GUEST POST: Upon Further Review . . . by Robert Germaux

Last week when I posted about Robert B. Parker’s Hot Property by Mike Lupica, I quipped “Robert Germaux to demur in the comment section (or in a Guest Post if he has a lot to get off of his chest).” The novelist/essayist took me up on that with this post—he made a couple of points I intended to and brought up some things I hadn’t considered. Incidentally, I’m even more eager to read his next novel now (especially if something comes from his rethinking).

I’m more than grateful for this interaction. Bob’s been reading Spenser longer than I have been reading, and you can see Parker’s influence in his work—he’s definitely worth listening to on this front. (and he’s invited to respond like this to any of my Parker-related posts, like Robert B. Parker’s Buried Secrets by Christopher Farnsworth that should’ve been up last week)


Upon Further Review . . .

My immediate reaction after reading Hot Property was that I enjoyed Mike Lupica’s second attempt at a Spenser novel a bit more than I did Broken Trust, his initial entry into the series. That being said, I did have a few nits to pick. I thought the love scenes between Spenser and Susan were somewhat truncated. (I’m a retired English teacher. I’m allowed to use words like truncated.) It felt as though Lupica didn’t quite have the same grasp of that relationship as, for instance, Ace Atkins did in his ten Spensers. I also thought that some of the interactions between Spenser and Hawk bordered on the redundant, the same sort of generic back-and-forth we’ve seen before. And I would have liked a couple more (and a little longer) scenes at Henry Cimoli’s gym. Henry is somewhat of a surrogate father figure for both Spenser and Hawk, and the affection they both feel for him (coupled with good-natured insults) is always fun to observe.

As I said, all of the above falls into the nits category, certainly nothing that would keep me from reading the book or recommending it to others. However, I had a bit more of a problem with two other parts of the book, one from a strictly objective point of view, the other admittedly entirely personal. HC stole my thunder on the former in his review when he mentioned being puzzled by the apparently close (and hitherto unknown?) relationship that Rita had with both Quirk (“. . . reached over with one of his big hands to take hold of Rita’s.”) and Belson (“Rita asked me not to tell you this . . .”). When I read those passages, I immediately wondered, when did this happen? I’ve been reading Spenser novels for fifty years now, and while it’s quite possible there have been times when Rita and Quirk, or Rita and Belson, bonded a bit, if so, it escaped my notice. On a lesser note, I thought the same thing about Vinnie when he asked Spenser, “How is she?” I don’t mean he shouldn’t care about Rita, but I think “How’s Rita?” would work better there, because I don’t recall any scenes in previous Spensers between Rita and Vinnie. Okay, maybe I dived a bit too deep into nits territory there, but I could see Vinnie asking “How is she?” about Susan much more than with Rita. In Crimson Joy (one of my least favorite Spensers), Vinnie is part of the gang that Spenser assembles to provide 24/7 protection for Susan while he tracks down a serial killer, so we know there was at least somewhat of a history there.

The personal thing? Well, I’m a writer. To date, I’ve written five mysteries about a Pittsburgh PI named Jeremy Barnes and two about a Pittsburgh police detective named Daniel Hayes. Since both JB and Daniel work in Pittsburgh (not one of your bigger cities), it figures that these two guys might connect at some point, and in fact, I’ve had each one make a quick reference to the other at least once. But I’ve never even considered the possibility of some sort of “crossover chapter” involving them, mainly because I write each character from the first-person perspective. So imagine my surprise upon seeing that Lupica has at least two occasions when Spenser and Jesse Stone have fairly long conversations. And yet . . . after rereading those chapters with, I hope, a much more objective eye, I had to admit that Lupica pulled it off. It made me rethink the possibility of a JB-Daniel meeting in the Jeremy Barnes novel I’m working on at the moment. We’ll see.

Overall, there is so much to like about Hot Property. I thought the conversations between Spenser and Susan where they discussed his relationship with Rita were very good. I especially enjoyed the scene that touched on Spenser’s thoughts on mortality. Getting some backstory on Rita was also interesting, and I wasn’t expecting Cecile (one of Hawk’s former lovers) to be back in his life. Could Lupica have something in mind there for a future book?

