What’s Far from the Tree About?

I’ve tried several times to try to come up with a summary, and I just can’t without ruining something. So, let’s just appropriate the Publisher’s Summary, shall we?

Brendan Foley has worked to balance the responsibilities of a demanding job and a troublesome family. He’s managed to keep these two worlds separate, until the discovery of a mass grave sends them into a headlong collision. When one of the dead turns out to be a familiar face, he’s taken off the case.

Iona Madison keeps everything under control. She works hard as a detective sergeant and trains harder as a boxer. But when her superior, DI Foley, is removed from the case, her certainties are tested like never before.

With stories of the Warrington 27 plastered over the news, they set out to solve the crime before anyone else. The local constabulary is small and under-funded – Brendan knows they can’t crack this case alone, and he’s not letting a rival force take over. Not with the secrets he fears are lurking. Their investigations lead them into the murky underworlds of Manchester and Liverpool, where one more murder means little to drug-dealing gangs, desperate to control their power bases.

But as Madison steps into the ring for the fight of her life, the criminals come to them. It’s no coincidence that the corpses have been buried in Foley’s hometown. The question is, why? Foley might not like the answer….

Is There Anything I can Add to That?

Foley’s family is messed up, and he doesn’t do a lot to improve things (actually for most of this book he seems to be making it worse—while trying to help, I should add in his defense). Typically, the families of fictional police are either near-picture perfect or are pretty dysfunctional. Parker starts off making you think it’ll be the former, and then he changes course and leaves dysfunctional in the dust. Still, Foley comes across as the kind of cop you want to read about, the kind that you like to think you can find in police forces all over the world—sure, he needs some marriage counseling and needs to do some serious work when it comes to his kids. But who doesn’t have problems?

Madison’s boxing (and what drives her to it) is a great touch. It’s such a different character choice, and it really works. It gives her the right mix of self-destructive impulses, aggression, and self-discipline. On-duty, Madison’s just as interesting—seeing her torn between loyalty to Foley, devotion to duty, and wanting to solve the crime. She’s a great character, and I really hope that she plays a large role in the next two books.

What About the Narration?

This was an Audible Original, so the Audiobook experience is a big part of it. Brown was a great choice of narrator—he’s the perfect voice for this material. He captured and shaped the tone as he needed to, and gave the right performances for each character.

I can’t help feeling like I need to say more, but I just don’t know what else to say. If I had problems with the performance, I’d probably be able to go on longer, but when a narrator gets it right, like Brown does here, what else is there to say?

So, what did I think about Far from the Tree?

This was just brutal—and I mean that in the best possible way, because I can’t imagine that Parker and Brown were going for anything else. Every time—and I don’t think I’m exaggerating here—that I thought I knew where the story was going, what Parker was trying to do with one of the characters (except maybe Madison), what surprises he had up his sleeve, I was just minutes away from being proven wrong.

It was shocking—repeatedly—it was the textbook definition of gripping, unrelentingly so. Get your hands and ears on this one.

This time he runs afoul of a Chinese criminal organization at Wimbledon before he’s loaned out to the CIA who really needs a teen to sell a couple of agents as a family unit, out for vacation near the Caribbean. They’re actually hunting for a nuclear weapon and some ex-Soviets wishing for a comeback for the USSR.

I honestly found his antics around Wimbledon and that more interesting than the main story, but it wasn’t bad. Silly fun stuff that undoubtedly works better for the target audience (MG readers of a decade ago) than me, but it’s good enough for me to keep going.

Hayes is really getting better at bringing books together as a novel. Still, it’s basically four serialized short stories pretending to be a novel, but this one was a whole lot closer to being a whole.

While Krystal is off doing something to get her released from her prior engagement (Fae contracts aren’t that easy to break), Fred gets a visit from the ruling Council for vampires to see if he and his clan are up to snuff. While they’re at it, their representative is going to fill Fred in on all the stuff he should’ve learned from his sire.

