What’s The Prince of Infinite Space About?

Kirby Russo, a “troubled youth” from Montana has been at the Haverford Military Institute in North Dakota just long enough to start to change his behavior and think about things in a different light—but not so long that he’s totally bought into the system. He’s still largely an outsider—and likes it that way.

He’s assuming that he’ll have a leadership position in the school newspaper—his one real passion—at the beginning of his Senior Year. When that doesn’t happen, he (unlike the reader, who can see it coming from the moment he starts talking about it) goes off the deep end. All the progress he’s made, all the evolution he’s been going through is out the window, and his demeanor, attitude, and focus shifts. He just doesn’t have anywhere to shift it to, so he spends the first few months of the year completely aimless.

The closest thing he has to a goal comes from a picture he saw in a Chicago newspaper. His long-lost love is shown (under an assumed name) in a homeless camp. He starts to fantasize about reuniting with her—but how can he get to Chicago?

Then his Original Biological Contributor shows up unannounced. He’s never met his father, and has heard little good about him over his life. But when his father introduces himself to Kirby and asks to take him to meet his dying grandmother outside of Chicago, Kirby seizes the opportunity.

He can escape the Institute, learn something about his father, and get close enough to Chicago that he can probably find a way to the city.

It ain’t much, but it’s a plan.

Time Period

It’s a little disconcerting reading something that’s probably considered Historical Fiction set during the protagonist’s Senior Year in high school when you share the same Senior Year. Outside the discussion of Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait and the U.S. response, there’s not a lot of references to people and events of 1990. I’m fine with that—we don’t need an Ernest Cline-level of name-dropping to establish the setting.

I’m not convinced that Cromley’s 1990 matches up with reality that well. If Kirby’s world was looking at the 2003 invasion of Iraq, I probably wouldn’t have blinked. But the attitudes that Kirby encounters—in particular on the streets of Chicago—seem to fit the early 2000s more than the early 1990s.

So, what did I think about The Prince of Infinite Space?

The writing really sang (after a heavy-handed first sentence)—I chuckled a lot, and the descriptions were fantastic and real. His depcition of Chicaco alone made this worth the read. Cromley hits all the emotions and the big moments just right. The novel moved along quickly (possibly too quickly), and you get taken along with the characters effortlessly. Kirby’s a wonderfully flawed character—he’s a self-absorbed, petulant, immature twit. But he’s at the time of life where he’s supposed to be one, so that’s a win.

But unlike many of those characters, you get drawn into his character. You like him just enough, get invested in him enough that you want to see him mature, you want to see the coming-of-age in action. You don’t just want to write him off and go read about someone else.

This feels like the bones of a good novel—there’s not enough meat on it. Or, to change the metaphor, it’s like a chili that you serve too quickly, without letting the flavors develop while simmering a decent amount of time. There’s a compliment here—I liked it, I just wanted it to be better, I wanted more of everything.

This is a sequel to The Last Good Halloween, which probably tells about the delinquency (perceived or real) that sent Kirby to the Haverford Military Institute. It’s utterly unnecessary to read before this, but I’d imagine those who had read it will be a bit more satisfied after seeing what happens to Kirby.

I can barely scratch the surface of this book—I spent months trying to write something about the previous book in the trilogy, The Cartel, before giving up because I tried to do my typical post with it. This time, I’m going to go pretty surface-level, just to get something written.

What’s The Border About?

Adán Barrera is dead. DEA Agent Art Keller’s personal White Whale is gone, and two things are up in the air: what is Keller going to do with his life/career now? and What will happen to the Drug Trade in Mexico? Barrera may have been an evil man with a trail of bodies in his wake, corrupting government officials on every level, and is responsible for getting countless people on both sides of the border addicted to poisons. But he was a stabilizing influence on the various competing gangs, and without him, chaos ensues.

Meanwhile, a ranking Senator gets Keller appointed as the new head of the DEA. Once there, Keller attempts to change the way the War on Drugs has been fought. As one on the forefront of the “old way,” he knows how poorly it has succeeded. If he’s going to make any kind of impact, he’s going to have to change the way things are done.

But it turns out there’s something uglier and dirtier than the heinous crimes Barrera and his colleagues and rivals are steeped in—U.S. politics. Keller has to battle factions in the DEA and other law enforcement agencies to put his plans into action. He commits to a risky plan that could make a real difference in the war—if he can pull it off.

If he can’t, his career, his freedom, and maybe his life are at stake.

A Financial Education

A key part of Keller’s new strategy is to watch the money—there’s a lot going back and forth across the border, both to buy drugs and then to launder it. But then…it turns out, the cartels wanted more. They couldn’t just sit on the money, no matter how clean it was—there was just too much to leave hanging around. So they invested it, and they wanted something out of those investments.

If Keller can stop the money from going back South, that would be a significant move in the War on Drugs. They’re not going to provide the product if they’re not getting paid for it.

I didn’t go into this book expecting to get a lesson in finance or anything, but I don’t know if I’ve learned as much about that kind of thing since The Bonfire of the Vanities or Liar’s Poker. But the numbers Winslow uses make what those guys were up to seem small.

