Opening Lines: The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress by Robert A. Heinlein

Head & Shoulders used to tell us that, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” That’s true for wearing dark shirts, and it’s especially true for books. Sometimes the characters will hook the reader, sometimes the premise, sometimes it’s just knowing the author—but nothing beats a great opening for getting a reader to commit.

I see in Lwnava Pravda that Luna City Council has passed on first reading a bill to examine, license, inspect—and tax—public food vendors operating inside municipal pressure. I see also is to be mass meeting tonight to organize “Sons of Revolution” talk-talk.

My old man taught me two things: “Mind own business” and “Always cut cards.” Politics never tempted me. But on Monday 13 May 2075 I was in computer room of Lunar Authority Complex, visiting with computer boss Mike while other machines whispered among themselves. Mike was not official name; I had nicknamed him for Mycroft Holmes, in a story written by Dr. Watson before he founded IBM. This story character would just sit and think—and that’s what Mike did. Mike was a fair dinkum thinkum, sharpest computer you’ll ever meet.

Not fastest. At Bell Labs, Buenos Aires, down Earthside, they’ve got a thinkum a tenth his size which can answer almost before you ask. But matters whether you get answer in microsecond rather than millisecond as long as correct?

Not that Mike would necessarily give right answer; he wasn’t completely honest.

OTD: Fer-de-Lance by Rex Stout First Published in 1934

As this is the 90th anniversary of Fer-de-Lance‘s publication, I should’ve planned ahead and done something big. But life intervened (as it so often does). Maybe I’ll get my act together for 95–or 100. In the meantime, this slight reworking of a post from a couple of years ago should do the trick.

On October 24, 1934 Rex Stout’s first Nero Wolfe novel, Fer-de-Lance was published and history was made–no one knew it at the time, of course, especially not Stout. He’d tried a variety of other novels before, but hadn’t found much success with them, but he hit pay dirt with this one. He’d try related and similar works in the years to come, but they weren’t as successful as these and soon he just stayed with the characters he introduced in this novel.

This series influenced other series, later writers, and a few stories/series that are inspired by it. There’ve been a handful of movies and TV series based on the books, too (and a radio series, now that I think about it). And most importantly, it’s become a beloved part of the lives and bookshelves of devoted fans around the world. I’m one of them…the impact these characters, these stories, and the author have had on me cannot be overstated (for good or ill). I’m not alone here.

And it all started with this book 90 years ago.

A year or two before I started this blog, I re-read the series, here’s what I wrote about the novel back then.


Fer-de-Lance paperback coverRex Stout’s Fer-de-Lance is the first of 40+ books (novels or short story collections) featuring the exploits of private investigator Archie Goodwin (2 parts Huck Finn, 1 part Philip Marlowe) and his eccentric employer, Nero Wolfe (1 part Sherlock Holmes, 1 part Mycroft Holmes)—yes, I am one of those who think that Archie’s the main character in the misnomered Nero Wolfe Mysteries.

In reading about Rex Stout/Nero Wolfe (either by fans or professionals) there’s an oft-quoted line from Walter D. Edmonds that you simply cannot avoid seeing, “I shall never forget my excitement on reading Fer-de-Lance, sprung like Athena perfect form the Jovian brow, fresh and new and at the same time with enough plain familiar things in scene and setting to put any reader at his ease.” Aside from Oliver Wendell Holmes’ margin note (“This fellow is the best of them all.”), there’s nothing that sums up Fer-de-Lance better, sprung like Athena indeed.

It really doesn’t matter how many times you’ve read it, but upon re-reading (and probably even initial reading if this isn’t your first encounter with Wolfe and Archie—my initial read was more than 20 years ago, so I don’t remember) you can’t help be struck by how much  Fer-de-Lance fits the model of a mature Wolfe novel—almost all the elements are there. These characters are introduced in practically their final format—a little tweak here and there over the course of the first few novels (off the top of my head I can’t say how many) will get them in their final form, plus the addition of a few other characters will be necessary, but the cast of characters is already over 90% complete. In the first chapter, we already have Wolfe, Archie, Fritz, Theodore, Fred, and Saul presented in a manner fully recognizable to the familiar reader. The story follows a fairly typical route (though the identity of the murderer is revealed far earlier than is the norm), and the essential environmental elements are there—the beer, Wolfe’s eccentric schedule, the orchids, a relapse, the food, a cocky scheme to land a client, an outrageous stratagem for getting that last essential piece of evidence (not that Wolfe needs it to solve the crime, merely to prove he was correct)—the only thing missing is the gathering of the witnesses/suspects/clients for Wolfe to reveal everything in his characteristically dramatic fashion. One recurring thought I had while reading it this time was that this could just as easily have been the fifteenth installment in the series as the first.

