Chapter 4

Mikka Jenax
The Redemption

“This is taking too long. Why is this waystation so backed up?”

Mikka Jenax paced the bridge of the Redemption, hands behind her back. She was brooding, but she didn’t care. They had been waiting for over an hour, stuck in the queue.

The waystation wasn’t typically a stopping point for regular traffic, which was what irked Mikka the most. If this was the way orbital traffic was going, rum-running through the sector was going to be a nightmare, but it wasn’t as though she had any other career paths laid out for her.

“A wave of leftover debris from the Infinity.” Kiara Ryson strode across the shuttle, assuming her seat in the cockpit. Mikka shook her head as the woman straightened her faux leather jacket and pulled her sunglasses down over her face.

“I know that, genius, but the Syndicate’s had seven years to clean this mess. I’m tired of it backing up the transport corridors.”

“Just sit back and wait it out. We get paid either way.” Kiara’s matching brown boots found their way onto the edge of the console, and she crossed her legs at the ankles and leaned back. With the woman’s short frame, her feet barely reached the panel from the navigation console’s seat.

Agitation coursed through Mikka’s veins, and she couldn’t calm herself enough to sit. Kiara’s laid-back attitude was usually a godsend, an anchor in her spaceport, but right now, with their next round of credits on the line, it was infuriating. Mikka adjusted her own gray jacket and ran a hand through her coarse black hair before reaching under the counter of the navigational console and pulling out a bottle of whiskey.

Might as well enjoy some decent alcohol while we’re waiting. Stars know, there won’t be any once we get to Lunar.

“We’ll get paid for this load,” she said as she poured, “but we’ll be late for the next one. Every hour of delay means credits off our paycheck.”

“And what do you propose we do? There’s a river of debris between the stations we have to navigate around. I’m not about to blow a hole through our engines for a couple chips.”

“I’m not proposing we do anything.” Mikka swilled the drink in her glass, watching as the artificial gravity pulled the droplets against its side, before draining its contents in a single shot. “I just hate sitting around. I’ve got bills to pay.”

“I do too, but you don’t hear me whining.”

“Times are tight. My mother’s not getting any better.”

Pfft.” Kiara waved a hand dismissively. “Times are always tight. You worry too much.”

Mikka bit her tongue as she poured another drink. She sipped this one slowly, allowing the woody taste of the alcohol to coat her tongue and throat as it slipped down. The amber liquid still bore the grit and metallic tint that Lunar whiskey always held, but it was a hell of a lot better than anything she’d find on the moon’s surface. The whiskey’s sharp fire was enough to distract her for a moment, but only barely. They had just picked up a shipment of computer parts and cabbage from Space Dock Eleven—one of their better-paying hauls. But their delivery window was narrow, and the clock was ticking.

If only we could get through this damn debris field.

The space station Infinity had been decommissioned seven years ago. A year later, some Syndicate fat cat decided it was time to put an end to the ghost station’s misery and pushed it into the Earth’s atmosphere, resulting in a series of explosions. Whoever that genius was, they hadn’t accounted for the chunks of metal, plastic, and the stars knew what else had been left behind from the explosion that ripped it apart. Instead of spreading, the fragments that were not drawn into the atmosphere clumped together in a hazardous blob. It usually occupied less frequently traveled paths, but over the past month, it had become lodged in the main transport corridor.

“It’s crazy we still can’t go around. These new space routes are getting on my nerves.”

“Easy, Mikka.” Kiara lifted both hands in a conciliatory motion. “We’ll deliver this shipment, pick up a round of Helium or whatever our next load is, and be on our way again before you know it. You might lose an hour or so of sleep, but no harm done. Chill out now and it won’t matter.”

“Looks like I don’t have a choice, do I?” Mikka slammed her glass down harder than she intended, sending a crack through its side. She grasped her temple between her thumb and forefinger, willing the knots above her brow to melt away. She didn’t have time for setbacks, and she was running out of patience. At some point, life had to throw her a bone.

“Is there any chance we can make up for it by taking a double load back?” she asked, hoping the suggestion didn’t come across as desperate.

“You’re really getting worked up, aren’t you?” Kiara commenced picking at the gunk beneath her fingernails with a nail file. “You know the drill—we can only take back what they’ve loaded up for us.”

The Redemption’s systems beeped and hummed around them, almost as if the ship was eagerly anticipating being allowed to continue on its way.

From where she was standing, Mikka could see a panel light blinking on the communications terminal, beeping in an irregular pattern.

“You expecting a call?” Kiara asked.

“Are you kidding? Who do I know? It’s probably just a patrol announcement.”

Kiara grunted, pulling up the details on her own console. “It’s no patrol. I don’t recognize this frequency.”

“Let’s see.” Mikka pulled up the holo-screen on her own console. The semiopaque projection came to life, hovering above her control pad.

A blinking bar of red lit up, displaying an incoming transmission on a frequency Mikka hadn’t seen used in a long time.

“Whoever it is, they’re using an old pirate channel,” she said. “But it’s one that’s been abandoned for years. The Orbital Guard cracked its encryption, and it’s been useless ever since.”

“Pirates?” Kiara’s tone grew serious for the first time all morning. “One of your old friends?” She stared at the panel, her eyes furiously darting between the readings as if considering whether there was danger in merely answering the hail. She ran her palms through her cropped purple hair. “What are we going to do?”

