The month is melting away and I’m starting to worry about my reading goal for the month (which is about as lame as it sounds, I realize, but that’s where I am). Returning to the office has really messed with my reading, and has wrecked my audiobook listening, so not a lot has changed since last week, but, still it’s time for WWW Wednesday!

I’m reading the new Quinn Colson novel, The Heathens by Ace Atkins, and am listening to the first Peter Ash novel, The Drifter by Nick Petrie, Stephen Mendel (Narrator), on audiobook.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished Neil Lancaster’s Dead Man’s Grave–a gripping read–and Veiled by Benedict Jacka, Gildart Jackson (Narrator) on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be All Together Now by Matthew Norman, with a striking premise. My next audiobook should be returning to the tales of the Tufa with Wisp of a Thing by Alex Bledsoe, Stefan Rudnicki (Narrator).

After 15 months of telecommuting, I’m back to just commuting–this is wrecking my sleep and reading–and therefore blogging–habits. I’m still managing to do some of all three, but I’m having to make plenty of adjustments. Which is why things are a little light here this week. Still, I have been able to scrape together enough for this WWW Wednesday.

I’m reading the very fun ARC for A Good Day for Chardonnay by Darynda Jones and am listening to Veiled by Benedict Jacka, Gildart Jackson (Narrator) on audiobook.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished Andy Redsmith’s Know Your Rites and the audiobook of Tales from the Folly by Ben Aaronovitch read by Aaronovitch and: Penelope Rawlins, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Alex Kingston, Ben Elliot, Shvorne Marks, Sam Peter Jackson, and Felix Grainger.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be August Snow by Stephen Mack Jones, I’m looking forward to seeing what waits for me there. My next audiobook should be The Drifter by Nick Petrie, Stephen Mendel (Narrator) (largely because my library just added it to their Overdrive collection)..

What about you? Reading anything good?

I’m writing from a refreshingly chilly hotel 607 miles south(ish) from home, in Cedar City, UT. The trip is making things a little strange on the reading front (and non-existent on the audiobook front)–but I still think I have enough fodder for July’s first WWW Wednesday!

I’m reading Know Your Rites by Andy Redsmith (a book I meant to read two years ago) and the audiobook A Bad Day for Sunshine by Darynda Jones, Lorelei King (Narrator) is providing our road trip entertainment.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished Liam Perrin’s Sir Thomas the Hesitant and the Table of Less Valued Knights and last week I wrapped up Blood Trade by Faith Hunter, Khristine Hvam (Narrator) on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be The Good Byline by Jill Orr (another book I meant to read two years ago) and if we have time on the return trip, we’ll listen to An Accidental Death by Peter Grainger, Gildart Jackson (Narrator), because my wife should meet DC Smith–otherwise, I have no idea what I’m doing next.

I’m reading the fifth Ben Bracken novel, The Watchman by Rob Parker, and am continuing my march through the Jane Yellowrock series by listening to Blood Trade by Faith Hunter, Khristine Hvam (Narrator) on audiobook.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished Spencer Quinn’s Tender is the Bite (my post about that should have gone up a couple of hours ago) and OCDaniel by Wesley King, Ramon De Ocampo (Narrator) on audio—a great YA read.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be In Plain Sight by Dan Willis—the start of a promising-looking series. Yes, I’ve said that before, but I shouldn’t get distracted this time. I have no idea what my next audiobook is going to be—I’m on a road trip with Mrs. Irresponsible Reader next week, we’ll probably listen to something, but it’s TBD.

I’m reading Dead Ground by M. W. Craven, and if I believed in an Id, mine would be screaming at me for taking time to do anything but read it for the next 200+ pages (like compiling this post). I’m also going through Hidden by Benedict Jacka, Gildard Jackson (Narrator) on audiobook.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished Rob Parker’s Till Morning is Nigh, probably the best of the bunch. I also finally finished Scarface and the Untouchable: Al Capone, Eliot Ness, and the Battle for Chicago by Max Allan Collins and A. Brad Schwartz, Stefan Rudnicki (Narrator) on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be Dog Eat Dog by David Rosenfelt (you have to wonder how he waited for the 22nd book to use this title) and my next audiobook should be Death’s Rival by Faith Hunter, Khristine Hvam (Narrator) as I continue to revisit the Jane Yellowrock series in audio.

I just finished John McMahon’s A Good Kill and Ink & Sigil by Kevin Heane, Luke Daniels (Narrator) on audio (Daniels has to be up for an award for maintaining that accent for so long, right?).

