Thanks to the holiday yesterday, it’s a Wednesday that feels a lot like a Monday—only better because it’s closer to the end of the work week. Still, it’s a Wednesday, so that means it’s time for this quick check-in.

This meme was formerly hosted by MizB at A Daily Rhythm and revived on Taking on a World of Words—and shown to me by Aurore-Anne-Chehoke at Diary-of-a-black-city-girl.

The Three Ws are:

What do you think you’ll read next?

Easy enough, right?

What are you currently reading?

I’m reading The Curse of Silver of Pharaoh by Pip Ballantine, Tee Morris. I’m still listening to Dark Age by Pierce Brown narrated by: Tim Gerard Reynolds, John Curless, Moira Quirk, James Langton & Rendah Heywood on audiobook.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished Danielle Parker’s Pure of Heart, which proved to be a fun take on werewolves.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be The Bitter Past by Bruce Borgos and my next audiobook should still be Chaos Choreography by Seanan McGuire, Emily Bauer (Narrator).

  1. I’m currently reading Ann Patchett’s charming collection of essays,”These Precious Days”, and Nadine Gortimer’s amazing short stories in “Jump.”

I just finished reading “Horse”, Geraldine Brooks’ investigation of the great stallion Lexington, seen through a variety of points of view. I’m still digesting it – had to re-read the ending several times before I “got it.” I liked it better than “March”, but found the jumping around in time and POV unsettling.

I have also been re-reading some of the books I loved as a child – Alcott’s “Eight Cousins” and “Rose in Bloom” and Enright’s “Spiderweb for Two.” It struck me how safe the worlds portrayed in these books are, and how manageable the adventures of Rose, her cousins, and the four Melendy children. And how vanilla – there is a Chinese man in the Alcott books but he quickly becomes westernized; the Melendy’s live in a New York apartment and then an upstate village, with no whisper of ethnic or religious diversity. Of course, in the times these authors wrote, there probably was no diversity to speak of in their neighborhoods.

Yeah, probably not a lot of diversity in those neighborhoods, and that man in the Alcott books probably worked hard to get as Westernized as he could to make his life easier.

      Interesting looking reads altogether.

  2. I started Forged By Blood, which is a fantasy book that comes out in August. Not too far into it, but I like what I’ve read so far.

That looks promising! Will be sure to look for your comments on it!
