What’s The Fundamentals of Sacred Theology About?

The original (Latin) title of this is Aphorisms which Comprehend the Fundamentals of Sound Theology—and that’s a decent summary of this work. In 1,000 points—mostly a sentence or two, a few are a good-sized paragraph—Vitringa lays out a fairly comprehensive outline of Systematic Theology. For his students, this is basically a course outline for them to fill out by their own research and showing up for class.

In his Prologue, he says:

What use do you say that this little book is for us? For this, listeners, first, that you may have a certain order by which I discuss the matters of theology, and second, that I may explain the collected fundamentals of these things clearly and truthfully. Thus, in this brief space of time, you would be able to repeat this sum of all truths as handed down to me and memorize them.

Interestingly (for his contemporary readers as well as his 21st Century readers):

I did not wish to add Scripture references so that I would compel and persuade you against your will to consult other authors. For I know that no one is frightened by excessive brevity.

* I love this sentence and sentiment. I can’t help but notice a lot of Reformation and post-Reformation writers say something along these lines. Vitringa is the only one I recall seeing living by it, however. I doff my cap to him.

Here’s a summary of the work as a whole from the man himself:

First, I have set forth very brief theses which lack necessary explanation. Second, I have refrained from adding Scripture references which ought to be employed for confirming them. There were friends whose judgment I greatly trust who dissuaded me from both of these points. But I have most serious reasons why I did not comply with them. For if these theses were greatly lengthened, this book would grow into a system. But I determined in my soul that I would never write a full dogmatic work, since certain ones have been published by most learned men in this day and age which are quite to my taste.

Now, I’ve had some pretty thorough and useful syllabi in my academic life, but to be given a document that’s essentially: Here’s everything you need to know, go fill in the details. I love this idea—and I think that this is a dream come true for theology students, grab this and fill it out.

So, what did I think about The Fundamentals of Sacred Theology?

I was a little annoyed when I saw Keith Mathison write:

Imagine if someone summarized the substance of Reformed doctrine in 1000 tweets. Vitringa already did it.

Because I was pretty much going to say that myself. True, it’s hard not to say something like that about this book in this day and age, but, still.

The aphorisms, fundamentals, or tweets that are the very format of this book are also its weakness. There are so many times that I wanted a little more detail, a little more explanation, that I just wasn’t going to get. Generally, it was to make sure I understood what he was getting at—I was pretty sure, but another sentence or two would’ve helped. On a few points I really didn’t understand what he was getting at or where he was coming from (usually, I was intrigued by the notion, but I needed more).

But by and large, these brief points are a great way to do a quick study, refresher, or introduction of a topic in systematic theology. And you can use the points as the basis for your own outline to fill in the details with your own study (just like Vitringa intended).

Is it the greatest thing I’ve read when it comes to systematics? Nope. But it’s possibly the quickest, (deceptively) easiest systematic read I’ve come across. It’s a useful and generally helpful read and something I can see myself returning to often. Give it a shot.

Word and Spirit: Selected Writings in Biblical and Systematic Theology by Richard B. Gaffin, Jr.:Righteous Gems

I can’t put this one off any longer—if I could, I promise you I would (I’ve delayed it a few weeks already). I’m out of my league here, but I’ve got nothing else to write about. And I really need to write something about this.

The word atonement does not occur in Paul’s writings.’ But no concern is more central for him than the meaning of the death of Christ, the church’s perennial concern in its doctrine of the atonement. What does Christ’s death achieve? How is it effective for the salvation of sinners? This chapter considers Paul’s answers to such questions with an eye to the issue of continuity between Paul’s teaching and later church doctrine. How faithful to the apostle is subsequent Christian understanding of the atonement?

Contemporary Pauline scholarship is marked by a fairly widespread consensus that in its dominant and most influential expressions, traditional atonement theology departs from Paul in at least two substantial ways. First, it fails to recognize, or at least do justice to, the Christus Victor theme in Paul, that Christ’s death destroys actual slavery to sin and its consequences in the sinner. Second, its notion of the cross as penal substitution, particularly as it has been developed beginning with the Reformation, is foreign to Paul.? In my view, the first of these critiques contains some measure of truth; however, the second is wrong. As a fair generalization, historic Christianity, including Protestant orthodoxy, is weak in not recognizing adequately Paul’s teaching that the cross destroys sin in the sinner as a corrupting and enslaving power, but modern historical-critical scholarship is defective for not dealing adequately with his teaching that the cross removes the guilt and just punishment of sin.