Stuff ensues. Fred learns a lot but doesn’t change fundamentally. He’s still the same mild-mannered guy, even if he’s determined he’s going to have to be a bit more. There’s some really good stuff about his ex-employee, Alfred, coming into his own.

This light UF series keeps getting better.

What did I say about Dark Jenny the first time I read it?

I have only the vaguest of memory of what actually happened in the first Eddie LaCrosse novel (The Sword-Edged Blonde), and only somewhat better recall about the second (Burn Me Deadly). That’s a reflection on the amount of stuff I’ve read in that time, and is in no way a reflection on Bledsoe. I do have a very clear recollection about what both books told me about Alex Bledsoe’s talent and that I enjoyed them a lot. I’m equally certain that Dark Jenny won’t suffer from that same fading from memory/excuse to reread them. This one is gonna stay with me for a while.

Essentially, this book is a variation of an Arthurian story—ideal king, queen rumored to be less than ideal, noble knight corps with a few rotten apples thrown in, a wizard figure, wicked half-sister, and a whole lotta intrigue—with a few unique twists of Bledsoe’s own thrown in for good measure. Not a sour note to be found here—some notes that were hard to listen to, sure, but…okay, there’s a metaphor that went awry. I was trying to say that yes, there were things that were less pleasant than others—this book goes to some dark, nasty places–but it all worked well.

We get this Arthurian tale via an extended flashback—in the middle of a nasty winter storm, with nothing else to occupy the attention of his neighbors, Eddie receives an interesting package. One so interesting, there has to be a great tale that goes along with it—which he ends up telling to the crowd at his favorite tavern (with only the tiniest of breaks to remind us that this is all in Eddie’s past). By making this all an extended flashback, Bledsoe is able to give us a slightly different version of Eddie—one on the way to being the guy we’ve seen in the last two books. It also gives him the excuse to have a great femme fatale to grab Eddie’s attention without having to write around his lovely lady.

A great, riveting fantasy noir. Can’t wait for the next one already. A decent jumping on point for those new to the series, and a great third installment for those who’ve been around for awhile.

Thoughts this time through

In the nine years or so since I read Dark Jenny I held on to a vague recollection of the plot, I remembered it was a clever twist on an Authurian Legend, and that it knocked me for a loop. But that’s really all I remembered.

So when I started it on my Eddie LaCrosse re-listen, I was excited. And spent a lot of time pretty disappointed. I couldn’t see why it knocked me for a loop.

It was a very clever way to tell an Authurian story while critiquing the Authorian stories. Bledsoe got the best of both worlds there, he got the utopia, the glory, the all the trappings. And he got to show the inherent problems with them, how short lived the utopia was (and if that’s the case, just how “eu” was the topia?)

And it was a fun story about a younger Eddie LaCrosse, sword jockey at large. I wasn’t blown away, but I was having a good time.

And then I got to the part that I must’ve been thinking about when I wrote my original post about it years ago. It’s not long after we learn why the book is called Dark Jenny, if you’re curious. And then I remembered exactly what I felt in 2011 and why the impression lingered even if the details had faded.

What about Dark Jenny as an audiobook?

Once again, Stefan Rudnicki, isn’t who I’d have guessed was a good fit for LaCrosse. But I’d have been wrong, he’s a great voice for this series and I can’t imagine anyone else doing it now. I can’t put my finger on why, but I think this novel works better in print than in audio (which is not a reflection on Rudnicki, it’s something about the story)—but I have no complaints about this as an audiobook.

So, what did I think about Dark Jenny?

I guess I kind of gave it away earlier. At this point in the series, Bledsoe has locked it in. He knows who Eddie is and how to tell his stories. There’s the right mix of fantasy elements (including the Arthurian material) and hard-boiled PI elements; humor and grit; violence and sympathy.

I don’t know if this is that much better than it’s predecessors—but it is somewhat, at least. And it resonates on an emotional level for me far more than they did. I’m completely sold on it.

What’s Grit About?

I’m afraid I’d get lost in minuate or that I’d overcorrect and not give an adequate idea if I tried to give a thumbnail, so let me borrow from Duckworth’s website:

How about the narration?

