a loop. Something nobody tells you about getting a kidney transplant–sure you get a new lease on life, but every now and then some random and relatively wimpy virus can put you down for days. While he’s recovering, we are, too–to a much lesser extent. Still, it’s surprising how much of a toll just sitting in a hospital room for a day can take. Nevertheless, I’ve managed to do a little reading (and less writing, but I’ll catch up sometime…maybe).
Which brings us to today’s WWW Wednesday:

The Three Ws are:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?
Easy enough, right?
What are you currently reading?
I’m reading the atmospheric Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger and am wrapping up the trilogy with The Return of the King by J.R.R. Tolkien, Andy Serkis (Narrator) on audiobook.
What did you recently finish reading?
I finally finished Chas Smith’s Blessed Are the Bank Robbers: The True Adventures of an Evangelical Outlaw (although I did read two other books while working on it). I also just finished Goodbye, Things: The New Japanese Minimalism by Fumio Sasaki, Eriko Sugita (Translator), Keith Szarabajka (Narrator) on audio.
What do you think you’ll read next?
My next book should be “Sixteen Ways to Defend a Walled City by K.J. Parker and I’m not sure what audiobook is next, it’s going to be a while before I get through the one I’m working on.

I’m currently reading and enjoying “The Last Flight” by Julie Clark. In a nod to the start of another baseball season, I just finished re-reading Robert B. Parker’s “Mortal Stakes,” an early Spenser novel. Next up is “30 Before 30” by Marina Shifrin. H.C., I hope your son is doing better.

He’s recovering, thanks, Bob!
Mortal Stakes was my first Spenser–and clearly made me an addict. Good way to kick off the season (even a delayed one)

I’m currently reading “Go Back Where You Came From” by Wajahat Ali, a darkly humorous memoir about the trials of being a brown-skinned American with a non-biblical name. Also “The Binding Chair” by Kathryn Harrison, and Paul Theroux’s sequel to “The great Railway Bazaar”, oddly titled “Ghost Train to the Eastern Star”.
I jusr finished re-reading Evan Connell’s “Mrs. Bridge”, which I read and didn’t get a lot out of in high school, but on re-reading (for a class) it feel as though I have discovered a great novel – not one of these plotty thrillers, but a wonderful building of a character portrait, one small mosaic tile at a time. Also gulped down a confection of a book by Collen McCullough, “The Ladies of Missalonghi” in which the meek and downtrodden do inherit the earth, with the aid of a …. but I don’t want to give away the twist at the end.
Next I AM GOING TO FINISH “Corelli’s Mandolin.”

I’d never read Ali or (knowingly) seen him on TV until that book–I thought it was pretty effective, and not really what I expected.

I don’t remember your reviewing Ali’s book…

I can barely keep track of them myself 🙂 https://irresponsiblereader.com/2022/02/08/go-back-to-where-you-came-from-by-wajahat-ali-an-all-american-story/