I still think Lupica did a better job with the Sunny Randall books than he has (so far) with Spenser, but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to snatch up that next Spenser as soon as it’s available. I am, and I hope there are more to follow.

Ashwin’s first novel is so fun and self-assured that I’m expecting that I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled for the sequel (with 23% to go, I assume there’ll be at least one sequel) and probably am going to have to hunt down some of her comics, too.

Last week, I said, “It is going to be so weird hearing the voices Toby, Tybalt, et. al. in a voice that doesn’t belong to Mary Robinette Kowal.” I underestimated just how strange it would be. I’m able to put that aside (mostly) and enjoy this.

Enger’s novel is one of the most engaging and hopeful dystopian novels I can remember reading. There’s no plucky young woman in a love triangle coming to save the world–but there might something better going on.

There are so many things that could be said about Kasher’s book that I don’t know where to start–but since this isn’t a full post about it, I can let myself off with a “it’s entertaining, educational, and will make you laugh.”

Before I say anything else, Barry has set up an Instagram page (well, probably not him, actually — he states in the book he doesn’t understand Instagram) for his dog, Lucy. You should absolutely check it out and then come back to read what I have to say about the book. Dog Pictures > my blog. Pretty near always.

With that out of the way . . . Dave Barry has been a dog person for most of his life, one of the many reasons I like him. I distinctly, and fondly, remember columns and/or references to Earnest and Zippy (the emergency backup dog) years ago. Those two make a brief appearance in this book, but they aren’t the focus. The focus (if you can’t tell from the title) is his dog, Lucy. At the time of writing, Barry and Lucy are the same age — 70 (or 7 times 10 in her case), which means that both of them have many fewer days ahead of them than behind — which sounds awfully morbid for Dave Barry to talk about, but he does so frequently and purposefully.

As they’re at similar stages in life, Barry notices a huge difference between the two — Lucy is far happier and seemingly better adjusted than he is. So he sets out to try to learn a few lessons about life from her, which he passes on to his readers. Things like Pay Attention to the People You Love; Don’t Let Your Happiness Depend on Things; and Don’t Stop Having Fun. None of these, Barry knows, are original or ground-breaking — they’re pretty much common sense. Yet, they’re the kind of common sense things that he (like many/most humans) doesn’t actually do a great job at.

The result is a mixture of a Self-Help book and a Humor book — humor about himself, his life, as well as dogs. Sometimes the swing between the two genres can be jarring, but that’s pretty rare. For the most part, he moves easily between the two, taking the readers along with him on this ride. I can’t tell you how many times I went from grinning, chuckling or laughing out loud to getting misty-eyed within a couple of pages. It seems that Barry has learned a little bit about writing over the decades.

I’ve loved Barry’s humor longer than either of us would probably care to admit. One of his strengths is finding a way to take an old joke, or at least a joke everyone’s made before — like, say, I dunno, dogs sniffing each other’s hind-quarters — and make it feel fresh and new. More importantly, funny. He’s also able to make jumps from premise to punchline that no one expects. There is, for example, a Hugh Hefner joke where one doesn’t even come close to belonging — and it works perfectly. Even knowing that, you won’t see it coming until you’re snickering at it.

As for the heart-felt material? It works pretty well, too. I don’t think anyone will walk away from this book thinking “Wow! That was insightful. I never would have thought of it on my own!” Nor do I think Barry was trying for it. But, readers will appreciate the reminders to live like Lucy (or their own dog), and the way Barry phrases things might add some freshness to the concept. Which is all anyone can really ask.

I really don’t know if this is Barry’s best — but it’s up there. The ratio of Attempted Joke to Funny Joke is pretty high, I’m not sure if I can think of a higher one in his ouvre. Lessons From Lucy is, without a doubt, his most mature, thoughtful and touching work (that’s a pretty low bar, I realize — a bar he’s worked hard to keep low, too). Couple that with me being a sucker for a Dog Book — even if it is a semi-Self Help book — and I can’t help but give it 5 Stars. This is a winner, no matter what.