Supporting Characters that Steal the Show

One thing that Winslow does time and time again throughout this trilogy is to take a character and treat them as a case study for someone in this war on drugs. He’s used hitmen, minor drug dealers, aspiring gangsters, and others. What’s amazing is that he will consistently take someone like this and turn them into a character you really care about while using them to illustrate a reality, and at some point to advance the plot, too. The latter is probably the most impressive part—they’ll spend so much of the book seeming like a digression—a compelling, often moving digression, but a digression—and then he’ll shock you by making them integral to a plot point.

There were two that really stood out to me in this book—most prominently was a ten-year-old Guatemalan boy, forced by his mother to travel to New York (alone) to live with his Aunt and Uncle. The alternative was staying in Guatemala City and being forced to work for the gangs. His journey north is heartbreaking—and what happens to him (and how he reacts) once he crosses the border just guts me.

The other one that will stick with me for a while is a young woman addicted to heroin. Her story is tragic and frequently predictable. That predictability ends up making it even more tragic the further into her story you get.

If nothing else, characters like these two remind you that the Drug War really isn’t about the DEA, the Cartels, the gangs, or anyone else—it’s about the people who get caught up in the middle. The victims. The addicts. The people most of us never see or think about.

So, what did I think about The Border?

This is a daunting read—before you open it up, and it stays that way until the last 150 pages or so.

But it’s a powerful read. A gripping read. A haunting read.

I’ll frequently talk about how a novel feels real, like the kind of thing you’d read in the news. Usually, when I say that, it’s a compliment—like I can’t believe how well the author was at portraying something realistic. But with Winslow, I don’t know that it’s a compliment. He’s done his research—so much of this book is true. So many of these characters are amalgams of several actual people and their crimes. In many cases, I’d wager that he’s toned down the violence, the money, the debauchery, the corruption—just to make it credible. That old line from Mark Twain, “It’s no wonder that truth is stranger than fiction. Fiction has to make sense,” comes to mind.

It doesn’t bother me to think that characters like Hannibal Lecter or Ernst Blofeld are running around this world, because they’re so clearly fictional. But Keller’s targets—those south of the border, in the world of finance, and the halls of power in Washington, D.C.? Those are real. Those are frightening.

This is a disquieting book. It’s disturbing. It’s distressing. And it’s supposed to be. Winslow’s trilogy is a monumental achievement. It will entertain you as well as make you reconsider your position on the Drug War.

I can’t say enough about this accomplishment. This trilogy is one of the best things I’ve ever read.

What’s Love and Other Monsters in the Dark About?

I have no idea how to answer this question in any but the most annoying way—it’s a collection of forty-two short stories and flash/sudden fiction (however you want to refer to them). Learning that this is only 186 pages long emphasized just how short these stories are.

As far as this collection goes—the stories are about love and monsters, basically. The fact that the title says “Other Monsters” suggests a little about what kind of love stories will be told. Let’s just say that none of these will be fodder for a Hallmark movie.

The genres these stories approach the subjects from are varied—there’s some Science Fiction, some Horror, some Crime, and a little General Fiction—there’s even a Zombie story (a Zombie story I liked—despite my frequent claims that I don’t like the genre).

Self-Depreciation

Jensen does not have a lot of good things to say about writers in these pages, those comments both ring true and are some of the funnier lines in the book. In one story, a character cites a line in an earlier story and casts aspersions on it. It’s a small moment, and if you don’t recognize the call back you will miss absolutely nothing—but if you do catch it, you’ll enjoy it.

(yes, it’s possible that there are other self-referential moments that I missed. Which would only bolster that point about missing the one I caught not making that much of an impact)

There are not many lighter moments in this book—it’s about monsters, after all. So it makes those that Jensen provides all the nicer.

So, what did I think about Love and Other Monsters in the Dark?

It’s even harder to answer this question than the first one…the short version is, that I really liked it and was more than impressed with Jensen’s skill and versatility. I could list names of stories that wowed me, but that wouldn’t be useful to anyone (and my list would be really long—and incomplete). If I told you a little about the stories or why they were so effective, I’d ruin the experience for you. My hands are tied on being too helpful here.

If I did this as a profession, I’d take the time/effort to give you numbers here, but I’m not, so you’ll get impressions. A little more than half of the flash fiction aren’t complete stories—they’re the beginnings of stories, the introductory page or two for a short story, and then they end. Oddly, with one exception, that was enough for me—I was satisfied.

Well, I say I was satisfied, but I’d have loved to turn the page and get the rest of the story. Yet in a way that I cannot really understand (or, evidently, explain), what Jensen gave was enough. And that one exception had nothing to do with the brevity, it was the piece—I don’t think it would’ve resonated with me no matter how much content was provided.

Now, when she told a whole story in either the flash or short fiction? Some of the best short fiction I’ve read in a dog’s age. Sure, there were two or three stories that didn’t work for me, but that’s about my taste, not Jensen’s writing.

There are moments of sweetness (frequently deserving the prefix “bitter”, sure, but the sweetness is what I remember), there’s some heartbreak, too. There are just some horrible people and worse outcomes. I’m not sure there’s a “happily ever after” to be found, but maybe a few “better than it could’ve been” endings. Sure, there are also the horror stories or the SF that tends in a horror direction. Those might have been my favorites.