I thought Duckworth herself was a great choice for narrators—she gives an energetic reading, that feels all the more authentic because it’s based on her research and experiences*. She talks at one point about the work she put in to make her TED Talk more successful and probably carried over that work to this. In the end, it was one of the more compelling non-fiction narrations I can remember.

* Not that another narrator would’ve felt inauthentic…

So, what did I think about Grit?

I loved this—I was entertained, educated, and a little inspired. The subject was interesting, the approach challenging, and didn’t always give the answers you expected. Duckworth made it clear that with the right mindset and time, it was possible to increase your own grit and find a measure of success. It’s not a one-size-fits-all solution, nor is it a promise of instant success. Just a reassurance that smart work can pay off.

I couldn’t stop thinking of different friends/family members that I wanted to share insights from this with—I think one son, in particular, should be very happy that he was busy with school while I was listening to this so I didn’t force him to listen along (it probably would have done him some good, but he probably wouldn’t have appreciated it in the moment).

The associated PDF was a nice supplement to the audiobook (so I can see charts/graphs and whatnot). Still, I think I’m going to have to get a hold of the hard copy for easy reference (it’s just easier to flip through to find something, or to use the index, than skipping through an audio file) and probably give out a copy or three.

What’s The Answer Is . . .: Reflections on My Life About?

Trebek starts off talking about why he wrote the book at this time, how it’s not an exhaustive autobiography, and really too brief to be a memoir, instead, it’s some sort of French term that I didn’t catch—little vignettes about his life, some brief stories or impressions of a time/place, some are longer reflections about something.

He talks about his childhood, his parents, his education (including feuds with particular teachers—including a petty-sounding beef with a priest he in prep school that he hasn’t totally gotten past), his early days in TV in Canada, moving to the US, and starting on Jeopardy!. He even talks a bit about the impressions that Eugene Levy and Will Ferrell did of him. Beyond that, Trebek discusses the charity works he does, his family, and, of course, his cancer.

He talks a little about American culture and the state of the nation right now (exacerbated by COVID-19), and gets a little more political than we’re used to him being (more political than I think he’s used to being). While I think if he got more detailed and in-depth with his analysis, I’d probably differ with him on the details—but he didn’t, so I could only nod along with him. We need a few million more people saying what he said (and living the way he seems to).

You get a little bit of everything—some is lighthearted, some is heavier, a lot just comes across as a humble and grateful older man reminiscing. Which is exactly what this is.

A Little About the Narration

Ken Jennings was a great choice for narrator—it’s hard to think of either of them without thinking of the other (well, since 2004, anyway). He sounds like a natural doing this and I’d enjoy listening to him narrate other audiobooks (he did the audiobook for his own, Planet Funny, and I bet it sounds pretty good).

But Trebek read a few chapters himself—the one about why he swears so often (it surprised me, too), the one talking about notable Jeopardy! contestants (like Jennings), the one about his wife (Trebek didn’t like the idea of someone else talking about his wife that way), and the last chapter, where he discussed his cancer and coming to terms with his impending death. I understand why he couldn’t do the entire book himself, but I’d have preferred it (nothing against Jennings—I’d have been content with Jennings doing the whole thing). But I’m so glad he did those chapters, you could hear the sincerity in his praise for Jennings, Eddie Timanus, Cindy Stowell, and others; his love for his wife; and the resolution and contemplation he’d put into his final days (hopefully there are many more of them).

I’m still tempted to grab a copy of the hardcover, just so I can see the pictures. But, I’m so glad I got to hear parts of this in Trebek’s own voice.

So, what did I think about The Answer Is . . .: Reflections on My Life?

You can argue that my evaluation of this book is all about sentiment, fanboy-ness, and is devoid of any sense of judging the skill of writing, the depth of insight, or anything like that. I won’t disagree. Trebek’s been a fixture in my life/consciousness for longer than I can really remember. Every time I’ve heard/seen an interview with him (which, admittedly, isn’t often), I’ve been more and more impressed with him. I won’t say he’s a hero/role model or anything, but I admire the guy, respect his work ethic and attitude. I’ve got his Funko Pop figure in my cubicle at work. He’s just…well, like a said, a fixture. So listening to stories about his life tapped into that sector of my subconscious that’s been labeled “Alex Trebek” since I was a pre-teen and he started on Jeopardy!.