What’s I Am a Big Brother About?

This book begins with the lines

Our new baby arrived today.
I’m a big brother now, horray!

Our narrator used to be a baby, but he’s bigger now. As a big brother, there are things he can do to help with the new baby like getting a clean diaper, throwing a dirty one away, helping with baths, singing lullabies, and so on (many of these things suggest this book doesn’t all take place on the first day).

He even talks about plans for the future, like playing together. Because he’s

a big brother forever!

Let’s Talk about the Art for a Minute

It is full of cuteness. Both the big brother and his young sibling are cherubic, smiling, and probably too good to be true (we don’t get to see Big Brother deal with teething or won’t-go-to-sleep baby). Church’s illustrations are exactly what you envision when you think of Picture Books, really.

How is it to Read Aloud?

It’s fine. There’s no challenging rhythm or silly rhymes. Just short, declarative sentences that model how the readers (or those being read to) should approach the office of Big Brother, which work really well. It might be a little on the dull side, really, for grown-ups to read aloud. But it moves quickly enough (and you’ll end up talking about the young sibling anyway while you go through the book).

What did the Little Critter think of It?

I’m not really sure, I haven’t been able to read it with him yet, or haven’t seen anyone else read it to him.

Hopefully, he’ll getting some of the lessons this book is trying to teach and model, because he needs to start applying them the day that this posts (whenever that is).

So, what did I think about I Am a Big Brother?

It’s short, it’s sweet, perhaps overly sweet. But if I start complaining about Picture Books being too sweet, I’m never going to finish. (and will come across more like Oscar the Grouch than I want to)

It delivers just what anyone who picks his book up should expect, and will hopefully be useful to parents wanting to distract and/or instruct a new older sibling.

Top 5 Tuesday – Top 5 authors I want to try in 2025

This week’s topic is, “Top 5 authors I want to try in 2025 Who are some new authors that you want to read from in 2025?” Which works well as a companion piece to New-to-Me Authors I Discovered in 2024 from earlier. It’s sort of future-casting half of next year’s post. One hopes. There are plenty of authors who will be new to me this year, I trust, but these are the top five I’m planning on getting to know.

1 Karl Forshaw

I first “met” Forshaw when I was trying to put together my Self-Published Authors Appreciation Week posts last year. It was a pleasure working with him, and he was very supportive and helpful. But also…his novel, Renia, looks pretty good and I’ve only heard good things about it (including from other Self-Published authors last year)

2 Adrian Gibson

Not too long ago, I seemingly couldn’t go a day without seeing something about Adrian’s first novel, Mushroom Blues, and his podcast shouldn’t be missed. Then, on a lark, I invited him to my little YouTube channel and not only was he gracious enough to show up, I had a great time with it, too.

Also, a friend read and raved about his book.

He’s a nice guy, he knows what he’s talking about, and his debut novel seems to be a winner. What’s not to look forward to?

3 Jason Pargin

I have no personal connection to this author, I’ve just been hearing great things about him for years, and really want to dive in.

4 DB Rook

I could basically repeat what I said about Forshaw here. I won’t, I’ll just point you to it and then point to his book, Callus & Crow.

5 Sadir S. Samir

I don’t have much of a connection to Samir, either. But the same friend from above raved about it, other friends and bloggers have, too–and The Crew got plenty of in my SPAAW series last year. It’s beyond time for me to try his stuff.

Top Ten Tuesday: New-to-Me Authors I Discovered in 2024


The topic for this week’s Top Ten Tuesdays is the Top Ten New-to-Me Authors I Discovered in 2024

I’ve done this (or something similar) the last few years (2019, 2021, 2022, 2023), and have come to look forward to it. It’s one more chance to talk about people I quite enjoy talking about. Hopefully, these names get to continue to pop up on this here site for years to come. One common theme I noticed through most of these–their work just made me happy, it was fun to read. Maybe the subject or their style was on the lighter side–there’s more MG/YA-ish things here than I typically list, too. I dunno, I just enjoyed getting to know these authors via their work. I’d love to interact with them, too–if any of those listed here read this and want to participate in anything with me. Please let me know.

