I’m reading Be the Serpent by Seanan McGuire—after all the joy of the last book, I anticipate that McGuire is going to hit us hard with this one. I’m also listening to Mistletoe and Crime by Chris McDonald, Stephen Armstrong (Narrator) on audiobook.

What did you recently finish reading?

I stayed up too late last night finishing Patricia Brigg’s Soul Taken and (hours earlier) finished Greywalker by Kat Richardson, Mia Barron (Narrator) on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be Fatal Forgery by Susan Grossey, a little dip into 19th financial crime. My next audiobook should be the third in The Dispatcher series of novellas, Travel by Bullet by John Scalzi, Zachary Quinto (Narrator).

What are your WWWs?

Plans and ambitions have run smack dab into Book Tour obligations and library due dates, so that cockiness I displayed a couple of weeks ago when talking about finishing the 20 Books of Summer Challenge early has come back to bite me (as I should’ve known). I should still finish on time, but it could be a close call. Thankfully, those obligations and due dates came with really good books, so I’ll take the trade-off. Anyway…on with the WWW Wednesday!

I’m reading the fantastic The Art of Prophecy by Wesley Chu and will be starting The Alchemist and an Amaretto by Annette Marie, Cris Dukehart (Narrator) on audiobook about an hour after this posts.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished Faith Hunter’s Final Heir (and, therefore, the Jane Yellowrock series) and the compelling Roxanne by Peter Grainger, Gildart Jackson (Narrator) on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be The Ghost Machine by James Lovegrove, I could use something light and breezy after the last two epic reads. My next audiobook should be Her Last Breath by Linda Castillo, Kathleen McInerney (Narrator) so I can see what’s next in Painters Mill.

I’m reading the last book in the Jane Yellowrock series, Final Heir by Faith Hunter. My current audiobook is Grave Reservations by Cherie Priest, Ulka Simone Mohanty.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished Chris McDonald’s Roses for the Dead, a great conclusion to the trilogy; and the quick hit of goodness that was The Heron by Don Winslow, Ed Harris (Narrator), on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be The Art of Prophecy by Wesley Chu, which just looks great, and my next audiobook should be Out of Spite, Out of Mind by Scott Meyer, Luke Daniels (Narrator), which is hopefully an improvement over the previous one in the series.

Today, I’m wrapping up the third Charley Mann thriller, Persecution by RC Bridgestock, and I should be finishing Plugged by Eoin Colfer, John Keating (Narrator) on audiobook.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished J. C. Jackson’s Divine and Conquer—a pivotal installment for this series—and Summerland by Michael Chabon on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be One Decisive Victory by Jeffery H. Haskell, which promises to be chock-full of action. To gear up for the next Toby Daye in a couple of weeks, I’m going to revisit When Sorrows Come by Seanan McGuire, Mary Robinette Kowal (Narrator) via audiobook.

What about you?

August 3 already? I’m not prepared for that. I could handle it being mid-July, but early August is…uncalled for, really.

Like I said Monday, I’m working on a couple of ARCs to start the week and then I’m tackling the home stretch for 20 Books of Summer. Then I’m shifting into the most ambitious project I’ve tried for the blog yet. I’ll get into details as it starts to come together, but now that I’ve said something, I’m going to have to get moving. (at least that’s the plan).

I’m reading The Marauders, The Daughter, and The Dragon by K.R.R. Lockhaven, which he described as the first in a “humorous hopepunk nautical fantasy trilogy” when we did a Q&A last year, which seems like a pretty apt description. I just started listening to Summerland by Michael Chabon on audiobook. I remember almost nothing

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished Nick Kolakowski’s Hell of a Mess—a welcome return to that series. I also just finished True Dead by Faith Hunter, Khristine Hvam (Narrator) on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be Composite Creatures by Caroline Hardaker to see why Paul recommended it to me. My next audiobook should be Plugged by Eoin Colfer, John Keating (Narrator).

How are you starting August?

I’ve said it a couple of times already this week, but I didn’t plan at all for SPAAW, and didn’t think I’d be able to participate this year. But I noticed that I did have a couple of Self-Published books on my August list, so I moved a couple of things around and this past week hasn’t looked like what I expected. And I think I’ll still be able to meet all the library due dates/personal deadlines that only I care about. Phew.