This book would’ve had to have been really bad for me not to love it. Thankfully, it wasn’t.

And if you can hear him talk about his wife, his children, his cancer—and the effect that the cancer’s having on his wife and children as he prepares for death without being moved? There’s something wrong with ya. At that point, any thought I had about pretending to be objective and analytical went out the window.

My sole complaint is that it’s four-and-a-half hours long. It’s just not long enough. I get that he wasn’t trying to be exhaustive—and I don’t necessarily want that—but when you start to hear these quick stories about his growing up, his getting established in the business (either in Canada or the States), his friendships…and of course, Jeopardy!—you just want it to keep going for hours and hours. So I dinged it half a star (but it deserves all 5).

I loved this book, I laughed, I was surprised, I chuckled, I learned a little, I got choked up. Can’t ask for much more.

I won’t deny that there were a couple of moments that had me on the edge of my seat, but overall this concluding novel felt like a letdown. There was just a lot of treading water going on, the plot just wouldn’t move for ages, it seemed.

An audiobook narrated by Emily Gray Unabridged Audiobooks a multitude of shortcomings, however. She’s just so much fun to listen to.

I’m glad I listened to this series, but I’m also glad that I’m done. It started strong, but over the course of the series, it kept getting weaker and weaker. A fun mash-up of Urban Fantasy and Victorian Steampunk, but ultimately unsatisfying.

Alex Rider is back with another dose of escapist spy fiction for the MG set. It’s fun, but disposable. It’s the audiobook equivalent of NCIS, an entertaining way to spend some time, but that’s about it. I liked what Horowitz did with his character and I appreciated the growth in Alex.

This time, Alex is sent to an exclusive private school in the guise of a child of a rich and powerful man. Two similar fathers, from different parts of the world, with sons at this school, had recently been assassinated and M16 wants to get to the bottom of it.

Prebble did a fine job with the narration, I hope he continues.

This was clever and pretty exciting, I hope the series continues in this veinI can absolutely see why my son tore through them (and re-read them, probably the only things he re-read). I’ll be back for more (just wish I’d made myself do this back when he was reading them).

My chief complaint about Duhigg’s book, The Power of Habit, was that I expected something the reader could use for themselves. This isn’t as easy to apply as you might want, but it’s clearly written with an eye for the reader not just to understand the principles of efficiency and productivity, but to show some ways to bring the lessons home.

That said, it’s not a how-to book, it’s not self-improvement, it’s largely about the science/study/understanding of productivity. I found it just as fascinating as the last book, and can see where it’d be a useful guidebook for people in some sort of position of authority in an organization.

Duhigg also shows us his process while illustrating his own application of the book’s lessonswhich I really enjoyed.

I’m absolutely on board for whatever book Duhigg puts out next, Chamberlain is a great narrator for his material, too.

The narrator? This Meryl Streep person? I tell you what, I think she’s going placesthere’s something special about her performance. Seriously, she did a great job, no surprise there.

Nor is it a surprise that Ephron can write a clever little book. I’m a long-time fan, I knew I should’ve picked this up when it was released. I don’t know that it’s necessarily deep, or that you walk away with new insight into the human condition, marriage, or love. But it was funny, it felt honest and real, and you get caught up in the life of Rachel Samstat right away. Solidly entertaining.

So this is all about chickens coming home to roostalmost everything that happened in this novel ties into one or more of the previous novels. And never the fun stuff from those novels. There’s the marital issues we got a glimpse at since Day 1 (and getting worse all the timeespecially in the last book), the dead former Sheriff, the new Sheriff and his issues with Joe, Joe’s new bossand more that I will just gloss over and let you read.