I’m going to stop flailing around, trying to describe my impressions of this book. In short—this is the kind of short fiction I want to read more of, and the kind I don’t find that often, which is why I read so little of it. Fast, well-written, impactful—these literary snacks will stay with you longer than you’d think they will based on the length.

“My name is Laura Costello, and I’m having a bad day.” She realized that made her sound like a member of a twelve-step group with an extremely low requirement for membership, but it’s what came out.

What’s Adult Assembly Required About?

This is not the most auspicious way to meet your protagonist—she’s in a new city, she knows nobody, and is about a month away from starting grad school, so is in kind of a limbo—waiting to start the next chapter in her life when her apartment burns up (with everything she owns) and she’s caught in a massive rainstorm before stumbling into Knight’s bookstore.

Thankfully, Knight’s is just the right place for someone to stumble into—not only will you find a great selection of books and people to help you find the right one, (at least in this case) they’ll take you in, get you a towel, a cup of tea, befriend you, and will help you find a place to live—the illegal boarding house that one of their staff lives at has an opening.

Maggie Morse is a widowed therapist, her children have moved out, so to fill up her house, she rents out as many rooms as she can—once Laura moves in, that total is five boarders, two dogs, and a cat. All are just a wee bit eccentric, which is just what Maggie wants—to fill her life with interesting people. The 80s sitcom just begs to be made, doesn’t it?

She and Laura hit it off, and Laura moves in. We quickly learn that today isn’t the only bad day that Laura’s had—she’d had a couple of years’ worth of them and has moved to L.A. for a fresh start as well as graduate school (she could’ve stayed in NYC for that, but her overbearing family and her ex-fiancé are there).

And from this point? Well, life—and possibly love—ensues.

No Islands, No Rocks

If The Bookish Life of Nina Hill was about finding and understanding family (while finding love), Adult Assembly Required is about friendship and its power to help you define yourself and your place in the world—alongside, or possibly in place of, family—(while possibly finding love).

It’s not just about Laura’s new friendships—there are so many layers of overlapping, intertwined, and free-standing friendships of various levels of closeness throughout this book it’d be nearly impossible to diagram. You could really excise (or ignore) the romantic plots within this and it’d still carry a heavy emotional impact.

Study after study, article after article, book after book talks about how disconnected Americans are today, that people are lonely and isolated—even those in close-knit families feel this way—that we need friends, friend-groups, and social connections outside the home. And to see all of these strong friendships and the impact they have on the people involved—topping it with how Laura’s life changes for the better and she becomes stronger because of and as she develops friends? It’s fantastic to see. You want to be friends with some/all of these people.

I’ve got nothing against a decent love story (over one book or a series), teams/partners working together are great, and there are plenty of great rugged individuals all over the literary landscape. But there’s something special about healthy and solid friendships.

The Nina Hill of It

“…I’m not a big Halloween person.”

“Not even Reese’s peanut butter pumpkins? They’re the best of the shapes,” said Nina. “It’s the perfect ratio of chocolate to peanut butter.”

Laura looked at Nina with interest. “You really do spend a lot of time thinking about things, don’t you?”

“‘Fraid so,” said Nina cheerfully, nodding. “It’s what keeps me from gnawing my own fingernails off.”

I was a little apprehensive about the idea of revisiting Nina Hill—that book was just so good, and we left her in the perfect place—a good chance of a Happily Ever After, a fresh start with her family, and her vocation/life purpose was revitalized and re-energized. Why disturb or revisit that?

But in making her a supporting character—Waxman gets to give fans (and, I expect, herself) some more time with this delightful character, but doesn’t have to jeopardize anything from the ending of The Bookish Life, because the focus is on Laura along with Polly and Impossibly Handsome Bob. Nina is just one more of the eccentric characters that Laura encounters in L.A. and as she becomes a friend she helps Laura—but the agency, the interest for the reader is on Laura.

I wasn’t sure I wanted anything like it, but now I’m fully on board with the idea of a Nina Hill Extended Universe and hope Waxman will return to it frequently (but not necessarily exclusively).

Only Missing Taylor Doose

One of the most impressive things that Waxman did in this book (and to an extent in The Bookish Life was making this little area of L.A., Larchmont, feel like a small town—not just a small town, but an idyllic small town like Stars Hollow.

It’s still in LA—with the traffic, weather, intricate highway systems, and questionable public transit—but in at least this one area it’s a community. Neighbors help and support each other’s businesses, know who the quirky people are, go to street fairs, have a Booster Club that’s apparently effective, et cetera.

I’m sure there are real communities scattered about in larger cities like L.A., but this feels different—yet believable.

So, what did I think about Adult Assembly Required?

I’ve tipped my hand already, here, I’m sure. But I loved this. By the time I’d read four pages I’d laughed enough that my daughter was giving me a look from the other side of the room. That settled down a bit as I re-acclimated to Waxman, but the book stayed as engaging and witty from there.

