WWW Wednesday, May 31, 2023

The day I’ve long-dreaded has arrived–I don’t mean a WWW Wednesday, or the end of May. The last episode of Ted Lasso is released today, and I’m just not ready for it*. I’d best distract myself by talking some books.

* Yes, I know that Season 3 has had its detractors, and I haven’t loved every moment of it, but I’ll just tell you now, keep your negativity about the show away from me.

The Three Ws are:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

Easy enough, right?

What are you currently reading?

I’m reading Real Tigers by Mick Herron (it only took me 6 months since the last one) and I’m still listening to Iron Gold by Pierce Brown, Narrated by: Tim Gerard Reynolds, John Curless, Julian Elfer, and Aedin Moloney on audiobook.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished Mark Pepper’s Man on a Murder Cycle, a fast and furious read. The last audiobook I finished is still The Only Truly Dead by Rob Parker, Warren Brown (Narrator), a great way to end the trilogy.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be A Necromancer Called Gam Gam by Adam Holcombe, a book I have to try based on the title alone. My next audiobook should still be a revisit of The Girl Who Could Move Sh*t with Her Mind Narrated by Lauren Patten and Graham Halstead.

  1. I’m currently reading “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn”, a classic which I somehow missed growing up. I was thinking it was slow going, and then my kid sister visiting said “Oh, I love that book!” so I have to finish it. I’m also still working at “Pilgrim’s Progress” with Christiana still having her battles fought by GreatHeart – wish I could find someone to fight me into Heaven like that! And I’m going to get back to Nadine Gordimer’s collection of short stories, “Jump”.

I just finished “Untold Power” the story of how First Lady Edith Wilson effectively ran the country for eighteen months when her husband Woodrow was felled by a series of serious strokes. You thought Hillary Clinton was scheming and manipulative? Hah!

And I have just started “Her Honor” by LaDoris Cordell, who was the first black woman judge in California. It’s a fascinating series of anecdotes about her judicial career, leavened by observations about what isn’t working in our current judicial system and suggestions about how to fix it. Highly recommended! [Note: I bought the book at a lecture given by Cordell, who is a very charismatic speaker. ]

Next I will probably read something fluffy with no redeeming social value.

You’ve been working on A Tree Grows for a bit, must be a slow one. As is that section of Progress IMHO.

Her Honor looks like a good one.

  2. OH, I realize I forget to mention finishing “Lessons in Chemistry” by Bonnie Garmus, which is romping up the NYT Best Seller list as we speak. It’s a feminist chicklit romcom social satire which includes a brilliant and beautiful widow, her precocious child, clueless teachers, an anthropomorphic dog, some nasty testosterone-crazed men who get their comeuppance… what’s not to like?

you had me at “feminist chicklit romcom social satire”, if only for the combination

      • It is all the things Allyson Johnson mentioned. Except maybe romcom; I can see it, but I didn’t feel that vibe when I read it. It’s definitely worth seeking out though.

  3. Murder by Death

My husband and I were equally distraught about Ted Lasso coming to an end, and while season 3 might have its detractors, I have to say between the Amsterdam episode and the one that followed it (with the red string) … well, I haven’t laughed so hard in YEARS!

Absolutely. I get a little bit of the detraction, but just a little bit of it. And those last 2 episodes made up for any problems–as did those you mentioned.