“Hang on!” Mikka lifted a hand toward her. “It could just be someone else found the frequency. Maybe it’s a wrong number.”

Hilarious,” Kiara said, her arms crossed.

“A pirate wouldn’t use this channel; the encryption has been compromised. If they were after our ship, they’d use a different means of communication.” Just the same, only a pirate or the Orbital Guard would have access to the encryption.

The console continued to chirp.

Mikka sighed and leaned over the nearest terminal, tapping the screen. The face of a young woman was projected above her datapad. Her hair was white and cut short, except for a single silver braid that hung down the side of her face. Blue and green beads were tied within it, along with a smaller pull decorated with a few grubby ship parts, metallic shards, and white stones.

Not stones. Bones.

Through the static-filled feed, it was impossible to tell if the bones were human or animal, though Mikka had a pretty good idea.

The woman’s eyes— a smoky gray—were as mysterious as the rest of her, as was the scar that curved down through the top and bottom of her left eye socket, as though someone had tried to blind her.

The woman stood, strapped in to hold her from floating around a craft with no gravity. It was hard to tell through the haze of smoke that filled the cabin, but Mikka recognized the markings of the woman’s vessel.

An escape pod.

The woman didn’t even flinch as sparks and bursts of flame surrounded her. The image flashed in and out, and it was obvious the feed might not last long.

“Thanks for picking up, love. I presume you’re Jax Luana?”

Mikka caught her breath.

She scanned the woman’s features for a hint of recognition, something that would tie this woman to her old life. Even if the woman’s hair or eyes were another color, even if her scar was gone, there wasn’t anything about her that struck Mikka as being familiar.

Besides, she was too young to be someone from Mikka’s past. She was twenty at most, and no one had dared to call Mikka by the name of Jax Luana in seven years. That would have made the person projected before her thirteen when Mikka had left her old life behind. Even aboard a pirate vessel, thirteen would have been far too young. It was possible she could have come across a youth at a bar or port city, but if that were the case, clearly the encounter wasn’t memorable.

Yet somehow this woman recognized her.

“I haven’t used that name in a long time.” Mikka gritted her teeth, attempting to hide her disdain. She absently pulled a knife from her belt, fidgeting with it to both calm her mind and send a message that she was still someone who wasn’t to be messed with. “My name is Mikka Jenax. Who are you? How did you gain access to this channel, and why are you calling me?”

The woman glanced over her shoulder as a sharp pop sounded from somewhere behind her. Her eyes bulged as, presumably, she located whatever the source of the noise had been. She raised a finger, unclipped her safety restraints, and floated off-camera momentarily.

No gravity plating in those old escape pods. Her ship must have been a relic.

Mikka rolled her eyes at Kiara, but her co-navigator didn’t meet her gaze.

“Ah, yes.” The woman reappeared, the cape she had been wearing now gone, revealing sweaty but well-toned shoulders. “The name’s Abigail. And, well, as much as I’d love to get into specifics—this deathtrap is about to break apart. I’d love it if you could give me a lift.”

Mikka groaned. Bringing an unknown woman aboard would be a risk. The woman clearly had a connection to Mikka’s past—a past she wanted to avoid. And something didn’t smell quite right.

“Not without knowing anything about you. You’re calling me on an old, encrypted frequency, referring to me by a name that has been dead for seven years. Can’t blame me for being skeptical.”

“Let’s just say, I’m both a ghost from your past and a damsel in distress. I didn’t come looking for you, love, but my circumstances have become quite . . . dire.” Another burst of flame erupted behind Abigail’s head. “I think we could come to a mutual understanding.

Great. This is just what I need.

“I gave that life up a long time ago,” Mikka insisted.

“Well, even if that is the case . . . could you at least save mine? I’m quite happy with the one I’ve got.”

Mikka cursed. “How much time do you have?”

She knew this was a bad idea, but there’d be no more lives lost because of her. Not if she could help it.

“Um . . .” Abigail’s eyes darted wildly to the surrounding capsule as she punched a few keystrokes on the pod’s display screens. “I’m actually kinda surprised I’m still here. I’m sending you my coordinates. You’re not far.”

Mikka nodded. “We’re on our way. Ping us again if the situation gets worse—but I can’t promise there’ll be anything we’ll be able to do if it does.”

“Aye, aye, captain.” Abigail gave a two-fingered salute accompanied by an impish grin as the screen faded to black.

Chapter 5

Mikka
The Redemption

“Are you insane?”

Kiara was on her feet, hands on her hips, marching toward Mikka.

Mikka raised an eyebrow. “Oh? Look who’s suddenly interested. You could have spoken up before. You kind of left me hanging there.”

“I didn’t expect you to be such an idiot! You can’t bring a pirate on board! We know nothing about her!”

Kiara turned to the console beside her and pulled up a holographic display. Kiara was a master at navigating the Syndicate network, but she still impressed Mikka with how quickly she had pulled up the profile of the woman on the escape pod.

Mikka’s eyes flashed. “Remember whose ship this is. I make the calls here.”

Kiara ignored her as she scrolled through the entry. “Smuggling. Theft. Conspiracy. Murder! Shit, I’m not ready to die today.”

Whatever sense of indifference Kiara had presented a few minutes ago had now disappeared. Being delayed on a job wasn’t something to get worked up about but letting a fugitive on board was another matter.

