My Elevator Pitch by Paul Regnier

Cover of Bard Tidings by Paul Regnier
The spirit of a warrior lies deep inside a bard. Deep down. Way, way down.

Jonas wakes up each day regretting his position as the king’s bard. He dreams of escaping the kingdom and returning to life as a traveling musician with his best friend Elrick. But when his love Bree is taken prisoner in the castle, he and Elrick must act. Their attempts at rescue go horribly wrong, and the king marks them for death. Now they must flee the kingdom with a hefty reward on their heads.

Meanwhile, the king’s soldiers march to war, placing Bree’s hometown in their path of destruction. Jonas must go from lute player to monster slayer as they travel through dangerous lands on a desperate quest to stop an army.

Their adventures throw them in league with fearsome lycans, stabby assassins, and a cursed warrior. With their help they must survive a pursuing dragon, slay a sorcerer, defeat an army, and of course, compose the perfect song along the way.

Can Jonas and his friends survive the journey and save an innocent town before it’s too late?

With all the Dune hype, I’d like to expose people to Dan Simmons’ Hyperion series. It’s only 4 books, and some short stories, but it’s not as dry as Dune and in my opinion, it’s better.

My Elevator Pitch by Nathan Ogloff
Cover of The Sapien Empire by Nathan Ogloff
The Sapien Empire is a post-apocalyptic epic where civilization is making a comeback.

About this Author
Nathan was born in New Westminster, British Columbia and has had a fascination with story ever since he wrote a couple of pages to a time-travel book when he was in third-grade.

He believes we live in an interesting time that seems to be on the knife’s edge between a spectacular future or an abysmal landscape of decay. Through his stories that force us to take a deeper look at ourselves, he aims to foster a world of mutual understanding.

Although not the most qualified guy to fix the world’s problems, his writing just might give those-that-are an idea of how to do it. When he’s not writing, Nathan spends his time adding to his ever increasing heavy-metal Spotify playlist and creating spaceships in Lego Studio.

Lost in the elven forests of Nyn’Dira, Nerana must find her way to those she’s lost. Regarded as a catalyst of the impending war, she is quickly sought after by the natives, who are as eager for her blood as the Order of Saro.

Struggling to survive in a land forbidden to humans, Nerana soon learns the mother of all Trees, Galdir, is dying, leaving the world to face an encroaching darkness. The only hope of its survival rests in the hands of Drimil’Rothar, but as the madness grows, her energy weakens, and soon, the Light holding all in balance will fade.

Cast into a war as the humans invade elvish borders, Nerana is faced with an impossible task, one that will decide the fate of the world. But while the madness diminishes Aélla’s strength, Nerana finds herself growing stronger, and her only chance lies in overcoming the darkness gripping her soul, or giving in to the power the world seeks to destroy.

Sort of…this technically doesn’t fit the mold for this series, but Bob’s always so generous with his time, I’m going to ignore the infraction. 🙂 Also, as a Jeremy Barnes reader, I want to try to gin up some interest in this.

An Elevator Pitch for Something You Love
Okay, if you’re reading this, that means HC decided to include me in this year’s celebration of self-published authors, and for that, I thank him, because as I told him, I absolutely would have understood not being included. Why? Because I don’t have any self-published works to recommend (not recent ones, anyway), which is, well, really embarrassing for this self-published author. What I realized was that for several months now, I’ve been reading works by established authors who have traditional publishers. For instance, some time ago, I came across an early Myron Bolitar book that I had somehow missed. I immediately downloaded the book and read it, which led me to going back and rereading some of the other books in the series, which led me to reading some of Harlan Coben’s standalones. Along with all of that, I read and greatly enjoyed Christa Comes Out of Her Shell (thanks for the recommendation, HC!), which led me to reading some of Abbi Waxman’s other books, especially Adult Assembly Required, which I’ll be finishing over the next few days. And then, I promise to go the self-published route for a good stretch. I mean, it’s not as though I don’t have easy access to a treasure trove of information about great books by indie writers right here on the Irresponsible Reader’s blog.

