The Three Ws are:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

Seems easy enough, right? Let’s take a peek at this week’s answers:

What are you currently reading?

I’m reading The Book of Perilous Dishes by Doina Rusti, translated by James Christian Brown, and am listening to Labyrinth by Kat Richardson, read by Mia Barron on audiobook.

What did you recently finish reading?

Yesterday I finished Wesley Parker’s Detours and Do-overs and Robert Germaux’s Grammar Sex and Other Stuff: A Collection of (mostly humorous) Essays. I most recently finished The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi, read by Wil Wheaton on audiobook, and at least temporarily set aside One in the Chamber by Robin Peguero, read by Zion Jang because it just wasn’t working for me (but I can see why it would for many people).

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be the ARC of Shades of Mercy by Bruce Borgos—I think this series has legs, and I’m eager to be proven correct. My next audiobook should be A Door in the Dark by Scott Reintgen, read by Jesse Vilinsky, assuming the friend who is currently listening to our library’s copy (and recommended it to me) finishes before I finish Labryinth.

Tell me what you’ve been reading lately—or what neat thing is coming up on your TBR.

  1. I’m currently reading “The Marriage Portrait” by Maggie O’Farrell, another expansion of Robert Browning’s “My Last Duchess”. This one is much more “literary” than the frankly romantic take I recently read by Gabrielle Kimm, meaning that it jumps back and forth in time and in point of view, and has a fair amount of voluptuous description, creative metaphor, etc. Yes, but the STORY?

I have dipped into “Sociopath: A Memoir” by Patric Gagne, and will read it slowly, as I am hoping to get a better understanding of some of the mental illness in my step-family. I have begun “The Last Outlaws” by Thom Hatch as bedside reading, as I have tired of Sir Max “Mallowan’s Memoirs” of his archeological achievements (although it is a good sleep-inducer).

I just finished Groff Conklin’s selection of “6 Great Short Novels of Science Fiction.” Well, they may have been great in 1954 when this yellowed paperback was published, but the first four are sadly dated. The collection is redeemed by James Blish, imagining a world where the descendants of human settlers are now microscopic water organisms, and Theodore Sturgeon, defying the 50’s sci fi convention of seeing women only as sex toys, or victims to be rescued.

Next I may try Ruth Ozecki’s latest again, or reread a Tony Hillerman that coincidentally was selected by my book club for discussion.