Understandably so, maybe, but . . .

“I don’t care who she is,” Mikka said. “I’m not leaving her out there to die. Not when she’s asked for our help.”

Kiara wasn’t ready to back down. “How do you know this isn’t a setup to lure us in? A trap to commandeer our ship?”

“She launched herself into a failing escape pod with the sole intent of hijacking a decades-old refurbished orbital trader? Is that what you think? There are easier, more lucrative targets out there.”

“Stranger things have happened.”

A fair point, but . . . No, Mikka couldn’t think of any legitimate reason why anyone would want the Redemption.

“I know how her type operate,” Mikka continued. “Our current payload isn’t worth the effort or the risk.”

“She knew you were here,” Kiara persisted. “That doesn’t raise red flags for you? She’s obviously learned enough to make you a target.”

And there it was. Kiara wasn’t implying the ship was the target.

I am.

The woman’s words hung over Mikka like a solar storm. “I presume you’re Jax Luana?”

Kiara was right: it did raise red flags. Huge, monumental red flags.

The only two people in the entire system who knew Mikka used to go by that name were her own mother and Kiara. Not only that, but Mikka had also undergone dozens of surgical procedures to alter her appearance, until she no longer resembled the woman Abigail had named.

Be that as it may, though, her mind was made up.

“I’m not leaving her out there to die,” Mikka reaffirmed, punching in the coordinates into the ship’s navigation system. “You can cuff her in the cargo hold until we get to Shackleton City if it makes you feel better, but let’s get her ass out of that pod before we decide what to do with her.”

“Toss her out the airlock—that’s what we should do with her,” Kiara muttered under her breath.

“We’re about ten minutes out,” Mikka said, ignoring the remark. “Hopefully, her pod can hold together until then.”

“It wouldn’t be the worst thing if we didn’t make it.”

Mikka grabbed the cracked whiskey glass beside her and hurled it across the shuttle. It landed squarely against an empty wall panel, shattering under the force of the impact. A million pieces of broken glass spread out along the hard paneled floor.

Kiara’s eyes grew wide with horror.

“What the hell is your problem?” Mikka shouted. “That could have been me in that pod! Do you think I didn’t deserve a second chance? Do you think I should have died with my companions? With my friends? Because if you do, you can find another ship.”

Kiara didn’t respond, instead looking bashfully toward her own console.

“Damn it, Kiara! A life’s a life,” Mikka said, composing herself. “Everyone deserves a shot. If someone hadn’t taken a chance on me, I wouldn’t be here now. Enough of the bullshit.”

Fine.” Kiara held her hands up in mock surrender. “But don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

She picked up an energy weapon—her trusty SC11 pistol—from beside her station and attached it to her belt. “And don’t think I’m letting her out of my sight. I might help save her life, but I’m not above locking her in the holding cell or calling in a patrol.”

“You call in a patrol and you risk exposing me as well,” Mikka reminded her. “I’m taking a monumental risk here. Don’t forget I have sins I need to atone for, and that pirate’s just admitted she knows more than she should. This is still my ship, Kiara; I may have agreed to split our profit for your expertise, but I’m still the one who calls the shots.”

Mikka tapped the projection before her with a few keystrokes. “I’m sending you the coordinates of the pod. The only thing I’m concerned about is making it back in time to hit our window through the debris field. We’ve got thirty minutes.”

“As long as I’m not the one who ends up out the airlock,” Kiara groused, pulling up her own holographic display. “Just promise me you won’t let her talk you into anything stupid.”

“I’ve got a sick mother to worry about. That’s enough excitement for me.”

The Redemption groaned as it propelled into a lower orbit. The crest of the Earth filled the viewport as the ship flew toward Abigail’s position.

Abigail wouldn’t have to worry about the void of space for long: she would soon enter the Earth’s atmosphere, and those pods weren’t made to withstand entry. She’d burn up long before she ran out of air.

“We’ve got to get off the main route,” Mikka said. “We’re not going to make it in time otherwise.”

“Might catch the attention of the OG if we do that,” Kiara warned. “If we get pulled over by a patrol, we won’t make it, either.”

Mikka cursed under her breath. Kiara was right, but she didn’t see they had any other choice. Plus, the woman was slowly becoming a thorn in her side, so she didn’t want to give her the satisfaction of being right.

“We’ll deal with that if it happens.”

Kiara shook her head but didn’t argue.

It didn’t take long before the Redemption’s scanners picked up the solitary pod adrift in the lower orbit, just off the main transport corridor. The gray escape vessel floated among a sea of debris, much of it several times larger than the pod itself. If it hadn’t been for Abigail’s distress call, Mikka would likely have never seen it among the rest of the floating remains, never mind known that there was a person inside.

Her ship didn’t just run into trouble, Mikka realized. It bloody exploded!

Whatever trouble this pirate had gotten herself into was possibly a bigger deal than Mikka had first realized. Orbital attacks weren’t common, especially this close to the planet. If her ship’s destruction was simply a matter of Abigail’s criminal record, there would have been other ways to handle things.

Mikka tapped her communications terminal. “Abigail, we’re descending to your position. Are you still there?”

“I’m here,” the pirate’s voice chirped. “But I’ve lost my video feed.”