I was going to count the co-authors as one, but I couldn’t decide between 6 or so others for the final slot, so they get counted individually, but I’ll talk about them together.

Top Ten New-to-Me Authors I Discovered in 2024

10 Robert Jackson Bennett Robert Jackson Bennett

Bennett has been one of those authors that I’ve meant to get around to since his first book was released and authors/bloggers I respect started hyping his work. There was something that kept me from taking the plunge–I’m not sure what, but I did have City of Stairs in my hands several times without plunking down ye olde debit card.

Naturally, I’m annoyed that I didn’t–but I’m more than happy that I took the plunge with this Fantasy/Mystery Hybrid. The worldbuilding is fantastic, the details he’s put into this environment, magic and science systems are amazing, and the storytelling is even better. I was just blown away with everything he put on the page.

And that’s without mentioning that The Tainted Cup is a riff on Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin. Anyone who’s going to tackle that is going to get my attention.

9 A. Y. Chan A.Y. Chan

Chan infused her debut novel with energy, enthusiasm, and a solid understanding (well-earned) of martial arts and what a young girl has to go to gain that understanding. But mostly, she wrote a fun adventure that can appeal to her target audience as well as crusty old guy like me. What’s not to like about an author who can do that?

Bill Adams Bill Adams

These two assembled a bit of MG magic as well. It would be pretty easy to tweak the voice, upgrade the danger in a couple of spots, change a chicken into something a bit more (obviously) dangerous, and leave most of the major plot points alone to bring the readers a pretty decent fantasy novel for adults. But no–they went somewhat silly and goofy, kept the chicken (thankfully), and made the whole thing an earnest and satisfying read for young and old alike. I can’t wait to see what else this pair is capable of.

6 Katie Cook Katie Cook

Cook’s art is eye-grabbing in itself. You add in her characters, charm and this story? I need nothing else.

I”m not sure what else to say. There’s an optimism, a positivity, and a sense of whimsy that poured out of this book and I’m very glad I took a chance on it.

5 Peter David Peter David

Technically, David wasn’t new-to-me this year, because he’d published under another name previously. But I challenge any one to look at the works of his alter ego and tell me that I “knew” this version of him. Also, it’s my blog so I can make up the rules.

But more importantly, David’s work belongs to that great tradition of talking to his audience in terms they might have to reach a little for and never talking down to them, despite his subject matter.  I felt like I was reading a kindred spirit (but one who can actually write).

4 Rob Hart Rob Hart

Hart is one of those authors that I’ve meant to read for ages now (okay, I checked–I put a book on a wish list back in 2016). But things happen and I just never got around to it–but his 2024 release called to me and then pressed almost all of my buttons while I was reading it. It’s one of those books that felt tailored to me. Then I read this interview with him, and everything I was thinking about him as a result of the book turned out to be right. I can see myself becoming quite familiar with his work in the years to come.

3 Cameron Johnston Cameron Johnston

The Last Shield had a perfect hook, a perfect elevator pitch, and the execution was close enough to perfect that you’d have to get a magnifying lens out to see where/if it fell short. Like with David and Hart, it’s like he was writing something for me–or for people who like all the same things as I do (and, I assume, he does). And of course, you want to read someone like that.

2 M.D. Presley M.D. Presley

Presley’s Urban Fantasy series scratched the same itch as Schultz’s Arcane Underworld and Connolly’s Twenty Palace series do–UF featuring somewhat unsavory types with chips on their shoulder and a desire to work against the system while following strong moral compasses of their own. Also, magic that doesn’t quite fit the mold of just about anything else out there. (I qualify that with “just about” so I can’t get corrected by everyone who reads this)

1 Shami Stovall Shami Stovall

Stovall’s Chronos Chronicles remind me of James J. Butcher’s work, and a little of Comby’s Vale Investigation series (I’m not sure anyone else would make the connection). Good, solid UF PI fiction with a magic system that makes sense almost immediately–and is also close to, but very distinct from, many of the standard UF systems. There’s a sense of fun to these that Butcher misses–this might be where I think of Comby–while maintaining the drama. I dunno, I just dig this stuff and I’m glad Stovall crossed my path this past year.