My Elevator Pitch by Robert Germaux
Cover to be Revealed
I’m currently working on my sixth, and so far untitled, Jeremy Barnes mystery. On the day before he’s due to depart on a trip to Hawaii, JB meets with Owen Collier, a dapper guy in his fifties, who tells JB he’s being blackmailed. He won’t tell JB why he’s being blackmailed, just that “no one was hurt, not really” and that it involves something he did when he was much younger, something that would be personally embarrassing if it was made public. He tells JB he’s willing to pay the blackmailer and wants JB to handle that process. JB refuses, saying the blackmailer will just keep coming back for more, that Collier will become the blackmailer’s personal ATM. He advises Collier to contact the police. Collier thanks JB and says he’ll consider his advice. Two weeks later, JB returns from Hawaii and learns that Evan Collier’s situation has taken a sudden and deadly turn. Collier’s widow contacts JB to ask him to find out why her husband was being blackmailed and who killed him. As JB gets further and further into Evan Collier’s life, he realizes there was much more going on than a simple blackmail scheme. His investigation takes him back to Collier’s college days and a group that called themselves the Sterling Six, a group that JB suspects is hip-deep in whatever happened all those years ago. But none of the Six appears willing to cooperate with JB’s investigation, leaving him no choice but to begin looking into their lives, a decision that ultimately leads to dangerous confrontations and a twist that he never expected.

About this Author
Hi everyone. I’m Bob Germaux, former high school English teacher, current indie writer, and long-time lover of all things book-related and Pittsburgh Pirates-related. (In 1960, as a fourteen-year-old, I was at Forbes Field with my dad when Maz hit the home run heard ‘round the world. Yeah, I’m old. Do the math.) Over the past ten years, I’ve published thirteen books, a rather eclectic group that includes seven mysteries, four collections of houmorous essays (my Grammar Sex Collection), one modern romance (The Backup Husband) and my favorite, Love Stories, a semi-biographical novel based on my wife’s experiences during the six weeks she spent in Europe when she was seventeen. I don’t have a website, which might explain why I haven’t gotten rich yet, or maybe I’m just not a good writer. Okay, it’s gotta be the website thing. At any rate, you can check out my books at my Amazon Author Page, and even download free samples. If you decide to buy a book or two (or thirteen), they’re ridiculously cheap. (Maybe that’s why I’m not rich yet.)

The Genesis of Change by Livia J. Elliot

I’d like to shine a light on Livia J. Elliot’s novella: The Genesis of Change; a breathtaking work that paints its setting in your mind with permanent ink. Elliot’s intellect is awe inspiring and her writing here is a force to be reckoned with. I’m blown away by her ability to weave abstract concepts into vivid mental imagery. The resulting atmosphere of the world she’s created feels fresh and energizing. It’s an experience—and not one to be missed.

My Elevator Pitch by Karl Forshaw

Cover for Renia by Karl Forshaw
Renia is a book about a missing book. It takes place in an academic stronghold, in a world where the moon fell from the sky and caused somewhat of a mess. Under the surface, it’s a multi-pov story that explores themes of guilt, and shame. It’s a book about living with consequences, and overcoming the choke-hold they can have on you.

An Elevator Pitch for Something You Love
Cover for Black Market Heart by Darby Harn

Black Market Heart by Darby Harn

My favorite indie read of 2024 (so far) was Black Market Heart by Darby Harn. It’s book 4 in his Eververse series, but can certainly be read as a standalone. (I haven’t read the previous books yet and had no trouble following this one.) It’s a cross between urban fantasy and science fiction, with a focus on superheroes—or villains, as the case may be. The main character of Black Market Heart could be construed as either, depending on your perspective. I love complicated, morally gray characters, and this one was done really well. Definitely worth the read!

My Elevator Pitch by A.J. Calvin

Cover of Harbinger by A.J. Calvin
My latest release was Harbinger, book 3 in The Caein Legacy (released May 28, 2024). This is a quick synopsis of the series as a whole:

Andrew and Alexander both harbor secrets that, if exposed, would land them in line for the headsman’s axe. The kingdom’s laws regarding both magi and dragon-kind have rarely been enforced, but when the new king ascends the throne, the lax policy quickly begins to change. The king is uncompromising in the enforcement of the laws, even when those affected are blood relatives—his brother, Alexander, and his half-brother, Andrew.

When Alexander’s secret is revealed, Andrew must find a means to save him. The only option he is left with is making his own secret—that he is half-dragon—known to the world. When the kingdom learns the truth of their origins, the brothers are forced to flee. Their exile sparks a war, as others like them begin to fight for their right to exist.

The Caein Legacy begins with with Exile.

About this Author
A.J. Calvin is a science fiction/fantasy novelist from Loveland, Colorado known best for The Caein Legacy series and The Relics of War series. By day, she works as a microbiologist, but in her free time she writes. She lives with her husband, a turtle, and a salt water aquarium.