“Is your docking equipment functional?” Mikka asked. “Are you able to connect to our clamps?”

“I don’t have any fuel, love. I’m dead in the water. All I’ve got is enough air to see the end of my days as I incinerate in orbit, and enough power to keep this channel open for a few more minutes.”

“All right.” Mikka nodded to herself. “Kiara, how close can you get us to the pod without being ripped apart by the surrounding debris?”

Kiara met her gaze. “Are you doubting me?”

“I’m just asking!” Mikka shot back.

“We can kiss her on the nose if you want.”

“Perfect, but she’ll be coming in the other end. Back her up so we can pull that pod into the cargo bay. I’ll seal it off manually.”

“It’s a good thing we loaded our shipment below deck this round.”

Mikka hit another few commands on her console. “Abigail, we’re going to pull you into our cargo hold. You shouldn’t get banged around too much, but you should probably strap yourself in.”

“Already buckled—and I’ve got nowhere else to go, love. Do what you need to do.

The Redemption shook again as Kiara decelerated, weaving around some of the larger pieces of debris.

“Hang on,” Kiara said. “I’ll get us in, but there’s a lot of garbage here. It could get bumpy.”

As promised, the shuttle rattled and bounced as it slowed. Mikka did her best to hang on as she pulled each of the four toggles that would seal off the ship’s bridge from the cargo bay and braced herself for the inevitable turbulence. The pressurized seal allowed them to release objects into the void of space, but they didn’t typically try to bring objects in. It was an unusual maneuver, but if anyone could pull it off, it was Kiara.

“I’m opening the cargo door now,” Mikka said.

“Reversing engines to overtake the pod,” Kiara replied.

There was a faint whoosh and a crack formed in the wall behind them. The Redemption groaned as she strained beneath the atmospheric pressure. A thud and a couple of shudders told Mikka their task had been successful, even before Kiara reported the outcome.

“And she’s in. Re-pressurizing the cargo bay.”

Mikka let out a sigh of relief. “All right. We’ve got twelve minutes until the waypoint sends us to the back of the line. I’d rather not miss our window through the debris field. Let’s get back and take this shipment home.”

“And hope the Guard doesn’t want to inspect our ship on the way through.”

“They won’t. The gates are backed up enough already.”

As if in response to her promise, the holo-screens and monitors in the shuttlecraft all shifted. Big, bold text in orange and red lit their screens, and a rendering of Abigail’s bust hovered above the panels.

Emergency Bulletin.

Fugitive Wanted. Charges: Theft. Conspiracy. Piracy. Murder.

Abigail Monroe. 10,000 Credit reward.

Mikka caught her breath.

“Spoke too soon. Looks like we won’t need to kill her,” Kiara remarked. “We can just turn her in.”

It took precisely 1 day for my month’s iron-clad TBR (so I can accomplish all the things I have in mind for the next 6 weeks) to go off the rails. Granted, it’s because I read a book faster than I expected to and could do a little mood-reading, but dagnabit—I had a plan!

Still, I’m actually ahead of schedule today, so…yay!!!

A Few Quick Questions With…Rebecca Carey Lyles

Rebecca Carey Lyles keeps popping up here this year—she’s participated in the Q&A about Writing in Idaho and in the series about Self-Publishing, now she’s here to talk about her latest book, Shaow Ranch (which I posted about earlier) and more. Hope you enjoy!


We’ve gone over your writer’s bio before, but I wanted to follow up on a couple of things. First, could you talk about your path to publication and what sparked your desire to write in the first place?
My path to publication was a long and winding road, ha. Like most authors, my desire to write began with reading. An amazing gift from our Creator, reading opens doors in our minds and in our lives. The thrill of holding that first Dick and Jane book in my hands in first grade remains with me to this day.

After reading multiple books in multiple genres and graduating from college with a degree unrelated to journalism or creative writing, I attended a six-week writing class. And got the writing bug.

From there, I enrolled in a how-to-write correspondence course and started writing articles and short stories. Some were terrible and some were published. Then I tackled books, both fiction and nonfiction. With the help of writing teachers, seminars and conferences, how-to books and magazines, and writing groups in Wyoming, Arizona and Idaho, I learned the craft.

But I haven’t stopped educating myself. I listen to writing-related podcasts and read articles, blogs, etc. on how to become a better writer, editor and marketer. I also rely on critique partners, beta readers and proofreaders to help me produce a quality product. Editing other authors’ work has enabled me to spot and address my own writing weaknesses.

Authors have dozens of ideas percolating at once (if not more), what was it about the idea that became Shadow Ranch that made you decide it was the one you wanted to focus on for a few months? Can you remember what nugget started that book? You discuss some of this in your podcast episode, “What Lurks in the Shadow Ranch Shadows” and I encourage people to give that a listen.
I don’t remember what I said on that podcast. Maybe I’m the one who should listen to it, ha. But as I recall my thought process, two things triggered the Shadow Ranch idea. First, I read Wife No. 19 by Ann Eliza Young (1844-1917). She married into a famous polygamous family at a young age and wrote about her personal experiences plus what she observed in other similarly trapped women, including her mother. Those women suffered incredible hardship and abuse, whether physical, emotional, mental, spiritual or financial. Usually, all of the above.