A Few Quick Questions With…Ed Duncan

Earlier this morning, I gave my take on Ed Duncan’s Pigeon-Blood Red (and it occurs to me that I didn’t explain that interesting title choice–one more reason for you to listen to/read it). Now I get to share a quick Q&A that Duncan was kind enough to make time for. I hope you enjoy this as I did!


Why don’t you introduce yourself to my audience, and talk about what led to you writing thrillers—has this been a plan for a while, and post-retirement you had time for it? Or is this a later-in-life choice?
I have enjoyed writing since English composition days in high school.  I always planned to write a novel when I got the chance, but I never found time until after a career of practicing law.  Along the way, in 2008 I wrote a legal treatise entitled Ohio Insurance Coverage, which I updated annually through 2012, the year I retired.

I read The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett as an adult and was so taken by it that I decided that crime fiction would be my genre.  Indeed, I still find inspiration in Hammett’s masterful dialogue, much of which is reproduced almost word for word in the last movie version of the novel written and directed by John Huston.  For example, there is this:

Spade to Wunderle:

I’m going to send you over.  The chances are you’ll get off with life.  That means you’ll be out again in twenty years.  You’re an angel.  I’ll wait for you…. If they hang you I’ll always   remember you.

 

Later he tells her:

Don’t be silly.  You’re taking the fall.  One of us has got to take it …. They’d hang me sure.  You’re likely to get a better break….

 

Still later Spade says to her:

I don’t care who loves who.  I’m not going to play the sap for you.  I won’t walk in Thursby’s and Christ knows who else’s footsteps.  You killed Miles and you’re going over for it.

 

For you –at least when it came to Pigeon-Blood Red – what came first? Rico, or one of the other characters, and you had to come up with a story to put them into; or was it a story that you needed to populate?
You have hit upon something here because the two alternatives you present are closely related.  Because the two main characters in this story come from such different worlds, and yet would be interacting together, before I could begin to write, I had to imagine a plot line in which they could believably exist and interact together.  In other words, I had to come up with a story that brought a lawyer from a big corporate law firm together with a hit man for more than a fleeting instant.  And, because I’ve written a trilogy, I had to do it three times!  I think I mostly succeeded but not with everyone.  For instance, despite giving me an overall positive review, a recent reviewer called the storyline in Pigeon-Blood Red “absurd.”  The foregoing notwithstanding, I already knew who Rico and Paul were, which is to say, what kind of man each was and what each would find that was positive about the other’s character, however reluctantly.  I just needed interesting supporting characters and an intriguing crime to bring them and everyone else together.

There are a lot of balls in the air at once here – how do you approach something like this – did you write a character/group of character’s arc at a time and then layered them together?  And was getting all the ducks to line up in a row just right enough to make you think of writing a sequel to Ohio Insurance Coverage instead?
First, there was never a possibility that I would write a sequel to Ohio Insurance Coverage.  That legal treatise and its annual supplements was a project that I happily bequeathed to another lawyer in my old law firm after I retired in 2012.  You are correct, however, that for such a slender novel, there are a lot of balls in the air.  Writing it chronologically helped me to keep each of those balls in the air.  However, I did write chapter one out of order both so that I could start the novel with a bang, so to speak, and so that I could introduce the reader to two warring sides to Rico’s complex personality: his inability to recognize his cruelty toward his own girlfriend when he believes it is required by “business” and the pleasure he gets out of turning the tables on a husband who is bullying his wife.

