I’m reading the zany Big Trouble in Little Italy by Nicole Sharp, and am listening to Moon Over Soho by Ben Aaronovitch, read by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith on audiobook (if only so I can remember how good the rest are in comparison).

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished Alex Robins’ Panacea and The Night Ends with Fire by K. X. Song, read by Natalie Naudus on audio. Two books that were heavier than I anticipated (which says more about my expectations than anything)

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be Ways and Truths and Lives by Matt Edwards and my next audiobook should be Zero Stars, Do Not Recommend by MJ Wassmer, read by Stephen R. Thorne. Yes, that audiobook was in this spot last week, too. But I hit play on the wrong app before I remembered that fact.

How’re you wrapping up August?

It’s a race to the finish line for this year’s 20 Books of Summer (one of those self-imposed goals that becomes all the more important as the deadline gets closer but is totally meaningless in reality). It’s mathematically possible (maybe even probable) that I’ll finish in time. But it’ll be by the proverbial skin of my teeth, the sands of the hourglass will be almost depleted, etc., etc. I failed when I set up my reading order and ended up with three straight fantasy novels, which might be too much of that genre in a row for me. Hopefully, the varied voices/tones in the books will be enough.

Today, I’m starting Bard Tidings by Paul Regnier, and am listening to The Night Ends with FireE by K. X. Song, read by Natalie Naudus on audiobook.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished H.C. Newell’s Curse of the Fallen—I’m reeling from the ending (but really shouldn’t be)—and Malibu Burning by Lee Golberg, read by Eric Conger on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be Panacea by Alex Robins (I still love that cover) and my next audiobook should be Zero Stars, Do Not Recommend by MJ Wassmer, read by Stephen R. Thorne (that cover makes me think of a Rom-Com for some reason)

What kinds of things are you reading lately?

Noted traveler and tea aficionado, Arthur Dent, once commented that he “could never get the hang of Thursdays.” And I frequently get where he was coming from. Thankfully, today’s a Wednesday—and I can get a handle on them. If nothing else, it’s the day I ramble about the books I’ve been/am/will be reading this week and get intimidated/inspired by what those who comment here (notably, Allyson Johnson) say in response.

I’m reading Heart of Fire by Raina Nightingale, and am just starting No Two Persons by Erica Bauermeister, read by a full cast on audiobook (thanks to Carol for the recommendation).

What did you recently finish reading?

The last books that I finished were A. Y. Chan’s The Legendary Mo Seto and Homerooms and Hall Passes by Tom O’Donnell, read by James Fouhey on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

I’ve got some good banter on my horizon, my next book should be Blood Reunion by JCM Berne and my next audiobook should be Fool Moon by Jim Butcher, read by James Marsters.

Are you reading anything worth talking about?

Did you know that we are two days away from National Book Lover’s Day here in the States? (yes, there is a Day for everything under the sun—it’s also Veep Day, Shop Online for Groceries Day, National Rice Pudding Day, National Hand Holding Day, and Co-Working Day). Which makes it at least the 5th consecutive year that I don’t have anything prepped for it. You’d think that’d be a gimme of a post, right? But I’ve yet to come up with a decent idea.*

Also, around these parts, Every day is Book Lover’s Day. Anyway, I felt like I needed a couple of nonsense sentences before we got to the meat of this post. Let’s get on with things.

What are you currently reading?

I’m reading Mystery Science Theater 3000: A Cultural History by Matt Foy and Christopher J. Olson, which might be trying too hard to explain humor. I’m listening to Amari and the Great Game by B. B. Alston, read by Imani Parks on audiobook to remind me exactly where the story has us before I open the third volume.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished Brock Poulsen’s Bizarre Frontier Omnibus #1, and that will not be the last time I read Poulsen* . I also just finished and enjoyed Mortal Coil by Derek Landy, read by Brian Bowles on audio, which was fun even if I had trouble adjusting to a new narrator, and was troubled that I let my son read this in grade school.

* In case he reads this, I hope he notices that I spelled his name correctly this time.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next books will be some fun MG-lit, I’ll be reading The Legendary Mo Seto by A. Y. Chan and my next audiobook should be Homerooms and Hall Passes by Tom O’Donnell, read by James Fouhey (the premise alone gets it 3 Stars).

What kinds of things have caught your eye lately?