At the same time, friends were telling me about the Sister Wives television series. I haven’t watched the series, but to think a dysfunctional family’s illicit alliance has been glamorized for all the world to see is terribly sad. My personal opinion is that the adults and children in such “families” need our sympathy, not our adulation.

And that’s why I wrote Shadow Ranch. I wanted to show the emotional trauma “sister” wives experience as well as the control needed to ensure they continue to cooperate with the male-centric lifestyle. (It’s called brainwashing.) Today’s polygamists have all the problems their predecessors had way back when and possibly more. Yet, they continue to believe and teach that plural marriage ensures they’ll reach the “celestial kingdom” following death.

Talk to me about the research you did for this—I’d imagine it’d cover contemporary polygamy cults, some sort of trauma research—maybe some domestic abuse research? Possibly even research into some of the industries the compound used to fund themselves? How much time and effort does that part of the writing process does that take?
As I alluded to above, plenty of information is available online in news articles and documentaries. Books written by individuals who escaped polygamy and by authors who study plural marriage are also available. I just did a count and found 10 related books on my cult shelf, and more are out there. I’ve also researched narcissism and domestic abuse as well as cult mentality. Here are a couple of sites: https://psychcentral.com/ & https://www.icsahome.com/home.

Some say child labor and/or forced labor have enabled contractors in certain parts of the West to underbid competitors. Also, insiders say our taxes support thousands of polygamous women who don’t have marriage certificates for their unlawful unions. They receive food stamps, welfare payments, medical assistance, and other governmental benefits for themselves and their many children.

Regarding domestic abuse…all a person has to do is google “Warren Jeffs,” the imprisoned FLDS leader who’s still revered by thousands of followers. Truth is, I spend way too much time doing research for my stories. Rabbit trails, you know… In all seriousness, I can’t say how many hours research demands, but it probably consumes at least 25% of my writing time.

How difficult is it to write a convincing character like Brewster? And do you have to do something to get out of that frame of mind once you’re done for the day to keep him from taking up residence in your consciousness? How about one/all of the wives?
I hate to admit it, but writing nasty characters comes fairly easily for me. Brewster is an example of unrestrained selfishness. Our basic natures are selfish, mine included. Although my job is to portray a villain’s self-focused behavior, I must restrain my own tendency. Brewster is totally about satisfying his narcissistic self, however possible. If he has to turn on the charm to do so, no problem. His bottom line is not the other person’s well-being; instead, he uses others for his own self-perceived well-being. And, no, he doesn’t haunt my dreams, thank God!

To be honest, after being married almost 50 years, I cannot imagine having another so-called wife or wives in our lives. Maybe another woman could be tasked with changing diapers, cleaning toilets and pulling weeds. 😊 But it wouldn’t be worth the jealousy, the arguments, the broken hearts and hurt feelings. Or knowing my husband was regularly sleeping with other women—or favoring a certain one, maybe a younger one, which happens.

Although I try not to emotionally plumb the depths of polygamous women’s despair, I can imagine myself in their shoes and think how I would feel. Yet, nothing about plural marriage appeals to me. I cannot picture anyone finding happiness or fulfillment in that lifestyle. As a result, I want to warn others away from the fake glamor, intrigue and supposed pathway to heaven touted by groups like the FLDS.

A scripture verse in Ephesians says, “Have nothing to do with the deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.” I trust that’s what I’m doing in all my books, exposing the darkness and warning people away from evil.

In our correspondence, you said Shadow Ranch “kind of a crazy one to start with.” (I probably should’ve asked for a sane one to start with). Why do you say that? How does this differ from a more typical Rebecca Carey Lyles book? (assuming such exists)
Ha, I’m not sure I have a “sane” series! 😊 My first series, The Kate Neilson Series, addresses human trafficking, and the second series, Prisoners of Hope, tackles religious cults. People I talk with at book events seem to be somewhat familiar with trafficking and religious cults. But not many know about modern-day polygamy. Americans tend to think plural marriage was outlawed over a hundred years ago, which it was, and assume it’s no longer practiced.

Online numbers, on the other hand, suggest our country has 30,000-50,000 polygamous families and somewhere between 100,000 and 150,000 individuals involved in those family groups.

This is one of those novels that comes with Discussion Questions at the end—is this typical for you? What’s behind your decision to include them? These are written by Pat Watkins—what can you tell us about her? Does it feel a little strange to read someone distilling your work into some talking points?
Pat Watkins, a retired educator, is amazing—and so are her questions! She “gets” my books better than I do, ha. I could never do what she does with the discussion questions, and I appreciate her willingness to compile them for my books. She came up with the idea to include questions for book clubs. I haven’t received feedback, but I trust the questions stimulate good discussion.

To answer your question about Pat distilling my stories into talking points, I’m fascinated to learn what she gleans from my writing. Every reader has a different take on a story because we have different backgrounds, world views and life experiences. Yet, she comes up with universal questions that any reader or group of readers can ponder.

What is it about storytelling/writing that keeps it fresh for you? Is this a compulsion to keep going, or is it more pleasure? Along those lines, are there genres you are still hoping to try, or are you sticking in the lanes you’ve picked? Are there genres you don’t see ever trying?
A couple things keep storytelling/writing fresh for me (other than the notion a true writer supposedly can’t not write). First, I do a lot of research. Learning about other people groups, historical background, contemporary cultures, locations, flora and fauna, etc. fascinates me.

