Here we are, knocking at the end of June, preparing for that wonderful time of the year where it seems like half of the people in my subdivision are trying to terrify my dogs into moving to Canada. Why don’t we commemorate it with a WWW Wednesday? My current book is taking a lot out of me–and it’s cutting into my audiobook time, so I’m not making a lot of progress with those, either. I’m not complaining (much), because it’s such a good book–but man, it’s taking a lot out of me.

I’m making slow and steady progress through the monumental The Border by Don Winslow. I’m listening to Songbird by Peter Grainger, Gildart Jackon (Narrator) on audiobook, it’s a spin-off or sequel or continuation or…something to the DC Smith series and it’s very strange listening to this next phase with these characters (good! but strange).

What did you recently finish reading?

I most recently finished Lee Goldberg’s Movieland and Daughter of the Morning Star by Craig Johnson, George Guidall (Narrator) on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be A World Without “Whom”: The Essential Guide to Language in the BuzzFeed Age by Emmy J. Favilla and my next audiobook should be My Mess Is a Bit of a Life: Adventures in Anxiety by Georgia Pritchett, Katherine Parkinson (Narrator) (I largely checked this out for the title).

What about you?

I’m very glad that the U.S. is now celebrating Juneteenth, but I tell you what, that day off is messing with me. I did manage to get some good reading in over the weekend, but still feel like I’m out of sync with reality. Anyway, let’s tackle this WWW Wednesday, and see if that helps calibrate my mind.*

I’m reading Movieland by Lee Goldberg—it’s so good to be back in Eve Ronin’s world—and I’m wrapping up Amari and the Night Brothers by B. B. Alston, Imani Parks (Narrator) on audiobook.

I just finished David Rosenfelt’s predictably fun Holy Chow, K.B. Jensen’s very strange Love and Other Monsters in the Dark, and We Are Legion (We Are Bob) by Dennis E. Taylor, Ray Porter (Narrator) on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

Two of my most anticipated 2022 releases arrived at my house yesterday (The Botanist by M.W. Craven and The Self-Made Widow by Fabian Nicieza), and I’m beyond tempted to throw out my carefully (for me) constructed plan and dive into them. I’m pretty sure I won’t do that, but you never know. My next book should be The Border by Don Winslow, it’s been a week and a half since I read a paper book—that’ll be a nice change—even if this thing is intimidating. My next audiobook should be a quick return trip to Daughter of the Morning Star by Craig Johnson, George Guidall (Narrator).

What are you reading here in the first few (official) days of Summer?

I don’t have the vim, much less the vigor, to come up with an introduction, let’s move on with the WWW Wednesday!

I’m reading the first in a SF trilogy, Against All Odds by Jeffrey H. Haskell, and the short story collection, Love and Other Monsters in the Dark by K.B. Jensen. I’m listening to We Are Legion (We Are Bob) by Dennis E. Taylor, Ray Porter (Narrator) on audiobook–it’s a blast and Ray Porter is a great narrator.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished the procedural Payback by R.C. Bridgestock and the novella Deep Hole by Don Winslow, Ed Harris (Narrator) on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be A Wash of Black by Chris McDonald and my next audiobook should be Amari and the Night Brothers by B. B. Alston, Imani Parks (Narrator)–I really could use its sense of fun and hope.

If you’d asked me Saturday, I’d have told you that by this point in the week, I’d have 6-7 posts up (not including this one). Instead, here’s #4 for the week. It’s a strange combination of things causing me to stumble this week. First, there’s just no gas in the tank—I’ve fought sleep every time I sit down to write/read. Also, I have so much to say about two of the books that I can’t get anything down—too many ideas trying to get out of my brain at once (think of those videos of people rushing the door on Black Friday). So I’m going to put those aside for a minute, assemble this WWW Wednesday, and snooze for a bit. Maybe full paragraphs and complete sentences lie on the other side…

I’m reading Crazy in Poughkeepsie by Daniel Pinkwater (yeah, last week I said it was going to be next—but I got distracted by a couple of things) and am listening to How to Take Over the World: Practical Schemes and Scientific Solutions for the Aspiring Supervillain by Ryan North on audiobook. I don’t have plans to apply anything I learn there, but you never know.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished S. Reed’s There Goes the Neighborhood in advance of a Book Tour stop tomorrow and Hellbound Guilds & Other Misdirections by Annette Marie and Rob Jacobsen, Narrated by Iggy Toma on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be Payback by R.C. Bridgestock, I bought the first three books in this series on an impulse a few months ago. . My next audiobook should be We Are Legion (We Are Bob) by Dennis E. Taylor, Ray Porter (Narrator), which was kind of an impulse grab, hopefully it pays off.

It’s June 1, and what better way to step into the month than with a WWW Wednesday? These posts are me at my most organized and structured, and it feels really nice to be that way on June 1. A feeling that will last until…maybe 9 pm?