There’s a truly disturbing secret unearthed that really sheds light on so much of what happened in the book, most authors would’ve spent a lot more time on it than Box did here, he just let it be something that happened on the way to the major showdown. I like that he did it, but also kind of wish he’d given us a little more about it.

I did like the new governor and hope we get to see him again. (I especially like the fact that he’s a fictional politician and governs a neighboring state, not my own, I don’t even think I could enjoy him as a fictional Idaho governor).

There’s a lot left hanging at the close of this novel, I know the series continues (for many, many books to come), but I really have no idea what it’ll look like when I come back for Free Fire. Joe will be different, too, no matter what the circumstances around him are like. I assume Box is going to address it and I’m very curious about it.

I really didn’t need this book, Leigh Bardugo’s YA retelling of Wonder Woman’s origin was good enough, and superior to this one. But I’d read some largely positive reviews and decided to give it a shot.

It felt less like a Wonder Woman story, and more like Anderson wanted to find a way to talk about certain issues and shoved Diana into the necessary circumstances and then shaped the character around that, rather than making it feel organic and earned. Also, there was too much left unexplained. There was so much I didn’t understand about what was going on with Diana on the Themyscira and physically that it felt more like Anderson dropped the ball and less like she was being understated.

It wasn’t bad, but it sure wasn’t good.

So Cassie travels to the very small town in northern Montana where the crime took place and the client’s estranged family runs everything from their ranch to the school board and all things in betweenincluding the Sheriff’s Office and Courts. Things do not go well for her and her investigationwhich just makes her think there’s something for her to find to help the client after all.

I definitely listened to this too soon after In Plain Sight, one of the themes of it is repeated herenot something I’d have noticed (at least not as much) if a few more weeks had passed.

Box ultimately won me over, but I came close to DNFing this a time or two, and I really didn’t enjoy most of the book. It was just a little heavy-handed, and the tie-in to a prior nemesis really didn’t work for me at all (and I’m not sure the introduction of the tie-in works now that I’ve seen where Box was taking itit’s too complicated to explain, especially for this post, let’s just say I didn’t like it). But by the end, I liked what Cassie got up to and how she handled herselfand I like the way that Box dealt with the climax and denouementboth were really strong (and semi-unexpected).

…this was, when you thought about it, typical of the places that Smith brought you to, of the situations that you could find yourselves in when working with him…He had these ideas which somehow seemed to be more than hunches and a way of making things happen before you realized it. Half suggestions would have momentum before you could blink.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll keep saying it until it’s no longer true* but there’s a certain magic, an ineffable alchemy about Jackson narrating Grainger’s work. It’s just fantastic, I think I’d have liked these audiobooks with another narrator (or in print), but I don’t think I’d have liked them as much. I’ve enjoyed Jackson’s narration before, but it was (no offense intended) good, not great. But you put the two of them together? It’s fantastic.

* I expect that will be roughly the time that one of them retires.

The downside here is, that I don’t have a lot to say beyond that. And it kind of drives me crazy. I made a couple of notes, but I’ve misplaced them (which is pretty annoying).

What’s Luck and Judgement About?

We start off with Smith and Waters taking a helicopter to an oil rig with some other police to investigate a death/missing person (the helicopter rides inject a much-needed bit of levity to keep the beginning of this novel from being too dark). Smith and Waters are really along for the ride, most of the work will be done by the others, but the victim was in Smith’s jurisdiction—as it the rig. Or close enough, so they have to come along.

The higher-ups and the executives on the rig are willing to write it up as a suicide, but are leaning on an unfortunate accident as the explanation. Smith, shockingly, isn’t convinced. Suicide seems unlikely for several reasons, and one would have to work really hard to get around all the safety measures, guard rails, fences, gates, and whatnot in order to have an unfortunate accident. It makes him no friends, but Smith is convinced (and is more so by the hour) that this is a homicide.