What’s Word and Spirit About?

According to the Publisher,

Few Reformed theologians have exerted the influence in both the church and the academy that Richard B. Gaffin, Jr. has, shaping the theology and spiritual formation of generations of pastors and teachers. Until now, his most significant published works have been inaccessible to most theological readers, published in academic journals, denominational newsletters, and out of print festschrifts and essay collections. A decade in the making, Word & Spirit gathers Gaffin’s finest works of biblical and systematic theology and arranges them in a singular, organic whole that presents Gaffin’s thought and work as comprehensively and clearly as it ever has been. More than 40 essays, articles, and tracts have been compiled, including “The Usefulness of the Cross”, No Adam, No Gospel, “A Cessationist View,” and “The Work of Christ Applied”. This collection is a must-have for any student of theology.

There’s really not much else to say. It’s broken down into five sections, and I’d be tempted to say that each section was the most valuable/useful (well, at least 2-5, but maybe if I spent some time re-reading part 1, I’d reconsider that). Let’s take a quick look at each:

Hermeneutics, Biblical Theology, and Systematic Theology

This is ten articles spread out over 170+ pages, covering the basics of Biblical Theology, how it can and should interact with Systematic Theology (and vice versa).

There’s some repetition of ideas (this will be a common thread throughout each section), which makes sense as these were written as individual pieces, not as part of a book, and Gaffin’s position and ideas about these things have remained static/build on each other.

It’s vital to understand him and his work—and just good to have a handle on these ideas regardless.

Theology of Hebrews and Paul

Most of these seven articles encapsulate (and expand on) the ideas from In the Fullness of Time: An Introduction to the Biblical Theology of Acts and Paul, a book I raved about a couple of years ago. But there are teachings and texts he didn’t address there, that he does here.

This section was so rich, so helpful—the chapters “‘The Obedience of Faith’: Some Reflections on the Rationale for Romans,” “Atonement in the Pauline Corpus: ‘The Scandal of the Cross,'” “and “The Priesthood of Christ: A Servant in the Sanctuary”—were good enough that I almost re-read them immediately (and I probably should’ve).

Scripture, Epistemology, and Anthropology

The first three of these six chapters might have been the most mind-stretching for me (they won’t be for everyone), and were very rewarding.

The final three were the easiest for me—and the most repetitive in the book. They focus on Biblical anthropology (as in teaching on the nature of man), focusing on the historicity and nature of Adam. I’ve read at least “No Adam, No Gospel” before—it was published as a booklet a few years ago, and I think I read the previous chapter, the Translator’s Foreword to Adam in the New Testament as well. And I didn’t mind one bit re-reading it/them. Still helpful.

Pneumatology

These seven chapters could be (should be, if you ask me) be reworked into one book. Gaffin shines in these studies—and going back to his By Faith, Not By Sight and Resurrection and Redemption, these teachings are where he’s historically helped me the most. And that streak continues here.

Reformed theologians often (and wrongly) get the reputation for not talking about the Spirit as much as other traditions, and—even worse—are considered to ignore Him. Gaffin makes it clear that everything about Reformed Theology is based on the work of the Spirit in believers’ lives and helps us understand just what that means—both theologically and practically.

The Law of God, Soteriology, and Eschatology

This section pretty much covers “everything that couldn’t fit above.” Again, I’ve read a few of these before in other publications/stand-alone works. But I don’t care.

The chapters on eschatology are gold.

The chapters on Justification and Calvin are even better—the way he talks about Calvin’s view of the relationship of Sanctification and Justification (and the way he presents the two in The Instittues even in the organization of them) is so important for us all to heed. Particularly as he roots them both in Union in Christ—as is every benefit that the believer enjoys in this life and in the resurrection.

So, what did I think about Word and Spirit?

The justification of God’s elect is unshakably secure because, in a sentence, Jesus Christ is “the same yesterday, today and forever” (Heb. 13:8). Despite the way it is often read, this is not, at least in the first place, a proof text for Christ’s divine immutability, that as God he is unchanging, though that attribute is surely in the background (see, for instance, 1:10—12).” Rather, it is most likely an affirmation of his unwavering fidelity, his abiding reliability as high priest—in his once-for-all sacrifice in the past on earth and in his ongoing present and future (cf. 7:25) intercession in heaven. That is as good a note as any to bring these reflections to a close. “Jesus Christ—the same yesterday, today and forever.” This, first and finally, is what Christians need to know about their justification when they consider Christ as their priest, not only in his state of humiliation but also in his state of exaltation.