I just finished Joanne Jackson’s A Snake in the Raspberry Patch, a tale of small-town Canadian crime. I also just finished the third faux-True Crime, A Line to Kill by Anthony Horowitz, Rory Kinnear (Narrator) on audio.

My next book should be Crazy in Poughkeepsie by Daniel Pinkwater, which promises to be a burst of oddness and light, and my next audiobook should be Gated Prey by Lee Goldberg, Nicol Zanzarella (Narrator).

Hey, you hoopy froods, what are you reading?

As I sat down to write posts for today last night, I kept getting distracted by Primary Election results—in Idaho, for good or ill, the Republican Primary election is more important than the General Election in November—state races are all but certain after it. So for every half-sentence I write, I end up spending 5 minutes looking at numbers—who knows what I’ll get written for today. At the very least, I cobbled together a WWW Wednesday.

I’m reading the fantasy novel The Traitor’s Heir by Anna Thayer and am listening to the very amusing This Is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Young Doctor by Adam Kay on audiobook.

I grabbed the wrong book off the shelf last week, so the last book I finished was J.C. Jackson’s Conjured Defense and yesterday I finished Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson, Marin Ireland (Narrator) on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be the UF short story collection, Heroic Hearts edited by Jim Butcher and Kerrie Hughes, and my next audiobook should be Magic Kingdom for Sale–Sold! by Terry Brooks, Jeremy Arthur (Narrator). I read that a few dozen times in the last century, and figured it was time to revisit.

Hopefully, you’re not as distracted as I am (unless you want to be)—what are you reading?

It’s the middle of the week, the day where I figure out just where I am and what I’m doing next and tell you about it. It’s a good exercise and for at least 15 minutes I feel like I have a handle on things. It’s a little thing I like to call WWW Wednesday! (I like to call it that because that’s its name, I’m funny that way)

Yesterday, I finished Mike Lupica’s Robert B. Parker’s Revenge Tour, which was more than I hoped, and Funny Farm: My Unexpected Life with 600 Rescue Animals by Laurie Zaleski, Erin Moon (Narrator) on audio, which was not at all what I expected.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be The Traitor’s Heir by Anna Thayer, for that 12 Books Challenge. My next audiobook should be Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson, Marin Ireland (Narrator), something I’ve been thinking about for a while.

And what about you?

It’s a special Star Wars Day edition of WWW Wednesday! Well, okay, it’s not—I couldn’t come up with enough puns/riffs based on Star Wars to justify it, but everything else today has Star Wars plastered all over it, I had to go along, right?

At work this week, there’s stuff going on preventing me from listening to audiobooks—I’m glad to be occupied, but I’m really enjoying my current listen and am frustrated that it’s taking so long to find out what’s going to happen. The last 3 books I’ve read have taken 1-2 days longer than I expected, too (well, except the novella, which only took 30 more minutes than expected, still…). Not a big deal, but it feels like I’m behind on things—due to an imaginary self-imposed schedule. It’s stupid, but that’s where my mind is the last two weeks. Anyone else ever feel that way?

I just finished Paul Cornell’s Rosebud, which is about as far away from Lucas’ creation as you can get in SF. The last audiobook I finished was Taming Demons for Beginners by Annette Marie, Cris Dukehart (Narrator) on audio, which I ended up liking more than I indicated last week.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be Robert B. Parker’s Revenge Tour by Mike Lupica, his fourth (and final) take on Sunny Randall and my next audiobook should be Funny Farm: My Unexpected Life with 600 Rescue Animals by Laurie Zaleski, Erin Moon (Narrator).

Is the Force with you on any of your recent/current reads? (ha! got one reference in)

We are in the backstretch of this week, the last of April, and I keep finding myself making plans for June and July, as if May doesn’t even exist. This is a little ironic, because I’ve got a lot of commitments lined up for May. Maybe it’s because I have so much of the month already scheduled that I can’t focus on it. I was going somewhere when I started this paragraph, and I can’t remember where it was. Guess that means that it’s time to get on with the WWW Wednesday of it all.

I’m reading Of Claws and Fangs: Stories from the World of Jane Yellowrock and Soulwood by Faith Hunter for a Book Tour next week and am listening to Taming Demons for Beginners by Annette Marie, Cris Dukehart (Narrator) on audiobook (if I wasn’t really curious about other parts of this series, I’m not sure I’d stick it out—this protagonist is doing nothing but making foolish/stupid moves—I have to pause occasionally just to growl at her).

I just finished K.J. Parker’s surprising Sixteen Ways to Defend a Walled City and the classic The Return of the King by J.R.R. Tolkien, Andy Serkis (Narrator) on audio.

My next book should be The Knave of Secrets by Alex Livingston—also for a Book Tour next week—and my next audiobook should be Tuesday Mooney Talks To Ghosts by Kate Racculia, Lauren Fortgang (Narrator)—which has been on my TBR forever, and I just stumbled onto the audiobook. Yay!
