Cover for Dyer Street Punk Witches by Phil Williams

Dyer Street Punk Witches by Phil Williams

Check out Dyer Street Punk Witches by Phil Williams. Take a look at that cover. Does it warm your aging punk heart? Then this one’s for you! Kit Fadulous is decades past her punk witch days, but she’s still true to the punk life. Each chapter begins with a few pages set in the ‘90s before bumping up to the present. The setting is a gritty part of an English city overrun by gangs. Urban fantasy thriller. No romance!

Phil has a punk rock playlist for that book.

Sort of…this technically doesn’t fit the mold for this series, but Bob’s always so generous with his time, I’m going to ignore the infraction. 🙂 Also, as a Jeremy Barnes reader, I want to try to gin up some interest in this.

An Elevator Pitch for Something You Love
Okay, if you’re reading this, that means HC decided to include me in this year’s celebration of self-published authors, and for that, I thank him, because as I told him, I absolutely would have understood not being included. Why? Because I don’t have any self-published works to recommend (not recent ones, anyway), which is, well, really embarrassing for this self-published author. What I realized was that for several months now, I’ve been reading works by established authors who have traditional publishers. For instance, some time ago, I came across an early Myron Bolitar book that I had somehow missed. I immediately downloaded the book and read it, which led me to going back and rereading some of the other books in the series, which led me to reading some of Harlan Coben’s standalones. Along with all of that, I read and greatly enjoyed Christa Comes Out of Her Shell (thanks for the recommendation, HC!), which led me to reading some of Abbi Waxman’s other books, especially Adult Assembly Required, which I’ll be finishing over the next few days. And then, I promise to go the self-published route for a good stretch. I mean, it’s not as though I don’t have easy access to a treasure trove of information about great books by indie writers right here on the Irresponsible Reader’s blog.

My Elevator Pitch by Robert Germaux
Cover to be Revealed
I’m currently working on my sixth, and so far untitled, Jeremy Barnes mystery. On the day before he’s due to depart on a trip to Hawaii, JB meets with Owen Collier, a dapper guy in his fifties, who tells JB he’s being blackmailed. He won’t tell JB why he’s being blackmailed, just that “no one was hurt, not really” and that it involves something he did when he was much younger, something that would be personally embarrassing if it was made public. He tells JB he’s willing to pay the blackmailer and wants JB to handle that process. JB refuses, saying the blackmailer will just keep coming back for more, that Collier will become the blackmailer’s personal ATM. He advises Collier to contact the police. Collier thanks JB and says he’ll consider his advice. Two weeks later, JB returns from Hawaii and learns that Evan Collier’s situation has taken a sudden and deadly turn. Collier’s widow contacts JB to ask him to find out why her husband was being blackmailed and who killed him. As JB gets further and further into Evan Collier’s life, he realizes there was much more going on than a simple blackmail scheme. His investigation takes him back to Collier’s college days and a group that called themselves the Sterling Six, a group that JB suspects is hip-deep in whatever happened all those years ago. But none of the Six appears willing to cooperate with JB’s investigation, leaving him no choice but to begin looking into their lives, a decision that ultimately leads to dangerous confrontations and a twist that he never expected.

About this Author
Hi everyone. I’m Bob Germaux, former high school English teacher, current indie writer, and long-time lover of all things book-related and Pittsburgh Pirates-related. (In 1960, as a fourteen-year-old, I was at Forbes Field with my dad when Maz hit the home run heard ‘round the world. Yeah, I’m old. Do the math.) Over the past ten years, I’ve published thirteen books, a rather eclectic group that includes seven mysteries, four collections of houmorous essays (my Grammar Sex Collection), one modern romance (The Backup Husband) and my favorite, Love Stories, a semi-biographical novel based on my wife’s experiences during the six weeks she spent in Europe when she was seventeen. I don’t have a website, which might explain why I haven’t gotten rich yet, or maybe I’m just not a good writer. Okay, it’s gotta be the website thing. At any rate, you can check out my books at my Amazon Author Page, and even download free samples. If you decide to buy a book or two (or thirteen), they’re ridiculously cheap. (Maybe that’s why I’m not rich yet.)

Cover for The Genesis of Change by Livia J. Elliot

The Genesis of Change by Livia J. Elliot

I’d like to shine a light on Livia J. Elliot’s novella: The Genesis of Change; a breathtaking work that paints its setting in your mind with permanent ink. Elliot’s intellect is awe inspiring and her writing here is a force to be reckoned with. I’m blown away by her ability to weave abstract concepts into vivid mental imagery. The resulting atmosphere of the world she’s created feels fresh and energizing. It’s an experience—and not one to be missed.

My Elevator Pitch by Karl Forshaw

Cover for Renia by Karl Forshaw
Renia is a book about a missing book. It takes place in an academic stronghold, in a world where the moon fell from the sky and caused somewhat of a mess. Under the surface, it’s a multi-pov story that explores themes of guilt, and shame. It’s a book about living with consequences, and overcoming the choke-hold they can have on you.