As bad as it is for the victim, their suffering is over—but for their survivors, the crime (if there was one) will affect their lives for years to come. In this case, we’re talking about his wife and a small child. They didn’t have a lot of money coming in before his death, but now, there’s nothing. A small apartment, little financial security, and nothing else. Without becoming maudlin, or focusing on them too much, Grainger does allow us to see how these events will alter their lives and what the future may hold for them. We got a little bit of that in the previous novels, but it plays a larger role this time. It’s a small thing, but one that’s too often over-looked in Crime Fiction.

There’s a new detective on the team, a transfer, and one that Smith has a hard time relating to—he’s trying to be cautious and make sure she’s acclimating. At the same time, he’s worried that he’s not using her, and that the best way to get her acclimated is to throw her in. With the rest of the detectives (including those he doesn’t appreciate), you don’t see him uncertain or reflective. So watching Smith trying to figure out how to manage someone is a new side to him.

That same detective plays a role in an undercover operation that Smith undertakes to follow a lead—it’s possibly the most comedic part of the series to date—while not really being that funny at all. Judge for yourself.

As much as Smith’s hunches, his intuition, might start his team down a road, or help him to see a connection that others miss, once he makes that intuitive leap to start an investigation, procedure takes over. I can’t think of another “police procedural” where the procedure is as effective as it is in these books. Smith and the team (mostly the team) grind and grind and grind, doggedly going through all the steps before them, and it pays off—at least to a degree. I really respect that as a narrative choice—sure, Smith’s (or someone else’s) intuition (experience guided by intelligence, as Nero Wolfe would put it) will sometimes help set the direction, but it’s legwork that gets it done.

What’s Going On Other than the Main Case?

Smith continues to work with the True Crime writer on that previous case of his, and a friendship develops between the two As an ongoing arc, this is a real slow burn, and I’m enjoying it, as much as I don’t understand what Grainger is up to. I’m assuming instead of a B (or C) story, this will eventually become the A story for a novel—maybe the last in the series? But unless this is just going to demonstrate that Smith’s biggest case ever was his biggest failure and he’s going to have to find the real killer now, I’m not sure I see how.*

* Okay, I just came up with a half-baked idea where it would work, but I’ll hold off on that idea until it can get solidified.

Lastly, it’s time for Smith to be recertified as physically fit to carry on his duties. He’s missed two previous opportunities to qualify and he has no choice but to show up for this one. It feels pretty personal, the DCI who’s had it in for him since before the series started seems to be using this to force him out. The reasons he missed the previous two are legitimate reasons, and the DCI just looks petty for forcing his hand like this. But then when doesn’t this guy look petty? In the last book, he tried to get Smith to transfer to another office, and that didn’t work, so this is his new attempt. It’s short-sighted and small-minded to force Smith out, but the dies have been cast. While the new assignment was being dangled in front of Smith, a private-sector job was also offered—the lengths (the questionable, reckless, and likely illegal) that Smith goes go to pass this test demonstrates how un-tempting he actually found the offers last time, no matter what he may have thought. Smith loves this kind of police work and will have to be forced into retirement, kicking and screaming.

So, what did I think about Luck and Judgement?

So much for the three paragraphs that I was hoping to come up with for this post, I guess, eh?

I pretty much gave that away in my first paragraph, didn’t I? There is something about the combination of Grainger’s novels and Jackson’s performance that make these books so satisfying. Are they the best written, most exciting and suspenseful Police Procedurals? No. But they are just about the most satisfying, most immersive, most effective that I can think of—even when the ending isn’t what you’d want. There is a strong sense of humanity in these books, not just in the protagonists, but in the victim, the killer, the witnesses, the people who aren’t the killer but who aren’t up to anything legal/moral/ethical…everyone. There’s no one cartoon-y or over the top (in any direction). You just don’t see enough of that.

I was sucked into the intricacies of this case and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with Smith and the rest of the team—and I can’t wait to return to this world.

I really don’t know what to say about this account of a forensic pathologist’s training in NYC. Read it, listen to it, whatever. It’s fascinating. It’s a good reminder/way to learn that not all of forensic pathology is what you see on police procedurals (and even then…wow, fictionalized).