Waxman’s narrative voice is the real star of this book—Polly’s a fantastic character, ditto for everyone else in Maggie’s house, I’d love more time with Polly’s grandmother, and the assorted cats and dogs* are fantastic—but I’d be more than willing to read a version of this book without any of them just to read this narrative voice. It’s chatty, it’s snarky, and it’s still a reliable third-person omniscient. One day, I may be able to define the je ne sais quoi to define what it is about this voice that makes it so special, but until then I’ll just enjoy it (and not really care if I can describe it).

* Ugh. The pets! I forgot to write anything about the pets! Especially Daisy the pug. I don’t have time, and this post is too long anyway. They’re all pretty great, even the cats. But Daisy is magic. Am thinking of starting a petition calling for Book 3 in the NHEU to be about her.

I’ve spent a lot of time talking about everything but Laura Costello. Primarily because I don’t know how I could do so without making you reading the book irrelevant, once I start, I don’t know that I would know where to stop. From the moment you see her in the bookstore and hear about her bad day, you want to see her have a good day. When you do see that, you want to see more of them—and you want to see her put herself in positions to have many more of them. And as she has them, you want her to have even more.

She took some hard and important steps to put herself in L.A.—but those aren’t enough. She has more work to do (I don’t think she realizes how much more), and she needs support to get it done. The remarkable thing is that she gets that support, she’s surrounded by it, when she realizes her need—these friendships enable her to get to the point that she can see her need. And (very importantly), it’s not one-sided, she’s able to give support and encouragement and prodding even as she receives it.

Impossibly Handsome Bob is probably also Impossibly Good. But who cares? He’s just fun to read about, especially as he reacts to Laura.

Adult Assembly Required is funny, it’s sweet, it’s heartwarming, and will make you feel good all over. I canceled a thing or two and shuffled around my plans so I could find more time to read this because I just didn’t want to stop once I started (and didn’t regret it!). I’m not promising you’ll have the same reaction, but I don’t see why you wouldn’t have one like it.

A Bit of Backstory

I read this back when it was first published—I stumbled upon it browsing my library’s New Release shelf and decided to give it a try. I have no idea why—it’s been over a decade, and I couldn’t tell you. It probably seemed like something in the Hornby/Tropper/Gayle-vein, which was/is good enough for me.

It led me to read the next few books that Rowell put out, too—I had to give up on her stuff once she wrote a book set in the universe that Fangirl wrote fan-fic about. It got too meta for me, and honestly, I couldn’t get into that part of Fangirl in the first place.

A few weeks ago, my library added the audiobook to its digital shelf, and so it came up again as I was browsing New Releases. Needing a break from my typical listens, I decided to revisit this. I think if I’d thought about the story a bit, I wouldn’t have. But who knows.

What’s Attachments About?

I’m not going to be able to give my synopsis, because I’m going to end up tying myself in knots (see below), so I’m just going to appropriate the Publisher’s:

Beth and Jennifer know their company monitors their office e-mail. But the women still spend all day sending each other messages, gossiping about their coworkers at the newspaper and baring their personal lives like an open book. Jennifer tells Beth everything she can’t seem to tell her husband about her anxieties over starting a family. And Beth tells Jennifer everything, period.
When Lincoln applied to be an Internet security officer, he hardly imagined he’d be sifting through other people’s inboxes like some sort of electronic Peeping Tom. Lincoln is supposed to turn people in for misusing company e-mail, but he can’t quite bring himself to crack down on Beth and Jennifer. He can’t help but be entertained—and captivated—by their stories.
But by the time Lincoln realizes he’s falling for Beth, it’s way too late for him to ever introduce himself. What would he say to her? “Hi, I’m the guy who reads your e-mail, and also, I love you.” After a series of close encounters and missed connections, Lincoln decides it’s time to muster the courage to follow his heart . . . even if he can’t see exactly where it’s leading him.
Written with whip-smart precision and charm, Attachments is a strikingly clever and deeply romantic debut about falling in love with the person who makes you feel like the best version of yourself. Even if it’s someone you’ve never met.

The Other Attachments

Obviously, Lincoln and Beth are the central characters of this novel and the relationship/lack thereof/whatever-you-want-to-call-it between them is the important bit. But the title is Attachments, and it’s the other attachments where this novel shines brightest (and least problematically…but that’s for later).

The e-mails between Beth and Jennifer are what hooks the reader—as much as they hook Lincoln. Their friendship, the support, the advice—that link is what’s going to get the reader invested in Beth.

Lincoln’s lack of attachments to others—other than his sister and mother, anyway—is what’s going to draw the reader in. You feel for him—you know he’s pretty much alone in this world—defined mostly by the broken attachment to his ex-. And that was, what, almost a decade ago? He can’t move on yet—and you see that in his relative lack of attachments. The closest thing he has to a real relationship (of any kind) is with his D&D group. It’s when Lincoln starts putting energy (spurred by reading these emails and realizing he needs something else in his life) into building/strengthening attachments/relationships with others that Lincoln is able to move on from his ex- and turn into someone that would attract Beth (or anyone else, and there are possibilities). Not just attract, but would be good for—he needs to remember how to be a good friend/romantic partner.

This aspect of the novel deserves more space, but someone else needs to do that.

So….How Did this Age?

When I mentioned to my wife that I was listening to this book (that she also enjoyed a decade ago), she asked, “How did that age? Does it work today?” And…I’m not sure.