July is ending in just a few hours, and I’m feeling the pressure when it comes to all the things I wanted to do this Summer (or this month, truth be told, but I think it’s too late for that). It has cooled down by a few degrees here, so that helps. Especially if you think of the gray skies as being full of rain clouds, and not wildfire smoke.

That’s a dark and not-readerly direction, eh? Let’s see if I can get back on track.

Today I’m diving into the ARC of The Last Shield by Cameron Johnston, and I hope it’s half as good as it looks. I’m also listening to the very fun and relatable Why We Read: On Bookworms, Libraries, and Just One More Page Before Lights Out by Shannon Reed, read by Paige McKinney on audiobook.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished J. Brandon Lowry’s The Glass Frog, a charming little read, and Midnight Riot/Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch, read by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith on audio—which was as fun to revisit as I expected.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be The Nameless Restaurant by Tao Wong and my next audiobook should be What’s Eating Jackie Oh by Patricia Park, read by Ami Park. I didn’t mean to pick a theme there, but I seem to have done so.

I’m midway into  This Is Who We Are Now by James Bailey, and really am not sure where it’s going, but I’m enjoying the ride. I’m listening to A Study In Scarlet Women by Sherry Thomas, read by Kate Reading (a voice I should’ve recognized) on audiobook, I wasn’t crazy about this for the first few chapters, but I am finding it pretty compelling listening. A nice take on Holmes and Watson, too.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished S.L. Rowland’s Cursed Cocktails, which was perfectly charming, and Swiped by L.M. Chilton, read by Georgia Maguire on audio, which was just as charming—just in a very different way.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be A Farewell to Arfs by Spencer Quinn—I need my Chet fix. I’ve turned a friend onto Peter Grant, and feel like I could use a refresher as I talk to him, so my next audiobook should be Midnight Riot/Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch, read by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith.

What kinds of goodies are you dipping into this week?

Why do I keep doing this to myself? “I’ll need a break from this Non-Fiction book occasionally, so I’ll read this novel, too.” It almost never works well, and I end up making tiny progress in both–yet I don’t want to press pause on one to just finish the other. Am I alone in this silliness?

It’s days like this that make me so glad to be a bookworm/bookwyrm/ink drinker and not someone who enjoys spending time outside—as I post this, it’s 107° F. No thank you. I’d be like one of those guys at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Lambert, which is the least steampunk-ish steampunk novel I’ve ever read (at the 30% or so mark) and is also the best thing that Lambert has done to date, so what do I care? I’m listening to Storm Front by Jim Butcher, read by James Marsters on audiobook, because it’s been too long since I spent time with Harry.

I just finished Jordan Harper’s The Last King of California and Breaking the Dark by Lisa Jewell, read by Helen Laser on audio.

I’m reading Winter Lost by Patricia Briggs, and am listening to A Door in the Dark by Scott Reintgen, read by Jesse Vilinsky on audiobook–it’s a very strange semi-zombie Fantasy novel. Thankfully, there’s only one zombie-ish thing wandering around. (still, I shook a virtual fist at the friend who recommended it to me).

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished Bruce Borgos’s Shades of Mercy–and Borgos was not messing around with this sequel. The last audiobook I finished was Labyrinth by Kat Richardson, read by Mia Barron.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be for The Last King of California by Jordan Harper and my next audiobook should be Breaking the Dark by Lisa Jewell, read by Helen Laser. I’ve been wanting to read this Harper book for ages, meanwhile, I didn’t know anything about the audiobook until yesterday. But I’m curious about what Marvel’s trying on the novel front, might as well start here, right?

I’m reading The Book of Perilous Dishes by Doina Rusti, translated by James Christian Brown, and am listening to Labyrinth by Kat Richardson, read by Mia Barron on audiobook.

Yesterday I finished Wesley Parker’s Detours and Do-overs and Robert Germaux’s Grammar Sex and Other Stuff: A Collection of (mostly humorous) Essays. I most recently finished The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi, read by Wil Wheaton on audiobook, and at least temporarily set aside One in the Chamber by Robin Peguero, read by Zion Jang because it just wasn’t working for me (but I can see why it would for many people).

My next book should be the ARC of Shades of Mercy by Bruce Borgos—I think this series has legs, and I’m eager to be proven correct. My next audiobook should be A Door in the Dark by Scott Reintgen, read by Jesse Vilinsky, assuming the friend who is currently listening to our library’s copy (and recommended it to me) finishes before I finish Labryinth.