Her retelling of the reasons she left her surgical residency—and the fact that she’s not the exception to the rule (beyond having the good sense to leave when so many don’t), is one more reminder that we desperately need to overhaul medical training in this country.

But that’s not what the book is about—it’s about the day-to-day grind, the countless ways pathologists find evidence about what kills us, the hard job of getting answers for the bereaved, and yeah—there’s the criminal justice side to it. I’m a little squeamish when it comes to real-life medical “stuff”, I’ll watch a Tarantino marathon and not blink and the bucks of blood (well, maybe the dance scene in Reservoir Dogs some days), but I can’t last 15 minutes in a medical documentary without my toes literally curling. There were moments listening to this that made me wonder—but there weren’t many, and they passed quickly. If you’re like me, stick with it.

I was all set to say this is a good book and well worth your time, and then we got to the penultimate chapter. Melinek wisely organized her story by topic, not chronology. Largely due to this chapter (I’d guess), because you want it at the end so it doesn’t dwarf the rest. She started her residency a few weeks before September 11, 2001. I’m not even going to try to describe it. The whole book could’ve been written about this and the immediate aftermath.

Of all the books in this post, this is the one that bugs me the most—but I’m being honest, I’m not going to find the time to give this the post I want to. Like his fellow Wyomingite (I had to look that term up), Walt Longmire, Joe Pickett has to leave his home occasionally. There’s just no way Box can keep killing people in that sparsely populated area.

So Joe goes to Jackson Hole to temporarily fill the office of a warden who killed himself—and, maybe, just figure out what drove the man to suicide*. Seeing Joe out of water, yet right at home in the work is great—I’m betting Box will do things like this in the future (again, see Longmire), and it’ll be worth it.

* Spoiler: he does.

Joe leaves Marybeth and the kids at home, with the usual financial woes, stresses of a pre-teen far too wise for her years (but with all the attitude of a preteen), and new loneliness. This marriage is headed for trouble—thankfully, both of them realize it (I’m not sure I can handle them splitting, and I’m not a die-hard Pickett fan yet).

Great mystery. Better sub-stories (I can’t start talking about the Nate Romanowski story without spoiling it). I’m really, really glad I started this series.

Fred’s move to become a freelance accounting consultant for The Agency really just opens the door for more adventures (as well as for more challenging accounting jobs). It frequently looks like he bit off more than he can chew, but with a little help from his friends… Fred’s also dealing with the ramifications of starting his own clan in the last book—a move I thought was inspired and I’m enjoying watching that clan solidify.

This is probably the best of the series, really. Hayes makes some bold moves here. Heyborne’s narration remains strong and entertaining.

This is really a nice, reliable “cozy” Urban Fantasy series. I’m glad I stumbled upon it.

Okay, so…straight out of the second (pretty sure, it was the second) incarnation of Super Friends comes this Wonder Twins series. And it was . . . eh, okay, maybe?

Zan and Jayna are on Earth, sent here by their parents under the watchful eye of Superman. They’re open about their alienness, telling everyone at school about their home planet, its culture, and their abilities. And pretty much no one cares. After school, they hang out in the Hall of Justice as interns, they end up battling The League of Annoyance (villains too lame for consideration in the Legion of Doom). Oh, and eventually, Zan buys a circus monkey that turns out to be blue.

I really dug the art. I’m not sure what else to say about that—I’m interested in checking out more of Byrne’s work. Oh, wait…I have said nice things about him already. I should pay more attention to things like that.

The tone of this was wildly uneven—was it comedic? Was it earnest?. The League of Annoyance was too silly for this book—too silly even for the Teen Titans Go cartoon. I liked a lot of what went down in the Hall of Justice (especially the supercomputer).

Several weeks ago, I put a hold on this book from my Library. I was looking for some good Non-Fiction and this seemed along the lines of something a doctor was recommending. Also, the subtitle made me think I’d like it. I knew nothing about Brown or his expertise, but it seemed like a decent premise.

I guess I should start off with the Book Blurb (‘cuz you don’t want me summarizing this one)

Everyone says they want to be happy. But that’s much more easily said than done. What does being happy actually mean? And how do you even know when you feel it?