There were some great characters in here—and most of them weren’t who I expected to find when I started the book. What was the bigger challenge—getting these people to live and breathe in a way that was satisfying to you (and the reader) or getting the action/plot just right?
Again, both challenges were related and almost equally formidable.  I needed to construct a story that was dramatic and exciting and yet believable.  While in general that is the challenge of almost any writer of fiction, and in particular it is the challenge of any writer of crime novels, the task is made more difficult if the story is implausible.  So, while it was a close call, getting the action/plot right was more of a challenge.

What lessons were you able to take from finishing Pigeon-Blood Red to make The Last Straw  easier—or was it such a different animal that you were back to Square One?
There is a famous writer’s quote that is often attributed to Ernest Hemingway but whose author is probably unknown.  I learned how true the quote was when I wrote Pigeon-Blood Red and it was no less true when I wrote the other novels in my trilogy.  Thus, it is the lesson I was able to take from finishing each novel.  Unfortunately, it did not make writing either the second or the third novel easier.  Here is the quote: “Writing is easy.  All you have to do is sit down in front of a blank sheet of paper and open a vein.”

Who are some of your major influences? (whether or not you think those influences can be seen in your work — you know they’re there)
I think Dashiell Hammett and Lee Child are my major influences.  Others include Walter Mosley and Frederick Forsythe.

Is there a genre that you particularly enjoy reading, but could never write? Or are you primarily a mystery/suspense/thriller reader?
Duke Ellington once said, “There are only two kinds of music:  good music and bad music.”*  I feel the same way about writing.  Therefore, I enjoy reading in every genre, but I particularly enjoy histories of the Civil War and its Generals, histories of World War II, biographies, and literary fiction.  I may take a crack at literary fiction one day, but I could never write in any of the other genres.

* I thought it was Country and Western. Guess you learn something every day.

What’s next for Ed Duncan, author?
I would like to write a fourth installment in the adventures of Rico and Paul and Jean and Evelyn.  Then I would like to write that literary novel.  I hope I get to both.

A Quick Word

You should’ve read this in early November. But communication errors, busy schedules, and (I’m assuming) life in general got in the way of both Mr. Duncan and myself. And I feel bad about my part in that. Thought I’d take a moment up front to issue an apology to Mr. Duncan and his publicist.

What’s Pigeon-Blood Red About?

Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but a grizzled enforcer and his partner make a mistake that leads to a panicky guy stealing from their boss. This guy, Robert, is already in some serious debt to their boss, Litvak, and this just makes it worse—especially when Robert leaves town suddenly and tries to use the theft to leverage Litvak into writing off the debt. Litvak doesn’t like this idea, and sends the enforcer, Rico, to track down Robert, deal out some punishment, and come back with at least the stolen item—and maybe more.

Yeah, this feels incredibly familiar—which is not a deal-breaker at all, it just makes it easy for the reader/listener to get into the story. As always, it’s what the author does with a familiar set-up that makes it worth the ride. And Duncan doesn’t disappoint there.

That largely has to do with other people that Rico and Robert encounter along the way—some of whom get swept up in Rober’s foolhardy and desperate moves and find themselves in Rico’s cross-hairs when they’re just trying to live their lives. But you should learn about them for yourselves.

Some of These People are the Worst

Seriously, you can hear Jean-Ralphio singing it as you think of some of these people. I’m not even talking about the hitman here—but some of his targets. Okay, his boss isn’t that great, either. But he’s supposed to be a morally bankrupt scoundrel. The more we get to know—and the more we see from—Robert and some others and you can’t help but wonder if the world will be a better place without them.

I will say that it took me a little longer to warm up to Rico than is usual in this type of book. Our introduction to the character—the first real thing we see from him—really made it hard for me to want anything more than to see Litvak put him in a hole somewhere, but that changed.

How Was the Narration?

My initial reaction to the thought was “absolutely fine,” and I was prepared to move on. However brief that answer was.

But Keyser deserves a little more than that, I think. He really was a great match for this material—I wish I could find other audiobook credits for him to see how he does with other genres (and am a little discouraged to see that he’s not attached to the rest of this trilogy). He could handle the lighter moments–the sweet moments–as well as the not-even-close-to-sweet moments when bullets are flying equally well (and we’ve all heard narrators that can’t quite pull that off in the same book).