As I don’t recall reading about Stout consulting notes—and he’s known not to rewrite any part of these stories—the fact that he can keep all the idiosyncrasies he establishes here well-intact over the next 40 years is a testimony to his mental prowess as much as anything else could be. (Contrast Stout to contemporary authors who find themselves re-writing their own protagonist’s biographies thanks to their refusal to check their facts/fix errors).

Enough of that—what about the book itself? Wolfe takes a small case as more of a favor/indulgence/get-him-off-my-back to one of his operatives and in doing so, stumbles upon a fact or two that leads him to conclude that a university president has been murdered in a preposterous manner. Seeing (and seizing) the opportunity to earn a large fee from this, Wolfe sends Archie to place a $10,000 bet with the District Attorney responsible for the area the president died in—wagering that an exhumation of the body will produce two particular evidences of homicide. No bet is made, but since it’s Nero Wolfe suggesting it, the body’s dug up, the evidence found and we’re off…

A fun read, a decent mystery (Stout will get better at this), great characters, and a good introduction to a wonderful world fit for revisiting over and over again.

I might have read a Heinlein book in Middle School—I honestly don’t remember if I finished it. But he’s one of those guys you often wonder if you missed something by skipping. So, I might as well, right? Also, it’s the book that the SF Book Club will be discussing next week.

Not Till We Are Lost continues Taylor’s effort to explore deeper and darker issues—while not losing all the yuks. I’m really enjoying this.

The less said about Hermit of Paradise the better. So…Dreadful is about a dark wizard who wakes up in his lab, with no recollection of his name, his goals, why he has a princess locked up in a cell, or pretty much anything else. It’s worth the time. Also…last week, in our RPG session, I ended up playing a necromancer who had no memory of his abilities (or that he was a necromancer). It was a nice bit of coincidental timing, and I probably owe Rozakis something for borrowing so much.

What’s Hermit of Paradise About?

This starts with an old friend, Sunny, asking Aubey to find her some justice for an old crime.

Then we flashback a little bit to watch Aubey’s last days on the Dallas Police as a detective before his retirement.

Then we flashback to Aubey’s childhood days, living in his family’s home on a lake where he spends summers reading, fishing, and getting into antics with some older men and some children the same age. Free-range parenting at its best, and despite hanging out with criminals, Aubey seems like a well-adjusted kid in love with nature. The fateful summer in consideration, however, brings him into contact with a couple of peers who will change his life—including the aforementioned Sunny.

Something traumatic happens at the end of a beautiful summer—something that will haunt Aubey and his friends for the rest of their lives.

We then flash-forward to his retirement, Sunny asking for justice (with more context), and Aubey’s efforts to get that for her.

That’s the barebones of the plot, anyway. I gave a richer (and provided by the author/publisher) description on my Spotlight yesterday.

I’m Going to be Frank with You

(I’m always honest when it comes to my opinion on books, as far as I know, but occasionally I’ll pull a punch)

Under any other circumstances, this would’ve been a DNF for me. The pacing was off; the book spent far, far, far too long in the childhood section compared to the retired adult section; given what Aubey knew about the crime, too much of what we know about the people/area/history comes from inelegant info-dumping; what he did in the retirement section to investigate it made no sense—other than to make more opportunities for info-dumping….and I don’t want to beat up on things.

I could go on for paragraphs on how bad the dialogue was—I really want to rant about it (actually, ask anyone who lives in my house and they’ll tell you what I think of it). But let me just tell you this much: there are several conversations between two people where each part of the exchange contains the other persons name in the first sentence.