I reflexively grant the benefit of the doubt to a book written in another period—yes in Classic book X, a character might use a term no one would use today, but that doesn’t mean the book/author is whatever -ist we’d call them now. The most counter-cultural novel of 50 years ago will seem regressive today. So, there’s a little bit of that going on.

Still, there’s no getting around the fact that Lincoln reading private correspondence and basing his infatuation off of that is creepy with a capital EEP. In 2022, there’s no way Rowell gets this published. It’s arguable that she shouldn’t have got it published in 2011.

I’m not saying Beth’s actions toward Lincoln before they meet are less creepy, but they’re negligible. Especially if you compare the two. (really not endorsing moral equivalence the way that it looks there…I don’t think).

But…ugh. This is where I reveal that I’m a horrible person, I guess. The way Rowell presents it, and the way the characters are frank about the wrongness of what he did, kind of wins me over. The last couple of chapters are so sweet that you want to see them get past this horrible hurdle. Rowell’s charm and wit carry you to this point and then you just want these two crazy kids to get past this and live a happy life together.

It’s horrible, it’s terrible, and it’s problematic in more ways than I can express in this post if I talked about nothing else. And that should not be minimized. Buuuut, it’s cute and charming and funny, and you kind of melt. (which probably does that minimizing that I just said shouldn’t be done…)

On the Other Hand…

So I wrote the above section, as honestly as I could, set it down, and did something else. And a voice started yelling in the back of my head. “But Lincoln was wrong!” He cyber-stalked Beth, invaded her privacy, violated his job duties, and probably should be prosecuted.

If I came at this fresh today. If I listened/read this without the baggage of remembering that I enjoyed this, enjoying what Rowell produces (unless it involves adolescent wizards), and generally trusting her—I wouldn’t finish it. I’d have definitively DNF’d this, given it a 1-Star, and written Rowell off forever, not even glancing at anything else she wrote.

How was the Narration?

None of the problems of the work should be laid at Rebecca Lowman’s feet—she knocked this out of the park. It can’t be easy portraying someone reading the emails of others and letting that bring out a personality, but she does it. Also, she makes you believe the emails are dialogue, not extended monologues. Really good job by Lowman (and the director/editor, too).

Lowman also did the Eleanor parts of the Eleanor & Park audiobook. I remember thinking she crushed that, too, a few years ago when I listened to it. Basically, I need to keep an eye out for audiobooks by her.

So, what did I think about Attachments?

I…I just don’t know. I gave this 4 1/2 stars when I first read it. And I can absolutely see why. But I also know that I’d give it 1 1/2 stars as I DNFed it today (Rowell’s wit would’ve forced me to give it that extra half, no matter what moral bankruptcy existed).

I did find it interesting that I remembered the plot so poorly—the last hour or so felt like I’d never read it before. I’d remembered a completely different plotline for the last third or so of the book (and have spent a week trying to figure out what novel/movie’s plot I’d unconsciously merged with this one). I got the broad overview right, but wow…the things I got wrong. But then again, it has been a decade-plus.

I can’t recommend this book, and probably shouldn’t have. But if you read it (and can get past the hero being a stalker), you’re going to enjoy it. If Rowell gets back to writing things that don’t involve teen magic users, I will gladly read it. I love her style, her humor, her references, and the way she damaged characters finding love—particularly the way they express that love. Her dialogue is some of the best around.

I just feel icky that I enjoyed this so much.

What’s Dirt Road Home About?

After a succession of horrible boyfriends (abusive, addicts, etc.) over the years, Rose Davis started seeing someone online. And things were going pretty well for them—so well, in fact, that Rose and her adolescent sons move from Detroit to a small Tennessee town to be with him.

Her sons, Logan and Dex, aren’t crazy about this move. Logan (who is the protagonist, by the way) is 6 weeks away from high school graduation and turning 18. Dex is a year behind him. They’re Detroit through-and-through, comfortable on the streets there, they live and breathe internal combustion engines, and cannot imagine living anywhere else, but they have no choice*.

* Okay, that part rang a little false for me. He’s close enough to 18, that Logan could’ve stayed behind. He could’ve crashed with some friends—or a series of friends—or something. Child Services isn’t going to swoop in and put someone his age into the system. But suspend disbelief for it and it’s fine.

On their first night in town, Logan and Dex get into a tussle with a couple of local high school football stars, and instead of simply being the new kids in school, they’re those guys. They’re trouble. The fight video is online, putting a giant target on their back.

Logan’s ability with cars helps him find a niche, a way to fit in. He and Dex take part in some street racing and find some friends—or at least people who aren’t instinctually antagonistic toward them.

More importantly, Logan meets Leah there. She’s a stunning, confident, and charming young woman in his class who will turn his life upside down. Maybe life in the South won’t be that bad after, all.

Greg McCarter

The MVP of this book has got to be Rose’s new boyfriend, the one they move to Tennessee to be with. With only one major character flaw (which, granted, is debatable and a minor spoiler, so that’s all you get), he’s about to perfect as you’re going to get. And sure, those characters are unrealistic, but every now and then, coming across one is fine.