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be The Keepers by Jeffrey B. Burton (one of most anticipated reads of 2021) and my next audiobook should be the fifth Alex Verus, Hidden by Benedict Jacka, Gildard Jackson (Narrator).

You all reading anything good?

It is the 160th day of 2021, also known as June 9. That gives us all a mere 205 days to wrap up things up for the year. Time’s flying. (and based on what I haven’t accomplished this week, I’m going to need every one of those days to write up the books I’ve read up to today)

I’m reading The Penny Black by Rob Parker and have just started listening to The Hum and the Shiver by Alex Bledsoe, narrated by Emily Janice Card and Stefan Rudnicki on audiobook–I’ve read this three times, and can’t wait to revisit it.

I just finished the second in the revitalized Hollows series, Kim Harrison’s Million Dollar Demon and the comedy/horrorCreature Feature by Steven Paul Leiva, narrated by Seamus Dever and Juliana Dever on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be the 3rd Stonebridge Mystery, Meat is Murder by Chris McDonald. My next audiobook should be Ink & Sigil by Kevin Heane, Luke Daniels (Narrator) to prime the mental pump for the sequel here in a couple of weeks.

The Monday holiday caught me a little off-guard, I really wasn’t ready to put together a WWW Wednesday, but I just remembered what day it was and I needed a little break anyway, so here we go!

I just started Lycanthropy and Other Chronic Illnesses by Kristen O’Neal, which looks promising and am listening to Raven Cursed by Faith Hunter, Khristine Hvam (Narrator) on audiobook.

I just finished the Lee Matthew Goldberg’s Runaway Train, a nifty coming-of-age story, and the fun The Authorities by Scott Meyer, Luke Daniels (Narrator) on audio.

My next book should be the second in the rejuvinated Hollows series: Million Dollar Demon by Kim Harrison. My next audiobook should be Nowhere to Run by C. J. Box, David Chandler (Narrator), which’ll get me practically half-way to caught up with this series.

What did you just finish/start?

I’ve had to stop trying on a couple of posts for today, they’re just going to take more work than I’m ready for. But I can check in with a WWW Wednesday, which I find interesting (both to put together and to read other people’s), I hope you do, too—’cuz that’s all I’ve got in me today.

I’m reading The Bounty by Janet Evanovich with Steve Hamilton (unless it’s dramatically better than the previous novel—a very low bar—this will be my last Fox & O’Hare book) and am continuing my resisting of the Alex Verus series with Chosen by Benedit Jacka, Gildart Jackson (Narrator) on audiobook.

I just finished the second Ben Bracken thriller, Rob Parker’s Morte Point and Three Mages and a Margarita by Annette Marie, Cris Dukehart (Narrator) on audio, the first in a promising UF series.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be the 90s throwback Runaway Train by Lee Matthew Goldberg and my next audiobook should be The Authorities by Scott Meyer, Luke Daniels (Narrator)—I’m a little nervous about Meyer outside of Magic 2.0, but I know with Daniels at least it’ll be a good listen.

What about you, what are your current/recent/ reads?

It may seem like I’m not making a lot of progress lately on various books–and that’s only because I’m not. Work’s been crazy and I’m having a hard time finding the time to read–and when I do, there’s not a lot of energy to do it, I’m having a hard time focusing enough to keep going with audiobooks, too. Also, I’ve been beta reading an upcoming novel–I’ll talk more about that soon, but that’s been taking time away from the regular reading (which is not a complaint–great read, I can’t wait to tell you to go buy the book in a couple of months).

Anyway, that’s just to explain why there hasn’t been a lot of turnover in the last few of these posts, but maybe this WWW Wednesday will be the beginning of a return to normal.

I’m reading The Jigsaw Man by Nadine Matheson and am revisiting (for the first time since the late 80s) All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot, Christopher Timothy (Narrator) on audiobook.

I just finished Scott Ryan’s fantastic Moonlighting: An Oral History and the twisted fun that is A Man With One of Those Faces by Caimh McDonnell, Morgan C. Jones (Narrator) on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be the second Ben Bracken novel, Morte Point by Rob Parker and my next audiobook should be The Data Detective: Ten Easy Rules to Make Sense of Statistics by Tim Harford (who also narrates it). I’m sure that past-me had a good reason for it when he placed the reserve, I just wish I remembered it*.

* I’m sure it’s a fine book, but really past me–statistics???