An Elevator Pitch for Something You Love
Cover for Black Market Heart by Darby Harn

Black Market Heart by Darby Harn

My favorite indie read of 2024 (so far) was Black Market Heart by Darby Harn. It’s book 4 in his Eververse series, but can certainly be read as a standalone. (I haven’t read the previous books yet and had no trouble following this one.) It’s a cross between urban fantasy and science fiction, with a focus on superheroes—or villains, as the case may be. The main character of Black Market Heart could be construed as either, depending on your perspective. I love complicated, morally gray characters, and this one was done really well. Definitely worth the read!

My Elevator Pitch by A.J. Calvin

Cover of Harbinger by A.J. Calvin
My latest release was Harbinger, book 3 in The Caein Legacy (released May 28, 2024). This is a quick synopsis of the series as a whole:

Andrew and Alexander both harbor secrets that, if exposed, would land them in line for the headsman’s axe. The kingdom’s laws regarding both magi and dragon-kind have rarely been enforced, but when the new king ascends the throne, the lax policy quickly begins to change. The king is uncompromising in the enforcement of the laws, even when those affected are blood relatives—his brother, Alexander, and his half-brother, Andrew.

When Alexander’s secret is revealed, Andrew must find a means to save him. The only option he is left with is making his own secret—that he is half-dragon—known to the world. When the kingdom learns the truth of their origins, the brothers are forced to flee. Their exile sparks a war, as others like them begin to fight for their right to exist.

The Caein Legacy begins with with Exile.

Eyes of Empire: Hybrid Helix Turn Five

The Empire is cruel, sadistic, and random, ordering genocides on dozens of worlds while ruling the rest with a tyrannical fist.

Thinking it can’t be stopped, Rohan abandoned it to live a peaceful life on Wistful.

What will it take for him to face the Empire again?

And if he does, what will it cost?

An Elevator Pitch for Something You Love
Cover for Owl Eyes Motel

Owl Eyes Motel by Barbara Avon

Owl Eyes Motel is a gripping, haunting read that will stay with you long after you finish it. Each chapter tells the story of a different guest who checks into the motel, but as the book unfolds, it becomes clear that there is a common thread running through their experiences. The Owl Eyes Motel is more than just a place to stay; it’s a purgatory of sorts, where the guests are trapped by their own dark secrets, as well as the motel’s murky past.

My Elevator Pitch by Anca Antoci
Cover of Pierced by Silver
When a vengeful blood-sucking creature stalks a Transylvanian village, leaving a trail of gruesome murders, Ella, Felix and Radu join forces again, and must face their own darkness to stop the carnage before Transylvania drowns in blood.

Based on Romanian folklore and mythology, the story follows the events of Midsummer Night’s Curse, but can also be read as a standalone. Each book in this series features a new mystery that will be solved by the end of the story, but the dynamics between the characters may change and evolve, so I recommend that you read the books in order.

This is a good fit for readers who love cozy gothic vibes, mystery, folklore, ancient secrets, morally gray characters, a detective with a haunted past, found family and a slow-burn romance.

Spreading the Self-Pub Love This Week

Once again, it’s Self-Published Author Appreciation Week. This year, I’m all about spreading the love for self-published works…
Spreading the Self-Pub Love
This is our annual tribute to those authors who take it all on themselves–all the work, all the risks, all the costs, and all the (too small) rewards. After doing all the work of writing a book, you’ve got to pay for an editor (if not editors–line and copy editor), maybe a proofreader, a cover artist, maybe a cover designer, and who knows what other services you may choose to pay. Then you have to market the book–maybe get a Book Tour organized, find bloggers, reviewers, BookTubers, and others to spread the word–and all other sorts of things. Really there’s more than I can mention here, but you can find some authors talking about it in the series of Q&As I did last year with Self-Published authors called The Inside Scoop.

Really, every week on this blog is Author Appreciation Week, but you can see why we’re eager to take one week to focus on the Self-Pub warriors among them, right?

How am I going to show my appreciation/love this year? Well, hopefully, I’ll be able to find the time to write posts about some recent self-published reads of mine and some great lists of Self-Published books I’ve read already for you to check out.

But the big focus this year is on Spreading the Self-Pub Love (see the title of this post). The Number One thing that Self-Published Authors need are readers to appreciate them–and who better to recommend some than other self-published authors? So I’ve asked some to drop by and recommend a self-published book that deserves more eyeballs. (you’ll note that some of these authors couldn’t/wouldn’t limit themselves to one…such mavericks).

The featured posts this week will come from some names familiar to readers of this blog, and a good number of new names (hopefully they’ll pop up enough to be familiar to you soon):

Anca Antoci
JCM Berne
Tom Bookbeard
A.J. Calvin
Andi Ewington
Karl Forshaw
Shannon Knight
David T List
Rebecca Carey Lyles
H.C. Newell
Nathan Ogloff
Paul Regnier
DB Rook
Marie Sinadjan
D.H. Willison
Tao Wong

Stick around and see what they recommend, and have to offer themselves!