He’s exactly the kind of guy that Rose needs to be with (even if, like Logan, the reader doesn’t understand her appeal to him). He’s absolutely the right kind of adult make for Logan and Dex to have in their lives. You can’t help but wonder how things would’ve turned out for all four of them had they moved to Tennessee a year or two earlier.

Still, he’s the kind of guy that would improve almost any novel—if Nader had put him as the central character of a book, he’d be just as appealing—maybe more so. I know my appreciation for this novel went up a notch or two when he was in a scene.

A Problem that Only I’m Going to Have

Back in April, Pay Dirt Road was published, and about that time Winding Road Stories reached out to me about Dirt Road Home. I cannot tell you how often I’ve conflated the two titles since then. They couldn’t be more different in any way, but those titles? I have been and am forever going to refer to them both as Pay Dirt Road Home.

So, what did I think about Dirt Road Home?

This is tagged as a coming-of-age story. And technically it is, sure. But I’d want to call it something else. It’s a coming-home story, which is tricky because Logan’s really never had one. But that’s what separates this from so many coming-of-age stories, it’s about more than Logan maturing—it’s about the atmosphere that gets him there.

My only complaint with this book is that everything happens too quickly. I’m not saying it’s too fast-paced, I’m just saying that if Logan had been 3 months away from graduation instead of 6 weeks, and that the events that happened between the fight their first night and the Event That Changes Everything right before the dénouement had taken more weeks, I’d have bought everything a little easier.

I bought it all in the moment, although there was a voice in the back of my head saying, “Slow down and think about things, kid.” The problem for me came when I put the book down and thought about it. I’m not saying what happens to—and within—Logan and the rest couldn’t happen like that, I just could have accepted and liked it more. Also, I wanted to see the relationships between Logan and those new to his life more—I really liked Greg and Leah’s parents, in particular, and more scenes with them would’ve improved this already good novel.

Tossing that aside—this is a fun story. It’s sweet, it’s hopeful, and it’s heartfelt. It’s a giant departure from the rest of Nader’s work (judging by the 120 seconds I spent researching him). It’s reminiscent of James Bailey‘s YA novels and Headphones and Heartaches. I need to read things like this from time to time—things that focus on growth, improvement, and contentment/happiness. That’s what this book’s premise promises and that’s what it delivered.

What’s Nothing to See Here About?

Over a decade ago Lillian and Madison were roommates at a boarding school for the upper crust (or scholarship kids like Lillian). They were incredibly close until Lillian was expelled. Even then, Madison wrote Lillian regularly and Lillian responded sometimes. They didn’t see each other, only corresponded.

Madison’s gone on to success in politics—first as a campaign staffer, now as the wife of a Senator, who is likely to be tapped for a Cabinet position. Lillian…well, she’s not done really well for herself. The controversy over her expulsion followed her through school—she didn’t get the scholarships she needed to get out of her situation. She’s still living with her mother—which is a pretty contentious relationship.

Now Madison writes with a job offer/plea for help. The Senator’s previous wife has recently died and he needs to take custody of their children. Madison would like Lillian to act as a governess (Lillian keeps saying “nanny,” much to Madison’s consternation) for them, at least until her husband’s nomination is confirmed by the Senate.

There’s a catch. The twins will sometimes burst into flames. Like Johnny Storm without the flying or the trip into space that goes horribly wrong.

They won’t suffer any injury from it, but the same can’t be said for their clothing or anything near them. Lillian needs to keep them out of the press, away from Madison’s son, and hopefully under control. They want to/need to take care of the twins, but really don’t want to have anything to do with them.

This will be the best-paying job Lillian ever has held. She knows nothing about working with kids—and the only models she’s ever had for it are horrible. But she’ll do whatever Madison asks (and she could use the money). Also, she knows what it’s like to be a kid who needs a break—maybe she can help these kids out.

A Pleasant Twist

So you have a couple of kids who burst into flames from time to time. 97% of authors are going to devote the novels to the rest of the characters spending the bulk of the book trying to figure out how or why that happens, and what they can do to stop it/duplicate it/fight crime with it.

Wilson’s in that other 3%, thankfully. Yes, there are some efforts to learn why it happens, but that’s never the focus—and most of the time, those who are investigating aren’t characters who were supposed to be that sympathetic.

The focus remains on the kids as kids—how does Lillian help them feel safe? Wanted? Normal? She does work with them on not bursting into flame—but it’s not so much about the ability/affliction, but about helping them to be comfortable in their own skins—whatever temperature it is. It’s about self-acceptance (which leads to control).

How Was the Narration?

Normally, it takes me a chapter or two to “get into” a new-to-me narrator, or at least to decide what I think of the narration overall. But Ireland won me over within the first couple of minutes—as a certain janitor says, “I don’t know what IT is, but [s]he’s got it.”

She’s a narrator I’ll keep my eyes out for. I don’t know that I’ve seen her in anything, but I saw today that she’s going to be in the Justified revival—I’m looking forward to that.

So, what did I think about Nothing to See Here?

One of the reasons that I put off reading/listening to this book for so long, was that I remember The Family Fang falling apart in the end—or at least not ending as good as the first 80% or so of the book was*. I was more than a little apprehensive that the same thing would apply here. Thankfully, I was wrong.