Allow me to illustrate from a well-known scene (with apologies to Mr. Tarantino):

Vincent asks, “And, Jules, you know what they call a… a… a Quarter Pounder with Cheese in Paris?”
“Vincent, they don’t call it a Quarter Pounder with cheese?” Jules asks, surprised.
“No man, they got the metric system. Jules, they wouldn’t know what the fuck a Quarter Pounder is.” Vincent laughs and shakes his head.
“Then, Vincent, what do they call it?” Jules raises his voice.
“Jules, they call it a Royale with cheese.” Vincent replies, stretching out “Royale.”
“A Royale with cheese. Vincent, what do they call a Big Mac?” Jules wonders, chuckling.
Vincent shrugs a little, “Well, Jules, a Big Mac’s a Big Mac, but they call it le Big-Mac.”
“Le Big-Mac, Vincent.” He practices “Ha ha ha ha. Vincent, what do they call a Whopper?”
“I dunno, Jules, I didn’t go into Burger King.”

Except every sentence should be longer—if not a small paragraph—overflowing with exposition and nowhere near as interesting. If I had a hard copy, I’d have thrown it across the room the second time I encountered this (I could let it go once). But I wasn’t about to throw my phone or e-Reader, as nice as it would’ve felt.

So, what did I think about Hermit of Paradise?

The childhood flashbacks made me think of someone trying to go for a Scout, Jem, and Dill feel. Or something out of a William Kent Krueger novel. It even kind of reminded me of A Snake in the Raspberry Patch by Joanne Jackson or something of a Tiffany McDaniel-talks-about-young-people feel. But Sanders isn’t in their league (yet?).

Sanders swung for the fences in every chapter—more than once in every chapter. I think there’s a decent (not necessarily good, but at least decent) novel hidden here. But Sanders needs a few more drafts and a skilled editor to bring that out.

If I was talking about intentions, desires, and aims here—I’d have a lot of good to say. But I’m not—I’m talking about the characters, writing, and novel—so I can’t say a lot of good.

I do think the characters (most of them, anyway) were promising—too many of the minor characters were interchangeable enough that we didn’t need them all. Again, a little more refining and editing would’ve helped a lot there.

MUSIC MONDAY: “There She Goes” (Grandpappy Science Edition)

Music Monday

Music Monday's originated at The Tattooed Book Geek's fantastic blog and has shown up hither, thither, and yon since then.

The Grandcritter has developed a passion for a particular version of “There She Goes.” So I did a little experiment to see if he’d recognize differences in the three versions I’m most familiar with, if he’d respond to the versions he never heard before, and if there was any particular preference.

The Boo Radleys:

He recognized it, but was fairly ambivalent toward it (not an opinion I share, I should stress)

Sixpence None the Richer:

He enjoyed this. Seemed intrigued by the idea someone not The La’s performed it.

The La’s:

The original is definitively the best version (if you ask him). This song will stop a hangry fit, it will increase a great mood, it will capture his attention for at least 3 repeats and will induce dancing that will make any human that can see him smile..

A Few More Quick Questions With…Steven Max Russo

This morning I brought you my (overdue) take on Steven Max Russo’s third novel, The Debt Collector, and now I’m very pleased to bring you a few questions about the book with the author.


Last time we talked, you stressed how you were a pantser and many things about the books I asked about just came about as you were writing. But I have to wonder—that striking visual that opens The Debt Collector—did you sit down with that in mind, or did it come up later and put it in during revisions?
That’s a very perceptive question. With my first two novels, Thieves and The Dead Don’t Sleep, the prologues were both written after the novels were pretty much completed. I wanted something vivid and dramatic at the very beginning to draw the reader in. But that wasn’t the case with The Debt Collector.

When I was in college, I was driving through town when I witnessed a young man walk nonchalantly out of liquor store wearing nothing but his underpants – tighty-whities as I recall. It was early afternoon on a warm and sunny spring day. He was carrying what appeared to be a bottle of vodka in one hand and his wallet in the other. It wasn’t a robbery or anything nefarious. No alarms or people screaming or any commotion whatsoever, just a young guy in his underpants walking out of a store in the middle of the day. When I began writing what turned into the The Debt Collector, I just started typing one evening and that memory from my youth of the young guy in his underpants walking out of the store popped into my head and I built the story from there.

