Another week has flown by, time for a WWW Wednesday.

This meme was formerly hosted by MizB at A Daily Rhythm and revived on Taking on a World of Words—and shown to me by Aurore-Anne-Chehoke at Diary-of-a-black-city-girl.

The Three Ws are:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

Easy enough, right?

What are you currently reading?

I’m reading the ARC for A Fatal Groove by Olivia Blacke, and I just started The Marlow Murder Club by Robert Thorogood, Nicolette McKenzie (Narrator) on audiobook.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished Matthew Hanover’s Not Prepared (hopefully you’ll be reading more about that here today) and Chaos Choreography by Seanan McGuire, Emily Bauer (Narrator) on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be the futuristic noir thriller The Eternity Fund by Liz Monument and my next audiobook should be Blue Like Me by Aaron Philip Clark, Preston Butler III (Narrator), where Finn is on the hunt for more dirty cops.

  1. I’m currently reading Daniel Mendelsohn’s “Lost”, chronicling in great detail his search for relatives killed in the Holocaust, enhanced by reflections on the nature of family and including extensive excerpts of Torah commentary – it’s very DENSE, but fascinating.

I just finished reading “Hello Beautiful”, a current bestseller which I did not like because a) it’s not very well written, lots of repetition, lots of telling instead of showing, too many points of view, the characters are caricatures. b) one of the caricatures nails me to the inch – and it’s not the character you are supposed to like. Ooh, painful!

Also finished reading Ann Patchett’s “These Precious Days” a wonderful collection of essays about her writing craft, her decision not to have children, her brushes with death and near-death, full of humanity and humor and hope. This should be on your bedside table and shared with friends.

Next, I might read “the Adventures of Kavalier and Clay” which you recommended, or I might read Faulkner’s “Intruder in the Dust”, or I might read a trashy book – depends on what I pick up next from the book cart.

That Patchett book looks good–filing that rec away. (as well as the warning about Hello Beautiful)

  2. I just started “Fearless” by M.W. Craven, and so far, it is definitely holding my interest. I’m especially hopeful that I end up enjoying the book as a whole, since this is my first foray into Craven’s work. I just finished “Bad Influence,” Alison Gaylin’s initial effort in the Sunny Randall series. It was okay, but a little disappointing in a couple of ways. She has Sunny reference her therapist (Susan Silverman) a few times, but there are no actual scenes between the two, unlike in the Sunny Randall books by Mike Lupica. Also, the plot at times felt a bit contrived. I’ll definitely check out Gaylin’s next effort in the series, but I’m hoping for better. Next up for me will be “Charm City Blues” by Matthew Norman, which has gotten good reviews. A final book note: Somehow, I missed the fact that Lupica is writing a Spenser novel, which will be out on November 28. Very much looking forward to his take on Parker’s iconic protagonist.

I’m having trouble finishing (or starting, for that matter) my post about Bad Influence–but it’ll sound a lot like what you said. Norman has yet to disappoint me, hope you like this one.

What did you think about Fearless?

Still reading “Fearless.” Will let you know my take when I finish it.