I really enjoyed his work and think he made a series of really smart choices and executed them well.

So, what did I think about Pigeon-Blood Red?

After various and sundry delays, it was hard for me to remember some details that I wanted to, so I listened to a few bits again—and I really had a hard time forcing myself not to just listen to the whole book again (if I had one more day on a Libby book, I probably would’ve indulged myself). I think that says plenty about this book.

Duncan assembled this particular book very well, there were a lot of moving pieces—and plenty of backstories to bring in—and he managed to keep the reader engaged with all the characters while maintaining the pace and building the tension. I really admired that–in a longer book that might have been easier, actually, but this is a quick listen and to cram as much in as he does is no mean feat (and it never feels crowded, crammed, or rushed).

There’s a scene that I’ve spent some time thinking about again and again since I listened to this–it’s a pivotal scene toward the end. It could be a scene from a farce—it’s full of mistaken identities, close calls, crazy chains of events, and so on. You add a jaunty, bouncy soundtrack and an exaggerated facial expression or two, and it could be seen as comical. If you ignore the blood, terror, and death, that is. I could see it all very clearly in my mind, and I think Duncan faked me out a little bit (see: mistaken identities). Duncan and Keyser both were spot-on during this scene/sequence and earned a lot of trust from me there.

I found something to like in all the primary characters, (other than Robert and unnamed persons from the above section), and got invested in the outcomes surrounding them. By the end of the book, I wasn’t actually sure what character(s) the trilogy would follow and could see myself signing on to whatever ones Duncan stuck with. I was pretty sure it’d be Rico—and the title of the third book, Rico Stays gives it away. But that I’d have been open to some others, I think tells you a lot.

Was this a book that ever really blew me away? I don’t think so—but I was engaged and entertained through it all. It was entirely satisfying (if you ignore the bump with Rico in the beginning, but I got over it). And now that I’ve finished this post, I can get to listen to the rest of the trilogy in short order. Be prepared to sign on to a trilogy if you start this (a quick-moving trilogy, I should stress).

What’s Broken Bonds About?

This is a work of historical fiction focusing on April 1524-January 1525, at what will prove to be a significant period in the German Reformation. The narrative focuses on three men: Desiderius Erasmus, probably the greatest scholar of the era, and a would-be reformer of the Church; Martin Luther, the Reformer (who went further than Erasmus would’ve), and Philipp Melanchthon, a promising young scholar with ties to them both.

The book follows their connections and interactions with each other—as theoretical as some of them might be—as leaders put pressure on all three to sway them one way or the other, to pick up their pen (or lay it down) for an end, to cease their efforts to reform the Church, to increase their efforts to reform the Church (in ways they cannot agree with), and so on.

Martin Luther

Luther is the most well-known of the trio today, for good reason. In this novel we see Luther trying to reason with his former friend Karlstadt as the latter continues to cause trouble for Luther and everyone in their area. Luther is also trying to get more compensation for and more opportunities to teach and write for Melanchthon—for the sake of the young man’s family and the University of Wittenberg, who could use him.

He’s also dealing with some personal issues—how far does he go himself? Does he give up the monastic robe for that of an academic? It’s so much of his identity, he still holds the vows he swore before him, it cost Luther so much personally to follow this path—and despite the upheaval in his life, is he prepared to lay it all aside? This was so excellently done.

We get some glimpses of some of Luther’s multiple medical issues, a little bit of his humor, and a delightful relationship with and interaction with his goddaughter, too. Mantravadi is careful to present us with a human Luther, not some superhero.

Looming over all that Luther does here is an impending intellectual showdown with the one man he’s not sure he wants to debate with, but is steeling himself to lock horns with:

Desiderius Erasmus

Before Luther burst on the stage, it was easy to think of Erasmus as the greatest Christian thinker, writer, and scholar of his time. Erasmus did try to push for some institutional reforms and had many of the same aims as Luther, but he went about things in a less inflammatory way.