Across the millennia, philosophers have thought long and hard about happiness. They have defined it in many different ways and come up with myriad strategies for living the good life. Drawing on this vast body of work, in Happy Derren Brown explores changing concepts of happiness – from the surprisingly modern wisdom of the Stoics and Epicureans in classical times right up until today, when the self-help industry has attempted to claim happiness as its own. He shows how many of self-help’s suggested routes to happiness and success – such as positive thinking, self-belief and setting goals – can be disastrous to follow and, indeed, actually cause anxiety. This brilliant, candid and deeply entertaining book exposes the flaws in these ways of thinking, and in return poses challenging but stimulating questions about how we choose to live and the way we think about death.

Happy aims to reclaim happiness and to enable us to appreciate the good things in life, in all their transient glory. By taking control of the stories we tell ourselves, by remembering that ‘everything’s fine’ even when it might not feel that way, we can allow ourselves to flourish and to live more happily.

This was a snarky summary of pop psychology and pop philosophy, criticizing in others the same methods it embraces. I stuck with it for a while, trusting I could wade through the (willfully) ignorant dismissal of “Religion” (interestingly, the only example of Religion I encountered was Christianity (broadly considered)), and reductionistic history of Philosophy on to something useful. Actually, I’d have been okay with a quick dismissal of Christianity—but coming back to it time and time again, just to dismiss it as unworthy of engagement, got on my nerves. Also, the spleen-venting over The Secret went on far too long, and come on, it’s low hanging fruit. But in the end*, I just found myself resenting the endeavor and decided his neo-Stoicism wasn’t worth it.

* And by end, I mean, roughly the 25% mark.

One night, riding outside of town on a routine job Eddie LaCrosse comes across a woman in pretty rough shape. She’s naked, bruised, cut and burned—many of the burns look skillfully inflicted, as are all the rest of her injuries. Whoever worked her over knew what he was doing. A damsel in a lot of distress and after a brief conversation, Eddie offers to help her get away from whoever did this and protect her.

Then he’s struck from behind and wakes up as someone’s captive—she’s there, too. Not long after that, he wakes up again, at the bottom of a cliff, barely alive. The damsel didn’t fare that well. Once he’s patched up well enough to move and think, Eddie sets out to find out who she was, who killed her—and nearly him—and get a little revenge.

His search puts him in the way of one of the strongest criminal figures in his neck of the woods (a man that Eddie would’ve been happy never to have crossed paths with) and a government official trying to stop his investigation. Then an old friend of Eddie’s is killed, and that may be related to his case. Which sends him off into several other directions—including a new dragon-worshiping cult that’s somehow tied to the crime boss.

Eddie scoffs at the idea behind this cult—who, in his enlightened age, still believes in dragons? Eddie’s skepticism (that word’s too mild, but I can’t come up with a better one) seems out of place for someone reader know has known both a deity and a man who has lived centuries. Whether or not he’s right to disbelieve, the worshipers seem more than a little out to lunch, and are clearly easily manipulated.

There are a few good fight scenes, some good character growth and development since the last book (noteworthy because Eddie seemed to be dead-set against growth and development at the beginning of that novel). Liz, the courier we met at the very end of the first novel, is still around and is a huge part of Eddie’s life. We get a taste of that, but not as much as I’d have liked (for good reasons, I should add, I’m not saying that Bledsoe wasted her).

I think this might be a better novel than The Sword-Edged Blonde—the story’s a bit tighter, Eddie doesn’t engage in any casual cruelty, the characters are better developed (just a bit). But I don’t like it as much (each of the three or so times I’ve worked through the). There’s a missing je ne sais quoi to this, however, that restrains my enthusiasm. Do I recommend it on its own merits? Yeah. Do I recommend it as a necessary installment in this series? Definitely—read them all.

I’ve only re-read the first two novels up to this point, when I move on to book three in a month or so, it’ll be the first time I revisit it, and I’m really looking forward to that. It’s possibly the best of the series—at the least, I remember it being a step above this.