* My memory of it is hazy, that’s just the sense I have—I could be wrong.

This book started strong and kept getting better—it didn’t end like I thought it would but ended the only way it could’ve (in retrospect). The only way it could’ve been better is for the middle bit to be longer and more detailed. These are fantastic characters, and the concept is just as fantastic. These kids belong in a speculative work of some kind—SF or Fantasy (Urban or otherwise). But no, Wilson puts them in the middle of a family drama. And it’s great to see. Funny, warm, and heartfelt—Nothing to See Here scored on all fronts for me.

What’s The Cartographers About?

This is hard—I tried to describe this to some friends earlier, and I tripped over myself so many times while trying to make this sound enticing while not giving anything away. I’d call that conversation a rough draft of this section, but it was so bad that Anne Lamott’s going to have to revise the section in Bird by Bird about sh***y first drafts.

Nell Young has had a life-long obsession with maps—her parents have doctorates in cartography and it might as well have been encoded in her DNA. She and her boyfriend had internships in the New York Public Library where her father works, too. Then one day, she finds a couple of maps in a forgotten corner of the Library, one of which is an old gas station map. Her father flips out over what she found, for reasons she can’t really understand—a major argument ensues and she’s fired. So is Felix, her boyfriend. Not just that, but her father goes on to wage a war on their reputations—they’re finished in academia.

Felix leaves the field and Nell goes to work for an Internet company making faux historical maps. Years pass without Nell speaking to her father, then he dies suddenly. While looking through his office, Nell finds that gas station map and is flabbergasted. Why would he keep that thing?

Nell starts asking questions and learning things about her family, and a whole lot more.

Visual Aids

As is fitting for a book about maps, the novel has some. Not many, most of the ones in the book are described, not seen. But there are just enough—the important ones—to ensure the reader can visualize what’s going on—we see what Nell and the rest see.

It’s a great touch—I love that Shepherd included those—I’m one of those fantasy readers who rarely glances at the maps in those books—but I spent time on these.

I Couldn’t Stop Thinking About…

Last week, I quipped that this book was “very Mr. Penumbra-esque.” This was too blithe and flippant. And yet…I couldn’t get it out of my mind.

Shepherd doesn’t write anything like Sloan, the worlds are completely different, and the way they approach character and narrative don’t really overlap. Really I think the only thing I can point to that is a demonstrable similarity is the way that they approach Big Tech companies—but this novel’s Haberson Global is more like the company in Sourdough, anyway, so I’m not sure it counts.

Again, I couldn’t stop thinking about Mr. Penumbra’s 24‑Hour Bookstore. It’s about some dedicated and brilliant people whose passion for and pursuit of something that everyone else in the world pretty much takes for granted. There’s a little more to it, but I’d have to spoil stuff about both books, so I’m not going to get into it.

So, what did I think about The Cartographers?

I never, not for one minute, thought that a book about maps and mapmakers would be this riveting. And I was wrong. Not that I’ve spent that much time thinking about books about mapmakers, but you get the idea.

I’ve read some pretty strong thrillers that weren’t as gripping as this. Shepherd paced this perfectly and kept building the tension in just the right manner. Even when I got to the point where I’d figured everything out—even the mind-bendy bits—and was just waiting for Nell and the rest to catch up, I was on the edge of my seat. That tension extends to things that happened before the novel’s present time—we’d get chapters of first-person narration from some of Nell’s father’s friends from when she was a toddler. I knew where certain characters would end up because you’d met them already—but that didn’t make the uncertainty about what was going to happen to them in the memory much easier to take.

But this isn’t just a thriller—it’s a story about a family. One of the sweetest, strangest, and saddest found families you’re going to run into. A mantra that runs throughout this book the way Uncle Ben’s “With great power…” runs through certain movies* is that the purpose of a map is to connect people. The way that these people are connected would be difficult to map out—the routes certainly are intricate and varied—but the connections are strong and lasting.

* Yes, I know it’s from the comics first—but the comics rarely, if ever, beat that drum the way some of the movies do.

I was less than satisfied with the ending—because I thought it was headed somewhere else, and then it seemed to aim in a different direction, and it ended up in a third. I think the expectation problems are all mine, they’re not from the text. I’m also sure that the ending we get is stronger than what I expected. Still, it’s hard to for me accept what we got since I’d spent 100 or so pages sure we were getting something else.

None of that changes the bottom line of this post—you’re going to want to read this book. I strongly recommend it. There are few books like it in the world, and that’s a shame. But it means that there’s every reason to read this.

All the dying that summer began with the death of a child, a boy with golden hair and thick glasses, killed on the railroad tracks outside New Bremen, Minnesota, sliced into pieces by a thousand tons of steel speeding across the prairie toward South Dakota. His name was Bobby Cole. He was a sweet-looking kid and by that I mean he had eyes that seemed full of dreaming and he wore a half smile as if he was just about to understand something you’d spent an hour trying to explain. I should have known him better, been a better friend. He lived not far from my house and we were the same age. But he was two years behind me in school and might have been held back even more except for the kindness of certain teachers. He was a small kid, a simple child, no match at all for the diesel-fed drive of a Union Pacific locomotive.