I’m reading/relishing the ARC of Bark to the Future by Spencer Quinn and am listening to On Eden Street by Peter Grainger, Gildart Jackson (Narrator) on audiobook, I’m enjoying the new vibe of the series, but missing the old one.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished Harry Bingham’s The Deepest Grave, the latest/last(?) book in the Fiona Griffiths series, I don’t like knowing there’s not another mystery with her in the waiting. My latest audiobook was The Jigsaw Man by Nadine Matheson, Davine Henry (Narrator) on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be Dead Against Her by Melinda Leigh, which will get me caught up on the Bree Taggart series (there’s a downside to that, I have to wait for the next one!). My next audiobook should be True Dead by Faith Hunter, Khristine Hvam (Narrator)—which is a holdover from last week, I realized I could squeeze in one more SPAAW book if I shuffled things up a bit.

You reading anything good lately? Or not-good, but that you want to talk about?

Like just about everyone in the Northern Hemisphere (or so it seems), I seem to be melting this week. When I’m not dreaming of November, I’ve been distracting myself with books—I’m actually two days ahead of where I expected to be. This happens so rarely, I’m on the verge of dancing a jig. I’m reading the second DI Erika Piper novel, Whispers in the Dark by Chris McDonald and am revistiting The Jigsaw Man by Nadine Matheson, Davine Henry (Narrator) on audiobook.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished Giano Cromley’s The Prince of Infinite Space, a coming of age story set when I was coming of age (which was a little odd) and the amusing memoir, The Diary of a Bookseller by Shaun Bythell, Robin Laing (Narrator) on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be Ghost of a Chance by Dan Willis (yeah, finally gettting to it!) With the Jane Yellowrock series finale just a few weeks away, my next audiobook should be True Dead by Faith Hunter, Khristine Hvam (Narrator).

How are you distracting yourself from the swelter?

Yesterday, we hit triple digits for the first time this year—and should exceed that at least twice this week. This just means it’s the perfect time to stay inside with a book—away from the impact of that ball of fire in the sky. On this WWW Wednesday, we’ll see what I’ve been using to help me stay inside.

Today, I started reading Condemned by R.C. Bridgestock and listening to Breaking Point by C.J. Box, David Chandler (Narrator) on audiobook. Good to be back in both of these series.

What did you recently finish reading?

Yesterday, I finished Derek DelGaudio’s AMORALMAN: A True Story and Other Lies and How the Penguins Saved Veronica by Hazel Prior, read by: Helen Lloyd, Andrew Fallaize, and Mandy Williams on audio. I enjoyed them both, but beyond that…I’m not sure yet. They both feel like the kind of thing I need to write about to figure out what I think.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be With Grimm Resolve by Jeffery H. Haskell, I’m eager to see what Haskell’s next move is. My next audiobook should be The Diary of a Bookseller by Shaun Bythell, Robin Laing (Narrator), memoirs of a used bookstore owner? How can that be anything but enjoyable? (I know, that’s a question I shouldn’t ask)

What are you using to avoid that heat?

It’s time for WWW Wednesday already? I think I said something like this a couple of weeks ago, but the third 3-day weekend in 6 weeks is really messing with me. I’m glad we get a couple of months without one. I don’t remember being this discombobulated by an extra day off as I have with the last two. Okay then, let’s get this taken care of, try to get me on some more solid footing.

I’m reading The Botanist by M.W. Craven (and am having a really hard time putting it down) and I just started listening to My Mess Is a Bit of a Life: Adventures in Anxiety by Georgia Pritchett, Katherine Parkinson (Narrator) on audiobook. Yeah, last week, I said it was going to be my next one—but between the holiday and the way that Harry Dresden trumps anything else for me…

I just finished A World Without “Whom”: The Essential Guide to Language in the BuzzFeed Age by Emmy J. Favilla—which was amusing, educational, and (for some) provocative. Yesterday, I listened to the new Dresden Files novella The Law by Jim Butcher on audio.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My next book should be the collection Short Tails by Spencer Quinn and my next audiobook should be Long Lost by Linda Castillo, Kathleen McInerney (Narrator), another novella. I seem to be hitting some quick reads at the moment (maybe my brain is making up for the week it took me to get through Don Winslow)

Tell me what you’re reading!

Here we are, knocking at the end of June, preparing for that wonderful time of the year where it seems like half of the people in my subdivision are trying to terrify my dogs into moving to Canada. Why don’t we commemorate it with a WWW Wednesday? My current book is taking a lot out of me–and it’s cutting into my audiobook time, so I’m not making a lot of progress with those, either. I’m not complaining (much), because it’s such a good book–but man, it’s taking a lot out of me.