Also, unlike many authors, I prefer to rewrite a rough draft rather than drag the initial draft out of my head. Maybe that’s why I’m an editor as well as an author. I enjoy fixing awkward or confusing sentences, paragraphs and storylines.

Will I write in other genres? Although I set my novels in the West, I’ll probably never write a true shoot-em-up western. And I doubt I’ll ever pen a murder mystery or fantasy or science fiction, but you never know. A few years back, three other Treasure Valley authors and I compiled a short-story collection titled Passageways. A couple of my stories in that book have fantastical elements to them. So, I can never say never. 😊

What’s next for Rebecca Carey Lyles, author?
The second book in the Children of the Light Series, Crimson Arches, is finished but in super rough form right now. If all goes well, it should be available before the end of the year. The third book in the series (no name yet) is percolating in my brain…

What’s Shadow Ranch About?

So, I knew going in that this book was about a woman who ended up as part of a polygamous cult—so there’s no way that things are going to go well for Kasenia as we meet her. But even if I didn’t know that, after half of a page of dialogue between her and her romantic interest—you know that this guy is a creep. He might as well be named Redd Flagg, the heir of the vast Crimson Banner Estate (actually, I’m going to call him that for the rest of the post, just because).

Quite possibly because Kasenia has no girlfriends or confidantes to help her see how creepy Redd is, she falls for him. And almost instantly, things get worse—he’s a horrible, controlling husband, but she’s trying to make things worse. Then Redd turns on the charm—why don’t Kasenia and her brother come out to his family’s ranch for the weekend? Kasenia drags her younger brother along (he’s on to Redd—at least to a degree) and they head out for a chance to rekindle their marriage.

Of course, his family consists of multiple other wives (none of whom are happy to see her), enough kids to fill a schoolroom, and a few foster kids (there’s an ethnic and language difference between the foster children and Redd’s own). Between a combination of threats, guards, isolation (geographic and technological), and psychological manipulation, Redd has created a family full of people that are (almost entirely) devoted to him, and work themselves constantly to earn money for him and to earn approval from him.

Kasenia is determined to find a way out for herself and her brother—when she discovers that there’s more to Redd’s debauchery and devilry than she’d realized. The stakes are higher than ever—will she be able to find freedom for those he’s a threat to?

A Little More about Redd Flagg

Now I fully realize that when you’ve got someone with megalomaniacal tendencies like Redd, you’re going to find someone with a lot of messed up qualities. No one who deceives and manipulates a young woman into joining his group of wives—and keeps her as one through threat of violence (that he does follow through with to some extent) is in any sense a good guy. Moreover, I know that Lyles did some research and that there are more people like this in the U.S. than anyone wants to think about.

Still, I couldn’t help but think that Redd was too evil. “Like so evil, that you would say it was E-VEEL.” Every time you think you’ve found the depth of his moral void, there’s a new level of despicableness. Yes, that’s a common thing in fiction (or life), but it just felt like Lyles was laying it on a bit too thick.

Manipulative and abusive is enough—you’ve got yourself a true villain right there. But once she starts adding the other crimes that he’s committed and/or planning to commit? I’m not sure the reader or the story needed that.

I Was Uneasy About…

It’s a risky thing (for storytelling reasons and, more importantly, for the risk of blaspheming) to bring God into a work of fiction as an actor in the story. Multiple times characters who are trying to free themselves from Redd will pray and instantly—or quickly—something will happen that could be interpreted as an answer to that prayer. Is it possible for the reader or someone in the text to interpret these happenings as coincidental? Sure. But not one single character does—they all see the good things happening to them after praying as a direct answer to that prayer.

I absolutely am convinced that prayer works—but I don’t think it works like a bunch of kids praying for help getting away from a gunman and suddenly a mountain lion shows up to frighten off the gunman.

Using prayer like that almost turns God into a genie in the bottle—or at least those praying into Magicians with just the right spells ready to get the heroes out of danger.

I absolutely appreciate and celebrate Lyles taking prayer seriously, demonstrating people acting in faith and trust in the Most High with integrity and not turning them into hypocrites or anything. I also think she doesn’t go over the line to treat God as a genie—but she walks right up to that line. It makes me uneasy (at best) to read on several levels, though.

So, what did I think about Shadow Ranch?

Overall, there’s a lot to commend about this book. It reeks of research into situations like this one, it’s full of distinct and clearly drawn characters. Many of these characters are really well-developed and (largely) well-rounded—a mixture of good and bad qualities, understandable motives, and repulsive actions. The tension and the pacing are enough to keep propelling the reader through the twists and make it hard to put down without knowing what happens next.

According to the Internet—and a book I read in grade school (so I’m more inclined to believe it, but not much)—Abraham Lincoln in trying not to say he didn’t like a book said, “People who like this sort of thing will find this the sort of thing they like.” That’s very much what I want to say about this book. Let me rush to say that I did not dislike the book, but it wasn’t for me. I know there’s an audience out there who really get into this kind of thing (The Lifetime Movie Network alone proves that), but you’re not going to count me as part of it.

In a Q&A Lyles did with me months ago, she mentioned that her novels always have a happy ending. That alone kept me reading, just to see how she pulled it off—and there were a handful of times I considered abandoning the book. The ending could’ve been dark. It could’ve been ambiguous. It could’ve ended up in a pretty twisted and sordid way. But no, Lyles stuck with her pledge and provided a happy ending (that’s not too cheesy).

