One of These Things is Not Like the Other…

I frequently find myself surprised at the strength of some of my opinions when it comes to the Fox and O’Hare series, starting with one of the prequel short stories—Pros and Cons and going up through 2019’s The Big Kahuna (Book 7). At its best, the series is a great combination of action, comedy, with a dash of will-they-won’t-they flirtatious fun.

As I’ve been reading the latest installment, The Bounty, one thought in the back of my mind is: this doesn’t look like a Fox and O’Hare book. And, like with some of the books, I find myself thinking about this more than than I’d expect to.

It just doesn’t look right, does it? The other covers (to me) capture the flavor of the books, the bright colors and the silhouettes speak to me of action-comedy. The Bounty looks like a cable/streaming drama. Like, a merger of CB Strike or Jack Ryan thumbnails.

Does it matter that much? That’s a good question—but I’m not sure if I was trying the series with The Bounty that I’d be getting what I expected.

Sure, it might just be a change, and like Garth Algar, I’m not a fan of change. But it’s a branding thing, and why mess with one that’s working?

WWW Wednesday, July 22, 2020

What, already? Another Wednesday? July is speeding by. Guess it’s time for WWW Wednesday.

The Three Ws are:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

Easy enough, right?
What are you currently reading?
I’m reading Venators: Legends Rise by Devri Walls and am listening to The Monster in the Hollows by Andrew Peterson (narrated by the author).

What did you recently finish reading?
I just finished Wesley Parker’s Coffee and Condolences and Land of Wolves by Craig Johnson, George Guidall (Narrator) on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?
My next book should be The Revelators by Ace Atkins (assuming it’s available at my Library in time), or it’ll be Betty by Tiffany McDaniel and Dark Jones by Alex Bledsoe, Stefan Rudnicki (Narrator) on audiobook.

WWW Wednesday, July 15, 2020

So Monday night, my Internet service goes down—and stays down for 16 hours. It’s times like this that remind me how dependent I am on the silly thing. Can’t post anything, can’t keep on on my bloghopping/social media, or any of the handful of other things I needed to do. And then, of course, I’m still telecommuting—so missing out on over half my workday on Tuesday was icing on a really nasty cake*. Before I realize what’s happening, it’s time for WWW Wednesday! I need these questions just to help me get my head on straight.

* The cream filling was that I caught up on my reading after a slow week last week, 1.7 books in that 16 hours.

Coming Attractions

I don’t have any books to post about today — as of this writing, I’ve got about 20 minutes of reading left in one book, am waiting on something from an author on another, and am in the middle of 2 short story collections, so I’m stuck for material for posts. But not for long! While I have a much longer TBR list — and another dozen or so books that I actually own, but haven’t gotten to — her’s what I’m calling my “Active TBR List” — those books that I intend on knocking out in the next month. I’ll probably get one or two others in, and not get to all of these right away, but this is my hope/plan. I’m curious — how far out do you guys plan? What’s on your list?

and I’ve got these waiting in paperback or on my Kindle and I’m getting impatient with other things getting in my way:

  • The Song of The Swan by Michael RN Jones
  • Bannerless by Carrie Vaughn
  • Rubicon by Ian Patrick

I’m not sure I should’ve listed it like this — it’s both exciting and overwhelming.
