I’m reading The Worst We Can Find: MST3K, RiffTrax, and the History of Heckling at the Movies by Dale Sherman and fighting the urge to do nothing but watch MST3K for the next week. And I just started the three-week voyage* that will be listening to Dark Age by Pierce Brown narrated by: Tim Gerard Reynolds, John Curless, Moira Quirk, James Langton & Rendah Heywood on audiobook so I can be ready for Light Bringer‘s release next month.

* That’s hyperbole.**

** I hope.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished Reed Farrel Coleman’s Sleepless City (and am still reeling!) and the perfectly pleasant Posthumous Education by Drew Hayes, Kirby Heyborne (Narrator) on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be the UF Pure of Heart by Danielle Parker, a Literary Local, and my next audiobook should be Chaos Choreography by Seanan McGuire, Emily Bauer (Narrator), I’ve gotten behind a bit in my re-listening.

How’re you wrapping up June?

Hey, it’s the first day of Summer, an oddly cool one around here. The change of seasoned doesn’t impact my lifestyle too much–it just means a different kind of weather I’m avoiding by being inside most of the time. I mean, as long as there’s a functioning Air Conditioner and/or heater.

Wow, this might be my dullest opening yet. I’d best move right along to the WWW Wednesday.

I’m wrapping up reading Random Sh*t Flying Through the Air by Jackson Ford and just started listening to Posthumous Education by Drew Hayes, Kirby Heyborne (Narrator) on audiobook.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished a couple of mixed bags: Jon Rance’s The Worst Man and Murder Your Employer: The McMasters Guide to Homicide by Rupert Holmes, narrated by Neil Patrick Harris and Simon Vance on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be Killing Me by Michelle Gagnon—I hope it turns out half as amusing as it sounds because I’m going to need something lighter to help me deal with my next audiobook, Dark Age by Pierce Brown narrated by: Tim Gerard Reynolds, John Curless, Moira Quirk, James Langton & Rendah Heywood.

I’m reading the new Sunny Randall book from the new Sunny Randall author: Robert B. Parker’s Bad Influence by Alison Gaylin and am listening to the intriguing If I Understood You, Would I Have This Look on My Face?: My Adventures in the Art and Science of Relating and Communicating by Alan Alda (Narrator) on audiobook.

What did you recently finish reading?

The most recent books I’ve finished are David Rosenfelt’s Flop Dead Gorgeous and It’s Great to Suck at Something by Karen Rinaldi on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be The Worst Man by Jon Rance because I forgot that it’s what I put here last week. Oops. And my next audiobook should be Murder Your Employer: The McMasters Guide to Homicide by Rupert Holmes (yeah, it turns out, that one), Narrated by Neil Patrick Harris and Simon Vance.

Tell me about what you’re reading!

Here we are on the 159th day of 2023 and I’m still trying to catch up on my plans for February. This is not so much a complaint on my part as an observation about how bad I am at planning. A true sign that I either need to do less of it, or a whole lot more of it to improve with practice.

It’s also a Wednesday, so that makes it time for WWW Wednesday, so let’s get on with that.

I’m reading The Ink Black Heart by Robert Galbraith and I feel like I’m going to be reading it for the rest of the summer. I’m listening to The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin, Scott Brick (Narrator) on audiobook, which is both considerably shorter and a charming little novel that I can’t believe Scott Brick is narrating (it’s working, but he’s about the last guy I’d have thought of).

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished Adam Holcombe’s A Necromancer Called Gam Gam and The Girl Who Could Move Sh*t with Her Mind by Jackson Ford, narrated by Lauren Patten and Graham Halstead.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be the comedic The Worst Man by Jon Rance, Rance is an author I’d been wanting to return to—now’s as good a time as any, right? My next audiobook should be Strong Female Character by Fern Brady, I just stumbled across it yesterday and it struck me as interesting.

Have you been reading anything good, or at least interesting, lately?

The day I’ve long-dreaded has arrived–I don’t mean a WWW Wednesday, or the end of May. The last episode of Ted Lasso is released today, and I’m just not ready for it*. I’d best distract myself by talking some books.

* Yes, I know that Season 3 has had its detractors, and I haven’t loved every moment of it, but I’ll just tell you now, keep your negativity about the show away from me.

I’m reading Real Tigers by Mick Herron (it only took me 6 months since the last one) and I’m still listening to Iron Gold by Pierce Brown, Narrated by: Tim Gerard Reynolds, John Curless, Julian Elfer, and Aedin Moloney on audiobook.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished Mark Pepper’s Man on a Murder Cycle, a fast and furious read. The last audiobook I finished is still The Only Truly Dead by Rob Parker, Warren Brown (Narrator), a great way to end the trilogy.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be A Necromancer Called Gam Gam by Adam Holcombe, a book I have to try based on the title alone. My next audiobook should still be a revisit of The Girl Who Could Move Sh*t with Her Mind Narrated by Lauren Patten and Graham Halstead.

