Last week, the way I phrased things made it seem like I was slogging my way through The Hero Interviews—I’m not. I’m working through it slowly while I do other things. A long book + multitasking= it takes a bit to get through, that’s all.

I’m about to finish the very amusing The Hero Interviews by Andi Ewington and the ARC for Scratching the Flint by Vern Smith (a book answering the question why shouldn’t Toronto have noir?). I also am listening to Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz, narrated by Samantha Bond, Allan Corduner on audiobook.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished Josef Matulich’s The Silk Empress and Underground by Kat Richardson, Mia Barron (Narrator) on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be the next book in The Azure Archipelago trilogy, The Foundling, the Heist, and the Volcano by K. R. R. Lockhaven. My next audiobook should be more madcapery with Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun by Elle Cosimano, Angela Dawe.

Are you reading anything good?

HOW is it February already? This looks more like last week’s post than I’d hoped, but eh…stuff happens.

I’m still working my way through the very amusing The Hero Interviews by Andi Ewington and just started listening to Hunting Fiends for the Ill-Equipped by Annette Marie, Cris Dukehart (Narrator) on audiobook.

What did you recently finish reading?

Yesterday, I finished Tiffany McDaniel’s On the Savage Side, a harrowing and beautiful book, and How to Astronaut: An Insider’s Guide to Leaving Planet Earth by Terry Virts on audio, which was not-at-all-harrowing and plenty of fun.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be The Silk Empress by Josef Matulich (still) and my next audiobook should be Underground by Kat Richardson, Mia Barron (Narrator).

How are you starting the month?

I’m reading The Hero Interviews by Andi Ewington and On the Savage Side by Tiffany McDaniel—two books that couldn’t be more different if they tried. I should be wrapping up the audiobook of Really Good, Actually by Monica Heisey, Julia Whelan (Narrator) this morning.

What did you recently finish reading?

Most recently, I finished The Perception Of Dolls by Anthony Croix, edited by Russell Day and Half-Off Ragnarok by Seanan McGuire and Ray Porter, Emily Bauer (Narrators) on audio. I’m trying to figure out how to write about the former, and not feeling incredibly successful.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be The Silk Empress by Josef Matulich and my next audiobook should be The Wizard’s Butler by Nathan Lowell, Tom Taylorson (Narrator). I’m looking forward to both—but honestly have no recollection at all of what either one is about.

Are you reading anything good?

I am having the hardest time staying awake this week, which is messing with my reading a bit, but I’m so tired that I don’t care (which is a strange feeling for me, normally that’d get me stressed out). I know it doesn’t matter—this is a hobby, not a paying gig—it’s just an observation.

I’m reading the captivating while creepy and unnerving (and likely to get nastier-sounding adjectives before I’m done) The Perception Of Dolls by Anthony Croix, edited by Russell Day and am listening to the strangely charming  Ms. Demeanor by Elinor Lipman, Piper Goodeve (Narrator) on audiobook.

What did you recently finish reading?

Last week, I finished Seanan McGuire’s Lost in the Moment and Found and A Drink Before the War by Dennis Lehane, Jonathan Davis (Narrator) on audio. Both were everything I hoped for.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be The Hero Interviews by Andi Ewington—I’m going to need a lighter read after my current novel, and this should fit the bill. My next audiobook should be Half-Off Ragnarok by Seanan McGuire and Ray Porter, Emily Bauer (Narrators) as I continue revisiting this series.

What’s getting your attention lately?

You ever spend days planning your reading around the release day of a certain book and then when the book doesn’t arrive have to rejigger a bunch of your plans (including how to spend the majority of your time off of work for the night)? Please say I’m not alone in doing this. It’s been one of those weeks for me, the result of my rejiggering is in the first and third answers below.

I’m reading the riveting and complex Blackwater Falls by Ausma Zehanat Khan and I’m revisiting the Alex Verus finale with Risen by Benedict Jacka, Gildart Jackson (Narrator) on audiobook.

What did you recently finish reading?

Yesterday, I finished The Night Watch by Neil Lancaster (and I am so upset with myself for sleeping on that one) and the goofy Destructive Reasoning by Scott Meyer, Luke Daniels (Narrator).

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should bring me back to Eleanor West’s School for Wayward Children with Lost in the Moment and Found by Seanan McGuire . It’s been too long since I spent time with Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro, so my next audiobook should be A Drink Before the War by Dennis Lehane, Jonathan Davis (Narrator).

What are you up to?

One of the things I’m trying to focus on this month is reading things I’d bought and/or planned on reading in 2022. I’m sure I’ll slip up and read a couple of other things (there are two books slated for release this month that I know I’ll read, and one or two others that I’ll probably get to), but that’s my target. It’s reflected in this WWW, and hopefully 2/3 of the next one.

I’m reading Pieces of Eight by Peter Hartog (a book I was planning on reading in February or March) and am listening to Triptych by Karin Slaughter, Michael Kramer (Narrator) on audiobook–I picked this up because I was curious about the ABC series that’s based on this series (and I’ve been meaning to sample Slaughter for ages now). Between the first third of this book and the commercials for the show, it looks like one of the loosest adaptations in recent history.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished Troy Lambert’s Harvested (a book I bought in August for the Literary Locals series), and I can tell you I’ll be reading more from this series soon(ish). Last week, I finished The Princess Beard by Delilah S. Dawson and Kevin Hearne, Narrated by Luke Daniels on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be The Night Watch by Neil Lancaster (which I ordered in February and received in September) and my next audiobook should be Destructive Reasoning by Scott Meyer, Luke Daniels (Narrator).

I’m (finally!!) reading E.B. White on Dogs edited by Martha White (I bought this in January with the intention of reading it ASAP. Oops.) and am listening to Your Perfect Year by Charlotte Lucas, translated by Alison Layland, and Narrated by Carly Robins and P. J. Ochlan on audiobook (which I’ve actually owned longer).

What did you recently finish reading?

Yesterday, I finished Rainbow Rowell’s Scattered Showers and Matt Witten’s Killer Story—one book was full of sweetness, light, and love, and the other was absent of pretty much all of that. The most recent audiobook I finished was Midnight Blue-Light Special by Seanan McGuire, Emily Bauer (Narrator).

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be Early Grave by Paul Levine and my next audiobook should be The Princess Beard by Delilah S. Dawson and Kevin Hearne, Narrated by Luke Daniels—nothing like a couple of sure-fire pleasers to close out the year.

I’m reading the very charming Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett and am continuing my revisit of InCryptid by listening to Midnight Blue-Light Special by Seanan McGuire, Emily Bauer (Narrator) on audiobook.

I just finished Akwaeke Emezi’s Pet, which was…odd and powerful. My most recent audiobook was Secrets Typed in Blood by Stephen Spotswood, Kirsten Potter (Narrator) on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be Yes, Chef: A Memoir by Marcus Samuelsson and Veronica Chambers. Assuming I get my post about All These Worlds finished in time, my next audiobook should be Heaven’s River by Dennis E. Taylor, Ray Porter (Narrator) (otherwise, I’m not sure).

I just finished Olivia Blacke’s Vinyl Resting Place, a fun cozy, and Junkyard War by Faith Hunter, Khristine Hvam (Narrator) on audio, which wasn’t cozy at all.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be Pet by Akwaeke Emezi—I have no idea what to expect out of this, I am going solely off of a recommendation. My next audiobook should be the third installment in the Pentecost and Parker series, Secrets Typed in Blood by Stephen Spotswood, Kirsten Potter (Narrator).
