Four posts on a Wednesday? I guess it’s bound to happen sometime, eh? Don’t really have time for an intro, so let’s get on with the WWW!

This meme was formerly hosted by MizB at A Daily Rhythm and revived on Taking on a World of Words—and shown to me by Aurore-Anne-Chehoke at Diary-of-a-black-city-girl.

The Three Ws are:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

Easy enough, right?

What are you currently reading?

I’m reading the second Retired Detectives Club novel, Death at Paradise Palms by Steph Broadribb. I’m still strolling through You Took The Last Bus Home: The Poems of Brian Bilston by Brian Bilston. I’m also listening to The Green Ember by S.D. Smith, Joel Clarkson (Narrator) on audiobook.

What did you recently finish reading?

Earlier today, I finished Quenby Olson’s Miss Percy’s Pocket Guide (to the Care and Feeding of British Dragons), an utterly charming read. I also recently finished Profiles in Ignorance: How America’s Politicians Got Dumb and Dumber by Andy Borowitz on audio, it was odd for Borowitz to be so earnest–more of that to come.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be the ARC of Fearless by M.W. Craven (actually, it should be something I’ve agreed to read for someone else, but it’s been sitting on my shelf ignored for too long, I can’t take its plaintive cries for attention anymore) and my next audiobook should be Golden Son by Pierce Brown, Tim Gerard Reynolds (Narrator).

Are you reading anything good?

  1. I’m currently not reading anything but periodicals, having binge-read five Larry McMurtry novels in a row.

The last two were presumably volumes 4 and 5 in the Duane Moore story. I read the last volume, “Rhino Ranch”, first, and loved it. It’s a very affectionate ending to a story of a community, not just a group of characters.

Then I discovered that I had skipped “When the LIght Goes”. I wish I hadn’t. Any writer who puts together over forty books is bound to have a dud. This is McMurtry’s.( I think my review of it on Amazon has been censored even though I put in a lot of blanks.)

In between McMurtry’s I read Randall Jarrett’s “Too Many Magicians”, which is second in a series. The characters are a mashup of Mycroft Holmes and Sherlock, Nero Wolfe and Whatshisname, with a lady sidekick reminiscent of Nora in “The Thin Man”. But the premise, an alternate universe where magic replaces science as a way to get things done, is delightful, so who cares if the characters are cardboard?

And I picked up a new version of Gaiman’s “Sandman: The Dream Hunters.” As an illustrated novel this was charming and evocative; the new version is a graphic novel. Muh of the mystery that accompanied the original illustrations is lost. Stick with the original.

On the same shelf was the latest “Sandman:Overture” which is a prequel to the series, written decades later. It’s mind-bending, and don’t think of taking it on unless you have read at least a few of the earlier/later volumes.

Next I’m getting back to Jonathan Franzen’s “The Corrections”, and maybe I’ll pick up something fluffy to read as a guilty pleasure. Any ideas?

Filing Jarrett’s book away for future reference. Shame to hear about the McMurty downer…

As far as lighter reads go, I’m on the verge of going on a Jesse Q. Sutanto binge.