I’m going for a little light reading with 100 Places to See After You Die: A Travel Guide to the Afterlife by Ken Jennings and am listening to Iron Gold by Pierce Brown, Narrated by: Tim Gerard Reynolds, John Curless, Julian Elfer, and Aedin Moloney on audiobook (I’m not crazy about adding the three new narrators, but Reynolds is probably relieved for the help).

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished two great thrillers: Joe Ide’s Fixit and The Only Truly Dead by Rob Parker, Warren Brown (Narrator) on audio.

My next book should be Man on a Murder Cycle by Mark Pepper (which is hopefully at least half as good as the premise) and my next audiobook should be a revisit of The Girl Who Could Move Sh*t with Her Mind Narrated by Lauren Patten and Graham Halstead.

I’m reading Questland by Carrie Vaughn–someone left me a comment last year telling me to go into it with low expectations–and I’m trying that, but it’s hard considering it’s Vaughn. Yesterday, I started listening to The Chinese Groove by Kathryn Ma, James Chen (Narrator) on audiobook. I haven’t found my groove with it yet, but I’m hoping I will.

What did you recently finish reading?

Yesterday I finished two books that weren’t what I expected and are both going to be hard to talk about because I have too much to say about them: Alix E. Harrow’s The Once and Future Witches and This Bird Has Flown by Susanna Hoffs, narrated by Susanna Hoffs and Juliet Stevenson on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be Fixit by Joe Ide (a triumph of a due date over my plans). My next audiobook should be what promises to be a dynamite conclusion to the Thirty Miles Trilogy—The Only Truly Dead by Rob Parker, Warren Brown (Narrator).

What about you?

I’ve finished 4 print books in 4 days (probably not going to make it 5 in 5), which is a great feeling—it’s been too long
since I’ve done something like that. It’s even better that I’ve enjoyed all the books I’ve been finishing—tis a good roll to be on.

I’m reading Nic Blake and the Remarkables: The Manifestor Prophecy by Angie Thomas—which is about as far from her previous work as I can imagine. I’m listening to Hammered by Lindsay Buroker, Vivienne Leheny (Narrator) on audiobook.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished Intisar Khanani’s Sunbolt (and had to fight the impulse to move right on to the sequel). Last week, I finished Straight Man by Richard Russo, Sam Freed (Narrator) on audio. It’s as good as I remembered but hits a little differently now that I’m the same age as Hank.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow (after spending more than a month on my “On Deck” list) and my next audiobook should be This Bird Has Flown by Susanna Hoffs, narrated by Susanna Hoffs and Juliet Stevenson.

How’s your reading going lately?

I’d like to say right now that I’m on the verge of life calming down and my regular routines returning—allowing me to get back on track with everything here, but I think I should make sure those chicks make it out of their shell before I start tallying them up. So in the meantime, let’s just take a glance at the WWW for the week, okay?

I’m reading The Winter of Frankie Machine by Don Winslow and am listening to Straight Man by Richard Russo, Sam Freed (Narrator) on audiobook. I’d been thinking about finding time for a re-read of this book lately, and (probably thanks to Lucky Hank) there it was on my library’s new addition shelf, so sure, why not try the audiobook?

What did you recently finish reading?

I had a semi-productive Saturday and was able to finish Kneading Journalism by Tony Ganzer, Chain-Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah and the audiobook of Morning Star by Pierce Brown, Tim Gerard Reynolds (Narrator) on audio. Not just a productive day, but a really rewarding day.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be the latest Bree Taggert novel, Lie to Her by Melinda Leigh and my next audiobook should be Hammered by Lindsay Buroker, Vivienne Leheny (Narrator), a UF that could be a lot of fun.

How are you starting May?

My reading this week has been greatly reduced (actually didn’t crack a book yesterday at all, a true rarity). Part of that is due to work (just a couple of training days), but the biggest thing is that the Grandcritter has arrived, and I’ve had a hard time focusing on anything that isn’t him. He’s a wonderful little guy, and cuter than everything that’s not Grogu—and even that knight might not be able to compete with the Critter (don’t worry, I’m not going to plaster the page with a bunch of pictures). So, yeah, it turns out something can trump books in this reader’s life. Still, I managed to get almost enough material for this post.

I seem to have taken a break from Kneading Journalism by Tony Ganzer, but I will get back to it today. I’m reading Chain-Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah and am listening to Morning Star by Pierce Brown, Tim Gerard Reynolds (Narrator) on audiobook, it’s hard to know which is more brutal—but I’m leaning toward Chain-Gang All-Stars, if only because the future described there is a lot closer to when we are now (and it’s much more likely to happen than Brown’s future).

What did you recently finish reading?

I most recently finished Dave Barry’s Swamp Story, a truly zany story, and The Stench of Honolulu by Jack Handey (Narrator) on audio, which wanted to be zany.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be The Winter of Frankie Machine by Don Winslow and I haven’t even thought about what my next audiobook should be, thankfully, Morning Star is a long one, so I have some time before I have to come up with something.