Along the same lines—with this book, did you have a vague idea for the plot, or did you start with Abigail and/or Hector and create a story for them?
I had no idea of a plot or any characters beyond the opening scene with Abigail and Hector. The story simply emerged as I began writing. When I write, I often feel like I’m just following my characters around in a parallel universe or watching them in something like an old-time newsreel that runs in my head and I simply write what I see and hear. I often feel more like a reporter than a fiction author. I know that sounds strange, but that’s how it feels.

Do you see some sort of line between your protagonists? Are their common traits? Is there some sort of progression between Skooley/Esmeralda, Frank/Bill, and Abigail/Hector?
I’m not really sure how to answer this. I strive to make all of my characters relatable and believable. Their environments and their history and their circumstances are different than those of most people and that obviously affects their world view, but once you learn a little about the individuals, you can at least recognize if not understand their motivations from their unique perspectives. And I guess there are some common traits in my characters, but heck, you can say that about most people. As for any progression of the pairings mentioned in your question, I don’t really see any. Each relationship between the characters is different – Skooley and Esmeralda start as reluctant partners and then evolve into lethal adversaries; Frank and Bill have a warm, familial relationship as uncle and nephew that gets somewhat tested under stress; and Abigail and Hector are basically strangers who develop a friendship and bond under unique circumstances.

Going back to the pantser idea, there are so many little clues, little tidbits tying elements of this novel together—things you may gloss over early on that come back in a satisfying way.
A big part of writing is reading what you wrote – and then re-writing, re-reading, and re-writing over and over (and over) again. Once the main story is established and I have an idea for what I think will make for a satisfying ending, then I go back, re-read (again), and drop in those little clues and tidbits where I think they work best to lead the reader along, help raise the stakes, and/or tie things together.

There are a few characters I’d like to ask you about, but I can’t think of a way to do so without spoiling something (next time—first time?—you’re in Idaho, I’ll buy you a drink and ask), so I’ll let you decide who to talk about? Is there a supporting/minor character that surprised you as you wrote this, that you ended up enjoying more than you expected? Maybe someone that you expected would be around for a scene or two to move the story along and then ended up being a major player?
I think the character in The Debt Collector that surprised me the most was Gino, the mobster who befriends Abby. He’s tough, fearless, smarter than he gives himself credit for, can be empathetic yet follows orders much like a soldier doing what he is ordered to do regardless of his own feelings about what he is doing. Gino is someone who I think could have been successful (and happier) in any number of careers outside of crime, yet probably fell into the life early on and feels trapped in it. He is not college-educated, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he secretly read deeply about issues or topics that he found interesting. He is better than his circumstances and I believe somewhat troubled by his job, but doesn’t feel deep down that he deserves better. I get the feeling that he is neat and tidy, likes literature and art and philosophy and cooking yet can’t really share those interests with others in his circle. He likes and admires Abagail, yet wouldn’t hesitate to take her out if he were ordered to by his boss. I didn’t plan on Gino emerging as a major character until I wrote that scene of he and Albert meeting Abby for the first time in the motel parking lot. I really liked the interaction between the two characters. After that, he just sort or wormed his way into my brain and he kept coming up in the story. He’s the type of character I love; definitely a “bad” guy, but there are also things about him that make him both honorable and endearing in an odd sort of way.

There’s a game we play around here, called “Online Bookstore Algorithm”. What are 3-5 books whose readers may like The Debt Collector?
I’m not very good at picking books for Online Bookstore Algorithm – so I’d rather pick authors. I think if you enjoy the writing styles and books of authors like Elmore Leonard, John Sandford, S.A. Cosby, Lou Berney, and Jordan Harper, then you may like my writing.
I’d co-sign Leonard, Cosby, and Harper. I’ll have to check out the others.

In our last interview, you said you had two other novels underway at that point. Are those finished, or have you moved on to something else? Do you know when we should expect something—and what’s it going to look like?
I am actually working on several new novels (one is a sequel to The Debt Collector) and I’ve written a few short stories. At some point I’d like to put together a collection of my short fiction, but the truth is I don’t have a solid timeline on any of those projects.

But she was also a little off. You could see it in her eyes. She was crazy. Had an edge to her, hard and sharp. There was an alpha dog, a predator, hiding behind that sweet, pretty smile.

What’s The Debt Collector About?

What do a couple of neighborhood drug dealers, some gang members, a bookie, a finance-bro who refuses to pay said bookie, a slightly bent cop, a low-level mobster, and miscellaneous henchman have in common?