What’s Ordinary Grace About?

It’s the summer of 1961, and thirteen-year-old Frank and his younger brother, Jake, are going to be irrevocably changed over the next few months. Their small Minnesotan town of New Bremen, will be rocked by five deaths and some near-deaths, as well.

Frank and James live there with their older sister, Ariel—eighteen and about to leave their parents’ home. Nathan and Ruth married before Nathan went to serve in WWII—when he came home, he became a Methodist minister instead of the lawyer he’d planned on being before the war changed him. Ruth hasn’t entirely forgiven him for that but does her best to take part in congregational life, and to make do with his small salary.

Ariel is their golden child, Julliard-bound. Jake stutters, and is clearly fearful of almost everything—and everyone—around him, drawing what little confidence he has from his proximity to Frank. Frank is the family rebel—by most standards, he’s only slightly mischievous, but compared to the rest of the Drum family, he’s the equivalent of Bart Simpson.

The first death (see the quotation of the novel’s first paragraph, above) is that of someone that Frank and Jake knew–even played with. The boys discover the second body, a stranger to them. Those two are enough to alter the course of their development to a degree—but the next three (and the accompanying events) are what will leave an indelible mark on the entire family.

God’s Awful Grace

Krueger likes to use the phrase “the awful grace of God,” and makes other references to it, he wants that idea in your head as you read about the horrible things and deaths the reader and the characters encounter. You’re supposed to think about the (apparent) contrast between “awful” and “grace”, as well as catch the references to Aeschylus and Robert F. Kennedy (and, by extension, Martin Luther King’s death).

As far as the Aeschylus/RFK allusions go—yes, think about those. I think there’s a lot to chew on there. Sure Kennedy has yet to cite that poem, but the narrator has heard it–he’s writing from the perspective of four decades later.

But the former suggestion? I’m sure that Krueger, and many/most of his readers, know the phrase isn’t to evoke something extremely bad or shocking/saddening, but the archaic definition of awe-inspiring or enormous. But the reflex for contemporary readers isn’t to go with the lesser-known/used understanding but to think of the surface and the tension between the ideas, and it bothers me that we’re supposed to spend time on that understanding, even if it’s only a little bit. I’m not sure why it does, but it does.

But while I’m here on the subject of God’s grace, can I just say that the one sermon that we get all of from Nathan Drum, during the darkest part of this book, is one of the best I’ve read in a long time. Drum doesn’t understand grace the same way that RFK or Aeschylus does—grace to him is the unmerited sort, the kind that will come to someone in loss, in misery, in despair, and will cause them to believe, hope, and love. The book was worth the effort for this sermon alone, the rest is just gravy.

Krueger’s Prose

On the one hand, the prose is gorgeous—Krueger’s one of those authors that feels like he’s writing, perpetrating hooptedoodle. He breaks most of Leonard’s rules for writing all over the place, notably, “If it sounds like writing, I rewrite it.” But, as Leonard notes himself, there are authors who can skip them–Krueger’s one of those authors.

Still, there are a couple of things that got under my skin and would frequently take me out of the moment. For one, Krueger is sparing in his use of commas—a couple of times, I’d read a sentence out loud the way it’s in the book, and then with the missing commas; and I think I could get close to understanding why he made the choice. I didn’t agree, but I could maybe see what he’s going for.

But the thing that really bothered me was the dialogue. It really reads like someone wrote it, everyone (or almost everyone) is almost constantly sounding like they’re making a profound point about whatever. Particularly when it comes to Frank and his brother—I don’t need prepubescent boys uttering sentences with layers of meaning and dripping with wisdom nearly every time they say something.

That doesn’t mean that some of those sentences aren’t great and readable and even quotable. It just means it bothered me.

So, what did I think about Ordinary Grace?

“… He’s a vet. Korea. Had a tough time over there. It’s eating at him, I believe. He drinks. He’s hard on his family…”

“Sometimes, Nathan, I think it wasn’t as what we took into the war. Whatever cracks were already there the war forced apart, and what we might otherwise have kept inside came spilling out.”

Once I’d gotten on board with the hooptedoodle, I was able to appreciate what Krueger was about. This really brought Tiffany McDaniel’s The Summer That Melted Everything to mind (and Betty to a lesser extent). I also was reminded of Songs In Ordinary Time by Mary McGarry Morris, A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving, and early Richard Russo, as I read this. None of which would ever be considered for the Edgar, Anthony, Macavity, or Barry Awards like Ordinary Grace won. I know those awards mean I should think of this as a Mystery or Crime novel, but I just don’t. It fits with the others better, I think (but I do see why it won those).

It’s a book that will get its hooks into you, if you let it, just not the way that most Mystery novels do. It will make you think, it will make you feel, and it may cause you to think deeper (or more shallow, I suppose) thoughts about God and His grace. But mostly, it’ll make you think about humanity and many of the ways we can harm each other, intentionally or not.

I won’t say that I enjoyed 98% of this book—but the entire time I spent reading it I was fully aware that I was reading something of quality–something that deserved my attention, and I was glad to give it. I also had no trouble seeing why my friend recommended it to me–and I owe her a solid recommendation in return.