I do think the touch of romance (that didn’t involve Flagg or anything toxic) was a little out of place, and possibly unbelievable—definitely misguided on the part of the characters. But it feels on brand from what I can tell about Lyles’s work, so ignore me.

Again, there are people who will like this sort of book—and more power to them. If you think you’re likely in that camp in any way—read this. I think you’ll be rewarded. If you’re leery of it? I’m not going to tell you to give it a chance—trust your instinct. There are books that I’d approach differently, and encourage people to take a risk. Shadow Ranch isn’t one of those—it delivers what it promises.

Proxies by James T. Lambert: The Marx Brothers, Interstellar Threats, a Meddling Mother—Proxies Has it All

What’s Proxies About?

Jair Howard is a tech working to maintain the Faster-Than-Light network. Lambert doesn’t give us a lot of details about it, so I’m going to give you even less. The pilot he works with during his maintenance runs, Merab, is his girlfriend. Or maybe. Jair’s reluctance to commit to starting a family has put things on the ropes.

A bigger—or more pressing, anyway—concern is that during their last trip, Jair found some disturbing evidence of hacking into the security network. He’s having trouble convincing anyone of it because the evidence is largely gone. Jair keeps digging, though, he knows what he saw and anyone who can do what he saw—and remove all traces of it—is someone to worry about. Then some of the evidence reappears, and it points at Jair. Suddenly everyone who doubted what he said about a security breach believes it and is coming for him.

To keep his freedom for a little while longer—and hopefully to find proof of what’s really going on—he needs to get into space and get access to the network. The only way that’s going to happen is with Merab’s help.

Remember When AI Wasn’t the Enemy?

Jair doesn’t work alone—in fact, he doesn’t do most of the work. He has a team of AIs helping him. Jair’s a classic movie fan. Black and White Movies that we consider classics today—he’s far enough into the future that he has to think of them as practically ancient. He’s such a fan that he’s given his four primary AIs the names and personalities of the Marx Brothers.

He spends a lot of time tweaking their personalities and humor to get them to better match the versions he knows from film—and finding a way to get Harpo to be able to communicate what he needs to while capturing the essence of the silent brother. It’s something for him to fiddle with while waiting during interstellar travel or while a report generates and the like.

It’s a fun bit of whimsy in the book—and it felt very strange to read while being hit with headline after headline after headline about the problems with AIs this summer.

So, what did I think about Proxies?

The heart of this book isn’t the threat posed by the hacking that Jair found and then lost, etc. Nor is it the efforts that he and Merab undertook to expose and maybe stop the threat. It’s in Merab and Jair’s efforts to get their relationship to work. The bulk of that is on Jair, to be sure—but Merab has some work to do, too.

That’s about all I’m willing to say about that, although it deserves more—because Lambert did a great job with that. As much as I enjoyed the relationships that the protagonist of his first book found himself in, they didn’t feel as grounded as this one. They were clearly there to serve a story, create conflict, and so on. Here, the relationship is the story—and that makes all the difference. If he continues to grow as an author this way, I’m going to be happy reading him for a long time.

This is a Space Opera, so the details of space flight and other science-y stuff don’t need to be really well worked out or discussed—which is good, because Lambert doesn’t bother to (whether that’s because of the genre, or he went with the genre so he didn’t have to doesn’t matter). And a lot of the detailed work into the investigation can be waved away with “Groucho and Zeppo did a thing and came back to tell Jair the results.” I both wanted to see more of the science-y/investigation bits and was perfectly satisfied with the lack of them, because that left time for all the people-y stuff. (I’m clearly in the mood to talk in generalities today).

If you’re looking for some light Space Opera with a lot of heart—you’ll want to pick up Proxies. If you’re not looking for that, you still might want to try it, it’s a fun way to spend a few hours.

Featuring nearly 500 comics from the strip’s debut in November 1985 through March 1987, this is the first set in a series of seven.” I didn’t really like the look of (or, from what I heard the binding of) the two-volume set, and I can’t track down all the original paperbacks. This looks like a great way to collect the classics.

I’ve been shot at, more than once. There are quite a few people who want me dead for one reason or another. And yet I have never taken a bullet. Until today.

What’s Norah’s Ark About?

This is a book about a couple of eleven-year-olds in the English city of Hull who bond over their mutual attempts to help animals. Starting with a nest of baby birds who’ve been orphaned by a hungry cat, these two overcome various barriers (largely in the form of their parents) to various stray and abandoned animals they encounter. Along the way, they end up helping each other through some of the bigger challenges they’ve faced.

Norah (and her father)

Norah’s father lost his job a few years ago, which led to them losing their home. Since then they’ve bounced from one temporary housing situation to another, barely scraping by on his benefits and whatever short-term and low-paying jobs he can get. They attend a church regularly—and gorge themselves on the post-service snacks. They also use a food bank from time to time—but it’s hard for her father to swallow his pride and deal with the judgemental looks they receive when they do (how many of these looks are only in his mind, it’s hard to tell—but some of them are real).

Norah has some learning disabilities, too—and she’s never in one school long enough to really get the help she needs. Which leaves her open to being bullied while she falls further and further behind.