He’s been dodging requests and pleas to interact with Luther for quite some time now—but the pressure is mounting and he’s not certain he can do so much longer. Reluctantly, he picks up his pen to compose On Free Will to directly counter some of Luther’s teachings.

We get a very sympathetic view of Erasmus and his interactions with friends and Protestants he interacts with daily. His health struggles are different than Luther’s but painted just as vividly here. One bout of kidney stones, in particular, almost triggered flashbacks to my last one. I found myself really liking Erasmus and pulling for him.

One of Erasmus’ greatest goals—to chill the Lutheran movement, to further promote diverse ideas in the Academy/Church, and to hand off his work to a brilliant scholar—is to get Melanchthon to come to work with him, and essentially assume his mantle when he’s gone.

Philipp Melanchthon

Melanchthon is a struggling academic, just trying to make enough money to provide for his wife and daughter. He loves to be in the classroom (and it shows), but he’s equally open to teaching in other places, too. He sides with Luther, just not as vociferously as some may want—but Luther appears to trust him.

Melanchthon is tempted to take Erasmus’ offer—it’s a dream situation for him, it’s exactly what he wants. But he’s afraid that he’d have to water down or abandon his Protestant convictions and he’s not ready to do that.

His depiction is easily the most relatable, the most appealing—between the way other characters (particularly Erasmus and Luther) talk about him and the way that Mantravadi shows him, you could make the argument that the others are supporting characters in a novel where the young man is the protagonist.

He does frequently seem too much like a 21st-century man rather than one from the 16th. Particularly when it comes to talking about his wife and daughter. But maybe that’s just me. I really liked it, so I don’t care. Hopefully, it’s close to the truth.

The last thing I want to say about Melanchthon is that there’s a scene with a bunch of students for a sort of study club (best way I can summarize it). It is one of my favorite fictional depictions of a teacher and a group of students since John Keating and that ill-fated group at Welton Academy. I don’t want to give you details, but more than I want his family life to be the way that Mantravadi depicts it, I want this to be true.

The S-Word

So, a lot of the subjects of this book—particularly when it comes to health, but even beyond it—are what some would call “earthy.” It wasn’t a pleasant time to live in many ways, particularly digestive. Anyone who’s read much of Luther’s daily life, humor, or personal history well knows that he can be somewhat scatological. The working of his bowels is a frequent topic for him.

Erasmus isn’t much different. Melanchthon, thankfully, is—but not the people he spends time with.

It’s likely not enough to put anyone off—if anything, it might recruit some younger readers 🙂 But Mantravadi has her characters use vocabulary that Christians in the 16th Century would for these processes and products, even if most 20th/21st Christians would hesitate to use it. Just a word of warning for those who might be put off.

So, what did I think about Broken Bonds?

I went into this with some hesitation—the last two fictional works I read about this time period put me off in a serious way. (one was pre-blog, so I can’t point you at anything I wrote, and I don’t feel like picking on the other again). But I know that Mantravadi has a good reputation among some Church Historians—and even heard her interviewed by one a few years ago, so I felt safe.

I’m so glad that I did—these characters came alive to me in a way that two of them haven’t before (even if I think she handled Luther with kid gloves). She used their positions, arguments—sometimes even words—well in the progress of the novel. There are plenty of footnotes for those who want to dive more into their works. Which is always a bonus in this kind of work (also, footnotes—not endnotes).

The historical detail is there, but not so much of it that you get bogged down in it—the pacing keeps moving at a good clip throughout. Are some of these events overly-dramatized? Quite possibly. Are some of these under-dramatized? Equally possible. It is, in the end, a work of fiction and that needs to be remembered.

It’s a fast-paced read for something in this genre, it’s sympathetic to all its protagonists (even when they’re at odds), there’s good tension—even when it comes to talking about academic pursuits (not the easiest thing to dramatize), and there’s a heart and warmth to it all.

I think this would work for middle school-aged readers, and for most adults, too. You might even learn a little about history and theology while you’re at it. It’s definitely worth the investment of time. I’m more than ready for the second in this duology.