Abigail Barnes. A debt collector who just wants a job.

Now Abby isn’t the kind of debt collector who calls you at inconvenient times of day and harasses you about outstanding medical debt, or whatever. She collects for people who can’t go through services like that. People like the aforementioned bookie. Or other drug dealers. Loan sharks. And other people who could collectively be called “criminals.”

She doesn’t look like your typical tough guy, however. The man who introduces her (in one way or another) to the above, Hector, describes her thusly the first time he sees her (while sober, but that’s another story):

He opened the door and saw a very attractive young blond woman standing there. She was a white girl, with very white skin; piercing, electric blue eyes, and a sort of round face framed by shoulder-length hair that added to her youthful appearance. She was average height for a girl with a well-rounded, curvy body that looked more solid than it did plump. She had on a white blouse that matched her very white teeth and blue jeans with black cowboy boots. She was carrying a six-pack of beer in one hand. In the other was his Maverick 88 pump action shotgun, angled upward and pointed directly at him at just about crotch height.

But as Hector will learn shortly after this—and just about everyone else she comes into contact with does, too—appearances are deceiving when it comes to Abby.

She’s got some training. She’s smart, too—she knows her limitations, and what people expect from someone who looks like her—and she combines those three attributes in ways that pretty much mean that she always comes out on top. At least regularly enough that she can earn money and stay off the radar of the authorities. But sometimes, things do get hot enough that she has to relocate and start over.

This is what she’s trying to do when she encounters Hector for the first time (and he’s nowhere near sober)—in one of those scenes that you can’t help but see play out like a movie as you read. It’s a great opening to the book, and then once Hector starts introducing Abby, we’re off to the races.

I Don’t Think I Want a Steady Diet of This, but…

Near the halfway point, there’s a pretty good fight scene between Abby and some people who have come to collect her—some of the henchmen I mentioned earlier. And, well, it doesn’t go well for them. This is a common theme in this book. And frankly, given the kind of novel this is—it’s not altogether unexpected.

But Russo does something cool here—he rewinds things a bit after the fight, and then we get to see the fight from the other point of view. It still doesn’t go well for the henchmen—but the change of perspective helps you see everything that happened in a fuller way, and better appreciate Abby.

I wrote in my notes, “that’s pretty cool, but I wouldn’t want to see that all the time.” If every time Peter Ash, Charlie Fox, or Ben Koenig got into a fight with someone we saw it from two angles, it’d get tiring (and would slow down their novels). But as a sometimes-treat? I’d love to see this kind of thing more often.

Particularly if the author did it as well as Russo did.

So, what did I think about The Debt Collector?

I had a blast with this novel—it’s one of those that in a world where I didn’t have work the next day, a family that I should pay attention to, or a blog to maintain, I’d have tackled in a single reading. I distinctly remember sitting down to dip my toe in the water one night, and maybe read 10 percent or so of the book. I got to 28% without noticing—and had to force myself to put the book down.

It just moved so smoothly—the first scene gets you hooked, and by the end of the first chapter, you’re invested in Hector and Abby (more the latter than the former, but he has his charm). And it keeps getting better and better from there.

I used the word “smoothly” above—and that’s the only word that comes to mind as I try to describe this experience. It feels effortless the way that the novel keeps you turning page after page after page—a sure sign that it took plenty of effort. There’s a little humor, Abby’s got a fresh-feeling perspective that you want to see more of. And the action? Really, really well delivered by Russo. You may think you have a general idea of how things are going to go early on (and you are likely right), but the way he reveals the plot and takes you through the fight scenes and the movement of the plot will have you not caring about your own theories when you can just keep turning the pages.

I thought the second half of the last chapter, in particular, was a tasty little cherry on top of the sundae. We really didn’t need it—but I tell you, I’m glad we got it. (The Epilogue is another thing we didn’t need—and the novel would’ve been completely fine without it—but it made me smile).

This was just a pleasure—and makes me really hope we don’t have to wait another five years for Russo’s next novel.

But I completely forgot for 7 months that he’d given it to me, so I went and bought it to balance the scales a bit—the above is still my honest opinion, and I’d have gladly paid for the book even if I didn’t have a guilty conscience.

What’s In the Fullness of Time About?