Outside of the Foreword, Introduction, and Brief Biography (Appendix A), none of this is particularly easy reading. Nor quick. But all of it is accessible—for the depth he gets into at points, this is much more approachable than On Classical Trinitarianism (to mention a recent example).

This is probably the most personally beneficial read I’ve had in the last couple of years—sitting down with Gaffin for 30-50 minutes every week has been a great discipline and a great boon.

I should probably have more to say than that, but I can’t think of what else to say that’s not just a restatement of this: this is a fantastic book—with insights, teachings, and reminders of the things that are vital for every believer.

What’s Guidebook for Instruction in the Christian Religion About?

…in writing this guidebook, I had in mind the pupils in the highest classes of our Christian gymnasium, public schools, in the education of teachers, and in normal schools, etc., and moreover those who desire to understand the main content of our Christian, Reformed confession of faith through a not too comprehensive or expensive book.

That’s it in a nutshell—this book delivers the main content of the Reformed Christian thought directed toward those in High School or those without much education.

In twenty chapters of 10 +/- pages each, Bavinck covers things such as the Knowledge of God, General and Special Revelation, the Trinity, Creation, Providence, The Person and Work of Christ, The Holy Spirit, Salvation, The Church, and The End of the World.

There’s not much more to say than that, it’s shorter and easier to read than Systematic/Dogmatic Theology that I can think of, written by one of the most significant and influential teachers of the Twentieth Century.

[His desire is] to discuss the material in a scriptural sense: that it is not only revealed in its teaching but also in its comforting character, and that it is applied to the heart and conscience. Religious instruction must be education in the true sense of the word, and it must be education in the religion—that is, in the most tender and sacred of what a human soul may possess.

Guidebook and The Wonderful Works of God

While this was an original composition, it is fairly similar to The Wonderful Works of God, published a few years earlier. The Guidebook is streamlined, no doubt, but many passages/paragraphs in both match*, and the translators give footnotes throughout showing that—and when they diverge. There are instances that I’ve found (and will likely see others in future reading/study) that a similar section in the Guidebook helps clarify a point in TWWoG.

* Bavinck says he “intimately connected” the two.

So, what did I think about Guidebook for Instruction in the Christian Religion?

It took three afternoons of semi-casual reading for me to read this—I could’ve done it in two, had I skipped an afternoon nap (much less the three I let myself take over the period). I spent months reading both The Wonderful Works of God and Reformed Dogmatics, I practically gave myself whiplash as quick as this went.

This is incredibly accessible—anyone from fourteen on up should be able to handle it (although parts might take a little work for some—but not often). It covers all the essential matters of Systematic Theology, and occasionally goes beyond. There might be things you’d like him to be a bit more thorough about, but that’s what the other works are for. The translators put it this way:

He traverses a path in which he attempts to bridge the gap between the theology in the academy and theology in the church In doing so, he provides the pilgrim with a theology that is uniquely accessible. For those who found his Reformed Dogmatics alarmingly academic and his Magnalia Dei* intimidatingly thick, Guidebook is the theological porridge that is “just right” for most readers.

* The translators use the Latin title for The Wonderful Works of God throughout the work.

I recommend this without hesitation—as I do everything I’ve read by Bavinck—but without having to worry that someone will be intimidated by it, or decide they’re not up for the work. Although I still maintain that people shouldn’t be as intimidated as they are by him. The translators have given us a gift in making this available to English readers for the first time—as much of a gift as Bavinck gave the church of his time in writing it.

The translators close their Introduction with these words, and I think they’re a great way to sum up the book:

In his Guidebook for Instruction in the Christian Religion, Bavinck has given a gift to the church. The reader will likely find little that is groundbreaking or novel (as one regularly does in Reformed Dogmatics). However, this book supplies the theology of an academic concerned with the life of the church. It is an example of catechetical theology produced by one of the foremost academic theologians of his time.

Above all, we hope this translation helps fulfill Bavinck’s hope for true theology: that it does not remain an object of the head but penetrates the heart and thus becomes an act of confession and praise. As he writes, “Dogmatics, therefore, is… a hymn of adoration and thanksgiving, a ‘glory to God in the highest’ (Luke 2:14). In this book, Bavinck gives us a songbook: setting God before us and calling us to sing God’s praises.