Norah loves animals and would do anything for a pet. Because she can’t get one due to their housing situation—well, other than the spiders she keeps on her window sill—she does what she can for whatever strays she finds like the aforementioned birds. She takes care of them for a while until one day they’re missing. They and their whole nest—what could’ve possibly happened?

Then she sees some rich boy on the other side of the fence carrying that nest. It’s not fair—he has so much already, a great house, a big yard, a treehouse, fancy clothes (that fit!), and whatever he wants to eat (he is a little overweight).

Adam (and his parents)

Adam and his parents moved from London to Hull a few years ago to help him get the specialized treatment he needed for leukemia. It’s in remission now, but his mom has become overprotective following his diagnosis. Since she had to leave her job to care for him (and hasn’t thought about going back to work), his father has to work harder than before and really has no time for anything else—even Adam.

He can’t go anywhere without her. He can’t go back to school—even if the doctors say he’s not as immunocompromised as he once was, his mother still insists on a private tutor. He can’t go swimming—he’d dreamed of going to the Olympics before he got sick—again, because of all the exposure to germs, people, and other things that could hurt him. His treatments and lack of exercise have left him out of shape. He’s lonely. All he wants is a friend and to do something outside his home.

When he discovers that the neighbor’s mean (at least to him) cat has eaten the mother bird, he takes the nest up to his treehouse (without his mother noticing and panicking about the filthy animals). He notices a girl on the other side of the fence quickly riding off on her bike—what a great life she must have—able to go wherever she wants!

The Grass Ain’t Always Greener…

Soon, the two actually meet and decide to work together to help the birds get to safety.

They learn more about each other—both discovering the struggles the other has gone through. They have unfortunate encounters with bullies and thieves—and discover their parents want them to have nothing to do with each other.

But neither of them has really had a friend in a long time and they’re unwilling to lose their new one. So they do what they can to keep that friendship—even if that means being disobedient. Both kids soon have to deal with new problems with their parents and need someone to rely on.

So, what did I think about Norah’s Ark?

That’s a really good question, one that I’ve been chewing on for a few days now.

I do have a few concerns. For example, both Norah and Adam (Adam is a bit more prone to this) can be too mature and understanding for their ages when it comes to their parents and what motivates them. Most of the time, Williamson gets them right—unreliable narrators (not because they’re dishonest, but because they’re 11 and don’t get everything the adults are doing) who are doing their best to make it in the world and cope with the information they have, with the impulsivity and insufficient emotional control you’d expect. But occasionally, they’re too perceptive, too wise…basically, they sound like they’ve sat through a decent amount of therapy and have internalized it. Which would be fine if they’d been in therapy, or were in their twenties. But they’re a decade and change away from being fully believable on some of these fronts.

The other thing (and I’ll get into vague spoilers for the rest of this paragraph, so feel free to skip it) that has bugged me since before I finished it—the ending is a bit hard to swallow. It’s too easy. It’s too unearned for my tastes. It’s like Williamson took a page from Wayne’s World and went with the “Mega Happy Ending” and just imposed it at a certain point. Please, don’t misunderstand me—I want Adam and Norah to get happy endings. I like where the book puts them in the last chapter—I’d have been displeased if they didn’t end up where they did. But…it would’ve felt more real if it didn’t go that way. Or if it took slow, incremental work for them to get there—with a few big jumps along the way, sure. To use a bad illustration—you know how in some movies the uncoordinated guy goes through a training montage and suddenly can do all sorts of things they couldn’t before the song started? Well, it was like that—but Norah and Adam skipped the montage and went from clumsy to ready to win the dance/singing/martial arts contest.

Now this is likely just me—I’m willing to bet that most readers in the target audience aren’t going to have those issues. But I’d quite like to ask a few about their experience reading the books, particularly the ending.

Ignore all that for a moment (as I’ve said over and over again—it takes many more words to explain a problem I have with a book than to say all the good things I want to say). This novel nails the struggles for both these children and their parents—who are clearly trying their best (even if the kids don’t always see that)—no one in this book has an easy time of it. They’re all in extreme circumstances, with the cards stacked against them—and everyone is just trying to get through it as intact as they can for themselves and their family.

I loved, loved, loved that someone wrote about these situations in a Middle Grade book—you just don’t see enough things like this (or at least, I don’t, I shouldn’t suggest it doesn’t exist). I remember when I was in that audience, and Wooly Mammoths roamed the earth, that I got seriously excited when I came across a book that dealt with things like this, even if it made for hard reading. Since then, I don’t see it too often.

It’s impossible to read this without feeling empathy for Norah or Adam—or their parents—and to extrapolate that empathy and sympathy toward non-fictional people in similar circumstances. I’m not saying that this book is going to fix all sorts of prejudices that a child might have and fill playgrounds everywhere with mini-Brené Brown clones. But it should make it a little easier for them to put themselves in someone else’s shoes, to understand that peers—or strangers—could be going through something.

If you’ve read and enjoyed When We Were Vikings by Andrew David MacDonald, you’re going to want to check this one out. If you haven’t—read both books. I think readers young and old will find a lot to admire and commend in these pages. I feel strange saying you’ll enjoy a book about so much suffering—but you will, particularly when the characters find a moment of joy or peace. It’s very effective—and affective—to watch these two become heroes and get different endings than either expected for most of the book.