First, let’s look at what was on the Publisher’s Website:

After reading the book, however, I’d offer a tweak or two to that description. For example, I’d add to that “for pastors, students, and lay leaders” lay people in general (or just swap out “leaders” for “people”).

Also, I’m not sure I’d include eschatology alongside those other topics. It seemed to me (on first read, anyway) that this was a book about Eschatology as presented by/understood through the New Testament—with a focus on understanding Pentecost and the fulfillment of redemption (and a couple of other topics) in light of that eschatology. That may seem like splitting hairs, and really, I’m guessing the good people at Crossway understand the book a bit better than I do. Still, I didn’t get the impression that the book thought of those ideas as equal (unlike the description).

The chapters in this book came from lecture notes for the class that Gaffin taught for years on Paul and Acts—a class I’ve heard several people mention over the years, and really wish I could’ve taken. Getting that material in written form is a blessing I didn’t expect and was more than happy to receive.

The Centrality of Eschatology

In Chapter 2, Gaffin writes:

for much Christian theology and preaching seeking to be faithful to the Bible as God’s inscripturated word, the rediscovery of eschatology can be seen as having a corrective significance that has resulted in laying hold of biblical teaching in a way that has not been fully appreciated in the past.

For instance, in a standard volume on systematic theology, “Eschatology” is the last chapter. More significantly, coming at the end of the volume, eschatology tends to be defined exclusively in terms of the “last things” having to do with what is still future for the church—Christ’s return and matters concomitant with his return, perhaps including as well some treatment of what occurs at death and the so-called intermediate state. Even more significantly, very often little, if any, attention is given to the relationship with what has preceded, to the integral connection between the future hope of the church and its present life and the practical relevance of the former for the latter.

What has become more and more clear is that in an overall presentation of biblical teaching, eschatology is not properly compartmentalized at the end. In particular, the New Testament teaches, as our own work will show, what is often termed a “realized eschatology.” Biblical eschatology is to be defined in terms of the first as well as the second coming of Christ. New Testament eschatology has a dual focus. In that respect it is elliptical, defined by two foci, present and future, the proverbial already-not-yet.

It’s this dual focus that characterizes so much of this book, and grounds the arguments Gaffin puts forth.

The Exegetical Portions

Throughout the book, Gaffin offers a lengthier exegesis of a particular passage as either a foundation for a chapter’s position or to show how something from earlier in a chapter is worked out through Paul or Luke’s work. These are the best parts of this book.

Period. It’s not even close.

For example, he uses a little more than two pages to exegete Philippians 2:12-13 while considering the indicative and imperative in Paul. I don’t remember a better example of writing leading to doxology recently.

I get—between this being based on the course, where he only had so much time and the design of the book—that he couldn’t have given us similar treatment for several more passages that he touched upon. But man, I wish he had. But that brushes up on the next section, so I guess it’s time to transition.

Could Use A Little More

In addition to wanting more exegetical portions, there’s something else I could use more of.

I think that despite the length of the book, it should’ve been longer—too much needs to be fleshed out a little more. Not much, but almost every point could be expressed more fully. More than once, Gaffin does a better job of clarifying what he’s not addressing or not saying than he does in making it clear what he is trying to say.

So, what did I think about In the Fullness of Time?

I read a chapter (or just a half of one) a week for a few months to carefully work through the book—and I’m sure I need to do the same (or slower) once or twice more to really get a handle on Gaffin’s arguments. But what I got this time around was about as good as anyone could ask for.

Reading this felt like I was sitting in a lecture hall featuring my favorite professor—in a strange way. I felt like I was a beginning student—almost like looking at some of these passages for the first time. Yet, while reading I simultaneously felt like I was understanding texts with a depth I’m not accustomed to. Reading Gaffin you’re frequently running into thinking more subtle and profound than a lot of what you’ve encountered previously—and that’s certainly the case here. Still, I thought this work was a bit easier to work through than some of his shorter works.

For me, this is the kind of work that you want to read alongside one or more others, so you can pause and talk things through from time to time—just to make sure everyone is understanding everything. Or at least you’re stupified with company.

Anyway, I don’t think I have anything else to say at this point—maybe on the eventual reread, I’ll be able to say something more substantive than this. Basically, you want to read this, wrestle with it, study it, and do it again.
