It’s time for the penultimate WWW Wednesday of 2022!

This meme was formerly hosted by MizB at A Daily Rhythm and revived on Taking on a World of Words—and shown to me by Aurore-Anne-Chehoke at Diary-of-a-black-city-girl.

The Three Ws are:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

Easy enough, right?

What are you currently reading?

I’m reading the very charming Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett and am continuing my revisit of InCryptid by listening to Midnight Blue-Light Special by Seanan McGuire, Emily Bauer (Narrator) on audiobook.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished Akwaeke Emezi’s Pet, which was…odd and powerful. My most recent audiobook was Secrets Typed in Blood by Stephen Spotswood, Kirsten Potter (Narrator) on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be Yes, Chef: A Memoir by Marcus Samuelsson and Veronica Chambers. Assuming I get my post about All These Worlds finished in time, my next audiobook should be Heaven’s River by Dennis E. Taylor, Ray Porter (Narrator) (otherwise, I’m not sure).

What about you?

  1. I’m currently reading at a lot of things, but not loving any of them much:

“The Map and the Territory” by Michel Houllebeque, on the recommendation of a friend. It won the Goncourt Prize in France, but so far not much is going on – the protagonist is a complete nebbish.

“Seven Gothic Tales” by Isak Dinesen. Sooo Scandinavian – so far we have seven people marooned together in an attic with flood all around and it looks like they are each going to tell a story – sort of a frigid “Canterbury Tales” . I’d like it more maybe if I were reading it in the summer — it’s so cold in that attic!

“Long Ago in France” by M.F.K Fisher. A memoir of days in Dijon, so low-key as to almost inaudible.

“Assignment in Brittany” by Helen McInnis . My sister recommended this doppelgänger story as being in the tradition of du Maurier’s “The Scapegoat” – so far, the plot is so obvious and the protagonist again so puppet—like I can’t get into it.

And I have a cold, so I fell back on Trollope again – “Phineas Finn”, one of my favorites of the Palliser series.

Just finished “The King Must Die” by Mary Renault. I had read the sequel, “Bull from the Sea” earlier this year, and thought it was a bit dated, The first book is better, a very ingenious re-imagining of the tale of Theseus and the Labryinth and the Minotaur.

And I reread “the Hunger Games”, not intending to do more than remind myself how it began, but it is such a page -turner I stayed up past my bedtime finishing it.

And of course I’m still working at “Brothers Karamasov” and “The Unwinding”

Next who knows? If I finish half of what I’m currently reading by year’s end I’ll be pleased.

Wow. That feels ADD-inducing. Especially if you’re not loving them that much.

In particular, not sure a frigid Canterbury Tales would be that enjoyable now (especially if you’re in a state suffering the winter storms this week!)

  2. I can’t wait to read The Encyclopedia of Faeries!
